Story
Meet Westley: long dog, shy guy, backyard security specialist 🐾🌭 Westley is a 3-year-old Chiweenie weighing about 12 pounds, though genetically he seems to have said “more dachshund, please.” He’s got the long little body, the adorable waddly zoomies, and serious opinions about neighborhood activity. This sweet boy absolutely LOVES other dogs. In fact, having a playful dog buddy—or regular dog friends to romp around with—is basically a requirement for his happiness. Nothing brings Westley to life faster than backyard zoomies with canine pals. He’s social, playful, and happiest when another dog says, “Wanna run around for absolutely no reason?” Westley is very shy when meeting new people and can freeze up when he’s nervous, but he has never shown any meanness whatsoever. Once he realizes he’s safe, his curious and goofy personality starts peeking through. He actually did great at a local pet store despite being nervous about introductions, and he’s been good with calm kids and polite people he’s met along the way. He’s also cat-curious—more “what are you?” than “must chase immediately.” At home, Westley is quiet indoors… unless someone dares walk past his backyard. Then he transforms into a tiny neighborhood watch captain dedicated to alerting everyone about suspicious activity such as joggers, squirrels, and people existing on sidewalks. (The neighbors may not fully appreciate his commitment to public safety.) Westley is crate trained, loves walks, and is just beginning to discover the magical joy of toys. His new tennis ball? Life-changing. He’s still working on house training and leash manners, but he’s eager to explore the world and will thrive with patience, routine, and encouragement. If you’re looking for a gentle, funny little sidekick who loves dogs, backyard adventures, and becoming part of a pack, Westley is ready to wiggle his way into your heart 💙🐾 If you are interested in finding out more about Westley, please fill out an adoption application by copying and pasting the following link into your browser: https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/BRO/Dog Westley is being fostered in Shrewsbury, MA. The adoption fee is $500. Like Broken Tail Rescue on Facebook!. Follow Broken Tail Rescue on Instagram! Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable, so for most of the dogs, we are only guessing at the predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each dog as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label. We expect that all adopted dogs will enroll in a formal dog training class with their new owners. Obedience and training classes are an excellent way to learn more about your newly adopted dog, gain handling and training experience, and improve your relationship with your pet.

Story
With a heavy heart, we have to rehome our beautiful, sweet, Cookie. Due to our child's allergies and asthma. She's a bi-eyed Chiweenie with a real sweet spot for her family. Very protective of her people. Once she gets to know strangers she accepts them as family. She's 1.5 years old her birthday is 10/28/24. She loves to play fetch and had more snuggles than any pup out there. She's a barker. Will alert to anyone who gets close. We'd like her to be with a family who can appreciate how loyal she'll be when you gain her trust. It's hard not to fall in love with this pretty girl, her one brown, and one sky blue eyes, and her little spotted ears are so endearing. Give another shot to this love bug and take the pain off losing her away, knowing she'll be cared for properly.

These pups are in Worcester, Massachusetts too!

Story
Nova is a tiny dog with a big heart for the people she trusts most. This adorable little chihuahua mix came to the shelter after her previous owner could no longer manage her medical needs, and now Nova is hoping to find a calm, understanding home that will love her for exactly who she is. Once Nova is comfortable with people she is so much fun - enjoys walks, cuddling and barking at things that she finds annoying, Nova does have skin allergies and will most likely need ongoing apoquel medication, which costs about $40 per month. With good care, this sweet girl is ready to settle into a comfortable new chapter. Her skin was in rough shape, but she makes progress every day and is looking great. Nova can be shy and suspicious when meeting new people, and she prefers to take introductions at her own pace. Once you are part of her circle, though, she is a loyal, funny little best friend who loves chasing toys and balls around with her favorite people nearby. Nova may be able to live with another calm dog, but any potential dog house mates will have t meet her first at the shelter. If you are interested in adopting Nova, please come to the shelter on Mondays (the shelter is closed for Memorial Day), Wednesdays and Thursdays between 12-4pm during our walk-in hours. If you are unable to come to the shelter during those hours, please email dogs@worcesterarl.org to see what times may be available by appointment.

Story
Meet Petunia: 4 pounds of Chihuahua and approximately 87 pounds of personality 🌸🐾 Petunia may be tiny, but she lives life like she owns the place. This little Chihuahua powerhouse is equal parts cuddle bug, toy enthusiast, and self-appointed household supervisor. Her favorite hobby? Playing fetch with squeaky toys… and then stealing everyone else’s toys too. Sharing is apparently for other dogs. She gets along well with other dogs and enjoys having playmates, but she’s also perfectly capable of entertaining herself like the independent queen she is. One minute she’s demanding snuggle time, the next she’s off doing mysterious tiny-dog business on her own. Truly the best of both worlds. Petunia can be a little barky when she wants something or spots suspicious activity outside the window (such as leaves moving, neighbors existing, or birds having the audacity to fly by). She may be slow to warm up in new situations at first, but once she realizes everything is fine, her confidence kicks in fast. She’s house trained, does well in her crate, and absolutely loves hanging out in bed—even when you aren’t there. Why sleep in her bed when she can supervise yours instead? Because Petunia is so very tiny, she’d do best in a home with older kids or dog-savvy younger children who understand how delicate little dogs can be. She could easily be accidentally hurt by rough handling or busy toddler energy. If you’re looking for a hilarious, feisty, affectionate little sidekick with endless charm packed into a microscopic body, Petunia is ready to rule your household with love 💕🐾 If you are interested in finding out more about Petunia, please fill out an adoption application by copying and pasting the following link into your browser: https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/BRO/Dog Petunia is being fostered in Somerville, MA. Story
Meet Toby — a 5-year-old (+/-) Chihuahua with a heart full of love, a head full of opinions, and legs that are always ready to zoom. Toby is what we’d call a “selective socialite.” He’s not the type to run up to strangers and hand out friendship bracelets—but with patience (and a thorough sniff test), he’s been making progress. He’s had several positive experiences meeting new people lately, which shows how much potential he has when given time and encouragement. Basically, he’s a tiny bouncer in a fur coat who’s learning that maybe not everyone is trying to sneak into the VIP lounge. Here’s what Toby does love: 🌲 Nature walks on quiet trails, where he struts like he owns the forest. 💦 Splashing at the water’s edge—he’s not a swimmer yet, but he’s curious. 🥦 Broccoli. Yes, seriously. He’s a veggie connoisseur. 🧹 The vacuum? Not scary. Toby’s got bigger things to bark at. 🚗 Car rides are his jam—bonus points if he gets to announce his arrival out the window. 🐱 Cats? Totally fine. Zero drama there. Now, Toby isn’t without quirks. Cars on walks? He thinks they need to be put in their place, so he’ll bark and lunge to make sure they know who’s boss. Strangers? He’s still learning that new people can be okay, though he listens beautifully to direction and encouragement once he trusts his human. With patience, consistency, and maybe a little professional training, Toby has all the potential to keep growing into his best self. At home, he’s a lovable cuddle bug who adores pets and zooms around like a caffeinated squirrel when he’s excited. He’s affectionate, playful, and absolutely hilarious once he feels secure. Toby may never be your party pup or the mayor of the dog park, but he doesn’t need to be. What he will be is a fiercely loyal, endlessly entertaining little companion who will love you with everything he’s got. Adopt Toby—your spicy, snuggly adventure buddy with a bark that’s big, but a heart that’s even bigger. 🐾💚 If you are interested in finding out more about Toby, please fill out an adoption application by copying and pasting the following link into your browser: https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/BRO/Dog Toby is being fostered in Groton, MA.
