Story
Hello! Mindi is about 5 years old now and is need of a loving home. She was my grandmother’s before she passed and I have been keeping her at my house while looking for a more suitable environment. I am unable to keep her because of my work schedule. She is house trained, gets along with my other 2 dogs, loves being outside, and rolls on her back for belly scratches when she’s comfortable!

Story
How this pet arrived:Jude was brought in by his previous owner on June 3, 2026. Why this pet is the one for you:Jude is a charming guy who enjoys his walks and likes to do things on his own terms - he's more like a cat than a dog! He appreciates having his space respected and may take some time to feel comfortable with new people. The best way to build a relationship with Jude is to let him approach when he's ready and allow him to move away if he needs a break. Jude would thrive in a calm, patient home that can keep his world small while he settles in. Think quiet walks, cozy naps and plenty of time to adjust. Once he builds a bond with you, his true personality will blossom! Jude may benefit from a Fear Free veterinarian and gentle, reward-based handling for any future grooming needs. With patience and understanding, Jude is sure to become a wonderful companion and loyal friend! At SDHS:Jude has been vaccinated, microchipped and neutered. He is now ready for adoption! Story
How this pet arrived:Maumau was brought in by a community member on June 27, 2026. Why this pet is the one for you: Meet Maumau, a quirky and sensitive soul who is looking for a very special "inner circle" to join! While she might look like she's ready to party, Maumau is actually a shy wallflower who prefers quiet nights in and a predictable routine over the hustle and bustle of the big city. Maumau is a girl who knows her worth-especially when it involves her snacks and her favorite lounging spots! She prefers to be the solo star of the show, so she's looking for a home where she can be your one-and-only dog. She's also a big fan of personal space; she likes to be the one to check you out first and decides when it's time for head scritches. Because she's a "refined" lady with specific tastes, she's looking for an experienced owner and a calm home with older kids (12+) who understand that sometimes a girl just needs a little "me time." For Maumau, the best adventures happen at home. She's looking for a family that is happy to keep her world small and cozy at first-think quiet backyard sniff-fests instead of busy pet stores or big family reunions. If you're a pro at reading doggy body language and love the idea of a slow-and-steady bond, Maumau is ready to show you just how sweet life can be when you take it one paw-step at a time! At SDHS:Maumau has been vaccinated, microchipped and spayed. She is now ready for adoption! Primary Color: Cream Secondary Color: Tan Weight: 27.6 Age: 5yrs 0mths 3wks

Story
How Ellie arrived:Ellie was brought in by a community member on May 27, 2026. Why Ellie is the one for you: Say hello to Ellie! Ellie is a sweet, sensitive soul who will need to take her time building trust with new people. She will warm up and show her affectionate side, but will like her space from time to time. She would do best in a household without the hustle and bustle of other dogs or young children (under 10). As a senior pup, she has some arthritis that may need ongoing pain medication to keep her comfortable. Once she feels at home with you, Ellie is a happy, affectionate companion who will bring lots of love to her new family. If you'd like to meet this fluffy friend, speak with our team today! At SDHS:Ellie has been vaccinated, microchipped and spayed. Ellie is now ready for adoption! Primary Color: Red Weight: 48 Age: 10yrs 2mths 3wks

What are you waiting for? Apply today! Click here to apply for the pet CODE RED AT PHOENIX, AZ- 8/10 DEADLINE!- ID #A5168973 –“POPCORN”- ADORABLE, 37 LB YOUNG CHOW AT MARICOPA COUNTY ANIMAL CARE, WEST LOCATION- RESCUE ONLY (NHO) – NEEDS FOSTER AS RESCUES CANNOT HELP WITHOUT A FOSTER AND PLACE FOR A DOG TO GO! Was easy to leash, accepted pets, non reactive to other dogs passing by, please see detailed notes RESCUE ONLY for being a chow! NOW ON DEADLINE FOR 8/10 TO COMMIT OR “May be at risk for euthanasia 8/11/26 or sooner if warranted” per shelter. THUS, HE WILL LIKELY BE EUTHANIZED 8/11 in AM. HE IS “RESCUE ONLY” BY A “NEW HOPE PARTNER ONLY” which means he can NOT be adopted from the shelter directly, and a New Hope partner must pull him out. Emergency/soon to be euthanized! We are in urgent need of finding a dedicated foster, ideally familiar with chows or or similar Asian or spitz breeds. POPCORN" is a very stunning chow boy weighing only 37 lbs and estimated to be only 2 years old. He was made Rescue Only for basically acting like most friendly chows would in a scary shelter environment. However, he can be seen sweet and calm in several videos we have, just a little shy which is to be expected. Shelter notes from state, “ 7/31/2026 Dog was a front of kennel, ears perked, tail wagging. Accepted treats, easy to leash. Walked with light pull, stop and go to sniff. No issues directing to main yard; handler attached extended line before dropping leash. Dog kept distance, exploring at quick pace, panting, chuffing. No interest in handlers, would not approach when called and only occasionally made eye contact. Dog had no reaction to another dog being walked outside of fence. Handlers continued to call to dog, attempting to coax, but dog would not approach, kept distance. Handlers were able to call dog into catch pen to retrieve leash; dog stood at gate, wagging tail, whining. Once leash was picked up, handlers walked dog back to main gate. Dog allowed some petting on top of head. Light pull on return. Dog would not enter kennel wing, pulled back and bit at leash. Handlers walked dog to outside gate, attempted to lead dog in, dog continued to pull back and thrash at leash, biting it occasionally. Would not follow treat trail. Dog yelped, whipped head. Handler gave dog a few moments to settle. Dog was panting, wagging tail. Second handler used sort board to block pathway, then used second sort board to guide dog forward as first handler applied moderate leash pressure. Dog stepped into kennel, began eating treats. Leash removed via clip lead. Dog turned towards handler, wagging tail, panting.” Even though Popcorn’s behavior notes were not bad, and he had no further evaluation, on 8/5, he was suddenly made Rescue Only alleging, “8/5/2026 15:56 Canine has shown low tolerance for handling and resistance to returning to the kennel with associated concerning behaviors. Placement with a New Hope Partner is required by close of business 8/10/26 to facilitate further behavioral evaluation and support. May be at risk for euthanasia 8/11/26 or sooner if warranted.” So sad and ridiculous! Additional behavior and medical details for Popcorn may be found on this link:. https://apps.pets.maricopa.gov/pri.../Details/OTMw-NDE1-MTRB We are therefore urgently looking for ideally a foster or foster to adopt for Popcorn. This shelter has made many chow and chow mixes Rescue only, and already killed many who were also shy and young adults. Please do not let this young boy meet the same awful fate as too many of the others. If you may be interested in fostering, fostering to adopt, or helping in some other way (ie., pledging for his rescue), please email robinmorgan@cox.net asap at Southern California Chow Chow Rescue Network who is trying to find placement asap, AND also fill out a foster application on https://dogfoster.org/ so all entities can work on pairing a foster to a rescue group to help. Rescues can assist with neuter and medical. Rescue groups may contact the shelter directly at ACCAltPlacement@maricopa.gov and by calling 602-506-7387 and providing ID.
