Story
Meet Westley: long dog, shy guy, backyard security specialist 🐾🌭 Westley is a 3-year-old Chiweenie weighing about 12 pounds, though genetically he seems to have said “more dachshund, please.” He’s got the long little body, the adorable waddly zoomies, and serious opinions about neighborhood activity. This sweet boy absolutely LOVES other dogs. In fact, having a playful dog buddy—or regular dog friends to romp around with—is basically a requirement for his happiness. Nothing brings Westley to life faster than backyard zoomies with canine pals. He’s social, playful, and happiest when another dog says, “Wanna run around for absolutely no reason?” Westley is very shy when meeting new people and can freeze up when he’s nervous, but he has never shown any meanness whatsoever. Once he realizes he’s safe, his curious and goofy personality starts peeking through. He actually did great at a local pet store despite being nervous about introductions, and he’s been good with calm kids and polite people he’s met along the way. He’s also cat-curious—more “what are you?” than “must chase immediately.” At home, Westley is quiet indoors… unless someone dares walk past his backyard. Then he transforms into a tiny neighborhood watch captain dedicated to alerting everyone about suspicious activity such as joggers, squirrels, and people existing on sidewalks. (The neighbors may not fully appreciate his commitment to public safety.) Westley is crate trained, loves walks, and is just beginning to discover the magical joy of toys. His new tennis ball? Life-changing. He’s still working on house training and leash manners, but he’s eager to explore the world and will thrive with patience, routine, and encouragement. If you’re looking for a gentle, funny little sidekick who loves dogs, backyard adventures, and becoming part of a pack, Westley is ready to wiggle his way into your heart 💙🐾 If you are interested in finding out more about Westley, please fill out an adoption application by copying and pasting the following link into your browser: https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/BRO/Dog Westley is being fostered in Cambridge, MA. The adoption fee is $500. Like Broken Tail Rescue on Facebook!. Follow Broken Tail Rescue on Instagram! Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable, so for most of the dogs, we are only guessing at the predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each dog as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label. We expect that all adopted dogs will enroll in a formal dog training class with their new owners. Obedience and training classes are an excellent way to learn more about your newly adopted dog, gain handling and training experience, and improve your relationship with your pet.

Story
Rita's Story Meet Rita, aka "Pumpernickel"! Rita is a distinguished senior lady of about 12–13 years old and 11 pounds of pure sweetness. With her gentle nature, laid-back personality, and adorable goofy streak, Rita has perfected the art of enjoying life's simple pleasures. This lovely little lady is happiest when she's stretched out in a sunny spot for an afternoon nap, curled up beside her favorite person for cuddles, or settling in for a cozy Netflix marathon. Rita is a world-class snuggler who believes that pets, affection, and snacks are among life's greatest treasures—and honestly, she's not wrong. Rita has a calm, easygoing personality that makes her a wonderful companion. She currently lives in a foster home with other dogs and mostly ignores them, preferring to do her own thing. Because of her relaxed demeanor, she would be perfectly happy as your one and only pet or sharing her home with other gentle, respectful canine companions. If you're looking for a loyal friend who will happily keep you company through lazy Sundays, afternoon naps, and late-night binge-watching sessions, Rita is ready to fill that role with grace, charm, and a little bit of Pumpernickel-powered silliness. Senior dogs like Rita have a special kind of magic—they know how to love deeply, appreciate every moment, and remind us to slow down and enjoy the sunshine. Rita is being fostered in Houston, TX. She is available for adoption locally or out of state. If adopted out of state (to the NE) she would come to her new home via professional transport. To request an app, email info@joyrides.org

Story
Meet Ruthie: senior in years, noodle in body, and professional couch hog 💕🐾 Ruthie is a 9lb, 11-year-old Chihuahua mix who somehow missed the memo about looking her age. She’s got the long, tall, lanky body of a tiny greyhound and just enough pep to keep life interesting—think “elegant senior with a playful streak.” She’s a quiet little lady who prefers peace and calm. Loud noises? Hard pass. Barking? Rare—but fair warning, when she does bark, it’s impressively loud for her size. Her absolute favorite place to be is on the couch with her foster mom, nose-to-nose, like they’re sharing top-secret gossip 😂. Ruthie is excellent in her crate and does wonderfully with routine. She can be a bit shy when meeting new people, but with a little time and gentle reassurance, she’s expected to grow more confident as she settles in. When it comes to exercise, Ruthie enjoys short strolls to sniff the neighborhood and stretch her long legs—marathons are not on her vision board. A cozy home, a comfy couch, and a person who appreciates a calm companion would be her dream come true. Ruthie is currently working on some reactivity issues. She does not like to be disturbed while she is sleeping and will let you know when she isn't happy with how you're touching or moving her. If you’re looking for a low-key best friend with a quirky body, Ruthie is the dog for you 💖 If you are interested in finding out more about Ruthie, please fill out an adoption application by copying and pasting the following link into your browser: https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/BRO/Dog Ruthie is being fostered in Shrewsbury, MA. Story
Meet Toby — a 5-year-old (+/-) Chihuahua with a heart full of love, a head full of opinions, and legs that are always ready to zoom. Toby is what we’d call a “selective socialite.” He’s not the type to run up to strangers and hand out friendship bracelets—but with patience (and a thorough sniff test), he’s been making progress. He’s had several positive experiences meeting new people lately, which shows how much potential he has when given time and encouragement. Basically, he’s a tiny bouncer in a fur coat who’s learning that maybe not everyone is trying to sneak into the VIP lounge. Here’s what Toby does love: 🌲 Nature walks on quiet trails, where he struts like he owns the forest. 💦 Splashing at the water’s edge—he’s not a swimmer yet, but he’s curious. 🥦 Broccoli. Yes, seriously. He’s a veggie connoisseur. 🧹 The vacuum? Not scary. Toby’s got bigger things to bark at. 🚗 Car rides are his jam—bonus points if he gets to announce his arrival out the window. 🐱 Cats? Totally fine. Zero drama there. Now, Toby isn’t without quirks. Cars on walks? He thinks they need to be put in their place, so he’ll bark and lunge to make sure they know who’s boss. Strangers? He’s still learning that new people can be okay, though he listens beautifully to direction and encouragement once he trusts his human. With patience, consistency, and maybe a little professional training, Toby has all the potential to keep growing into his best self. At home, he’s a lovable cuddle bug who adores pets and zooms around like a caffeinated squirrel when he’s excited. He’s affectionate, playful, and absolutely hilarious once he feels secure. Toby may never be your party pup or the mayor of the dog park, but he doesn’t need to be. What he will be is a fiercely loyal, endlessly entertaining little companion who will love you with everything he’s got. Adopt Toby—your spicy, snuggly adventure buddy with a bark that’s big, but a heart that’s even bigger. 🐾💚 If you are interested in finding out more about Toby, please fill out an adoption application by copying and pasting the following link into your browser: https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/BRO/Dog Toby is being fostered in Groton, MA. Story
Meet Milo 🐾 Milo is an adorable 11 lb shadow pup who loves being close to his person. Whether he’s relaxing by your side or following you from room to room, he’s happiest just being near you. He can be a bit shy when meeting new people, so he does best when allowed to approach on his own terms. Once he feels comfortable, his sweet and loving personality really shines. Milo gets excited for walks and enjoys playing with other dogs, especially those who are gentle and respectful. If a dog comes on too strong, he’ll let them know with a little growl—he’s just advocating for his space. On walks, he may get a bit over-hyped or nervous when spotting dogs from a distance, but he’s easily redirected and responds great to treats. He loves a good game of fetch and is always up for chasing a ball. Milo is also very food-motivated, which makes training fun and rewarding. At home, he’s an absolute dream—he sleeps wonderfully in his crate and is fully potty trained. If you are interested in finding out more about Milo, please fill out an adoption application by copying and pasting the following link into your browser: https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/BRO/Dog Milo is being fostered in Grafton, MA.
