Story
Who doesn't love a little Sugar in their life? Meet Sugar! Sugar is a 3 year old chihuahua mix who is looking for an adopter who is going to offer her lots of time, space and attention while she is becoming adjusted to her new home and family. Sugar came into Dakin with another female dog who shares the same energy level as her, due to this, Sugar would likely do well living with a canine friend again as long as there is lots of space given to both pups while everyone is getting settled. Sugar has been a bit stressed here in the shelter and we have seen that her stress response is sitting on a person's lap and getting as many pets as you are willing to pass on to her. With how nervous Sugar can be, we are recommending she goes to a home with kids 12 years or older or an adult only home just to make sure everybody is as set up for success as possible. Sugar would benefit greatly from some extra potty and leash training with her new person. Sugar would love to meet you and get her new adventure going! Ready to Adopt? You have two options: #1- VISIT IN PERSON Come during our open adoption hours: Tuesday - Saturday,12:30 - 3:00pm. You’ll be able to meet available dogs in the shelter. (Dogs in foster care are not available for in-person visits.) #2- ADOPT REMOTELY OR PLACE A 24-HOUR HOLD** If you’re ready to adopt without meeting the dog first, or you’d like to place a non-refundable $25 hold to reserve a dog for 24 hours, just call or email us: (413) 781-4000 x 1 springfield@dakinhumane.org. We are often helping other clients when you call, but we return voicemails and emails within 24 hours. **Holds are not available for puppies under six months, on Saturdays, or during adoption events. -------------------------------------------- All adult dog adoption fees include; -spay/neuter -rabies and kennel cough vaccinations - heartworm test -current parvo/distemper vaccines (may need additional boosters with your veterinarian) -microchip implanted & registered to adopter -treatment of fleas & ticks -veterinary exam and health certificate at Dakin -free vet exam within 30 days of adoption with participating veterinarians Most pets have also received other medical care while with us. Your veterinarian may recommend additional health care for your pet.

Story
OTHER PETS: Rico was neutral around other dogs, and didn't have a lot of interest in saying hello. He could get along well with another mellow dog in the home, but as always he must meet any dogs he'll be living with prior to adoption. [Likely (Must Meet First)]OWNER EXPERIENCE: Rico would do best with someone that has an established relationship with a vet, and experience or willingness to learn about positive reinforcement. [Some Experience]KIDS: Rico is comfortable with handling and hasn't shown any signs of resource guarding while at TJO. He would likely be a good match as a family dog, but as always interactions between children and dogs should always be actively monitored to ensure that both parties remain comfortable and safe. [Likely (Must Meet First)]ACTIVITY LEVEL: Rico has not shown much interest in playing, but he does enjoy short walks around the block! While he's fairly independent, he will seek out his favorite people when he wants attention and is happy to spend time out in the sun. It's also possible that once his eye is removed and he receives a dental, his energy level will change. A combination of regular, moderate exercise and plenty of mental enrichment such as food puzzles and games will help meet his needs. [Couch Potato / Good Walking Buddy]VETERINARY CARE: Rico has recently had one of his eyes removed and undergone a dental. He would likely do best with someone that has an established relationship with a primary veterinarian. [Above Average]LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Positive reinforcement training will help Rico to not only learn his basic cues & skills, but also help him to bond with his new owner. [Minimal]GROOMING: Due to his fur texture and length, Rico will need to be brushed routinely in order to prevent him from becoming matted. He may also do well with professional grooming appointments to help keep him clean and comfortable. [Routine Brushing]April 2, 2026, 5:32 pm
