PLEASE READ: When responding please share information about yourself such as home, yard, fence, work hours, other pets, Chihuahua experience). We will need an application that can be found at sparrowdogs.com. We will not be accepting or responding to phone calls or texts, only email please. Oh, Marty, what a story you have! He became quite the internet celebrity when we posted him to our Eye on the Sparrow FB page...wow...we were overwhelmed!! Typically we do a little blip about new dogs coming into our rescue just to introduce them. Marty just blew up, he had 6800 views...omg...all of that love and compassion for a little bitty guy in need, so awesome! Marty is an 11 year old Chihuahua, only about 7 pounds. His family gave him up to a shelter after he bit a grandchild. Ya, we know, Chihuahua's are not typically fond of kids. And perhaps the family could have monitored the situation better. Judging from the comments on his FB post, that is the consensus. I agree. I have been blessed with a number of Chi's in my life, loved everyone of those ornery little buggers. I had one little girl, Tia, that would show her teeth at any guest we had in our home. My sister would say, "Oh look, Tia is smiling at me!" LOL...she understood the breed as well. Not to say that they are all that way, but let's face it, they bond to their people and for the most part really do not encourage anyone else in their little clique. Marty is that guy. He had to be placed on a rabies hold at a local animal control. Let's just say he did not make a great guest, he was a bit surly, the little rascal. He was surely not going to make it to the adoption floor with that attitude, lol. So, when we were contacted about taking him in, we said sure. He is the kinda guy that we typically deal with. The shelter can be a scary place, and add on that you just lost your home and family, it is pretty traumatic. We let Marty gradually settle in, the picture of the dogs surrounding his crate was when he first arrived. They were very curious what this little gremlin was. We gave him space, didn't rush to pet him or pick him up. It is important to let them feel comfortable before engaging with a fearful dog. They will come to you when they have thoroughly watched and checked you out. And he did. HE would finally put his little paws on my leg for a pet, and follow us all around the yard. He has become a little buddy. But-he is still not fond of the other dogs. One dog yipped today, and there was Marty with a mouthful of poodle fuzz, the little devil. So--we are looking for a very Chihuahua savvy home, obviously NO small children. He will probably be best as an only dog, but with some guidance perhaps he could learn to live with another small dog. He is fine with some dogs. As far as meeting Marty, he is not one to be won over right away. He will probably need to go home in a crate and settle into your home gradually as he did here. He is so worth it, he is such a sweet boy given the chance to get to know him. He loves his crate and exploring the yard, loves to have his back scratched and seems to be housebroken. He will let you know when he is hungry-lol! Marty was recently neutered, fully vaccinated and even had a dental(he lost 3 teeth.) His adoption fee is $150--he is waiting for his very special person/family!! Please email Kristine at joysparrows@gmail.com

When responding PLEASE use application at sparrowdogs.com, or you can also provide your information via email, such as:home, family, yard/fence, other pets, ages of people in the home, work hours...Thanks! Meet sweet Vivian...or as her friends call her, Vivi!! The name suits her, Vivi has tons of VVVVVVVVRROOOOM!! She is just 9 months old and we think she is part Chihuahua and part Jack Russel Terrier. As a home that has loved JRT's and adore their personalities, Vivi fits the bill. She has the look as well, a nice little JRT face with perhaps more of the Chi size. She is just a petite 10 pounds. Vivi was at a very large and busy shelter, where she was very well taken care of, but she was a bit overwhelmed with all the hustle and bustle. She was not settling in well and certainly not letting her little sunshine of a personality light up. Happens so often, it is just a tough environment and really hard to get a good read on who this little dog really is. So, she came out to us and joined our crew, and boy, did she shine! The first moments she was very cautious, but she checked us out and we passed the sniff test, lol. Vivi is great with the other dogs but has made Joey, another foster dog( a young maltipoo) her best pal. The two of them LOVE to zoom around the yard and play tag. Although Vivi can be a very active dog, she is also a world class snuggler. If there is a lap to be had, she will claim it as her own. Vivi has been doing great with her housebreaking, we do take very frequent breaks outside and her new family will need to continue to reinforce her training. Vivi will do best in an active home, a fenced yard with another active dog would be great. She is shy meeting new people, so she could use some patience and understanding that she is not going to warm up right away, she can be a little cautious. We think she will be fine with older kids, no little ones at this time. She is a wonderful little dog and will be lucky person/family's best pal!! Her adoption fee is $400. Please email Kristine with your info/application at joysparrows@gmail.com.

Story
Maeve is an 11 year old Chihuahua who was dumped on the streets of Peoria, Illinois in critical condition. She was covered in fleas, painfully underweight, her nails overgrown and her trust in people just about gone. All signs point to her being a former backyard breeder dog, discarded when she was no longer useful. But here is the thing about Maeve.....She did not give up. Fast forward to today and Maeve is still 11....just wiser, softer and quietly hopeful. She is sweet, loving and trying so hard to believe that the rest of her life can be better than everything before. She would thrive as the only dog in the home. She is not a fan of other dogs but she does well with cats. Because of her past small children are not in her picture. She is house trained, but cannot manage stairs. This little girl does not need much - just calm, understanding home and a human who sees her worth and gets her!

Story
Bernard Thomas aka Bernie is a dynamic little man that weighs in at under 7 lbs full grown! He is about 3 years old and he is housebroken and doesn’t really need to be crated. Bernie is fabulous with cats, likes small dogs and some bigger dogs (mostly calm, chill ones), and would prefer a home with no young kids. He is a typical chihuahua and if you know chihuahuas you know what we are saying. He loves car rides, belly rides, and lap seating with his people. It doesn’t take Bernie long to warm up and he does well at the vet. He fits in his foster home with a larger pack of dogs and cats and two humans experienced with chihuahuas. His fosters want him to go to a home that know chihuahuas and understand their needs. This little guy was dumped on the streets and deserves to live his life in comfort! Bernie is adoptable now! Story
Meet Berdie! 🐾 Berdie is an almost 2-year-old sweetheart who's looking for a family to call her own. She has the perfect balance of playful and affectionate, making her a wonderful companion for someone looking for a loyal best friend. About Berdie: 🐶 Almost 2 years old ✅ Crate trained 🏡 House training is a work in progress 🚶 Moderate activity level ❤️ Loves to cuddle and be close to her people 🐕 Dog friendly 🐈 Can live with cats, but she'll need a dog-savvy cat. Berdie may chase cats when they run, so slow introductions and proper management are important. 👧 Good with children, though she does best with calm, gradual introductions to new people. Berdie may be a little reserved when meeting someone new, but once she feels comfortable, her sweet, affectionate personality shines through. Whether you're relaxing on the couch or heading out for a walk, Berdie is happiest when she's by your side. If you're looking for a loving companion who's equal parts cuddle buddy and adventure partner, Berdie may be the perfect addition to your family!

Story
Meet Scout, an adorable 4-year-old, 20lb Terrier/Chi/Cattle Dog type mix. He is a sweet boy who loves to be with people and receive attention. He knows sit and paw and will happily offer those commands whenever you would like, sometimes even when you are not asking for them. Scout has lots of energy and is working on leash manners. Because of his dog reactivity, he will need some work on walks. A fenced yard would be great for him. He does love to run around and sniff in the grass. He can tend to grab the leash to try to tug or be a little mouthy when he gets excited. He is looking for a home with no children or other pets.
