Meet Otis! Such a loving affectionate boy!! Otis is a 2 year old spaniel mix. He has the cutest curls on the top of his coat so maybe some Curly coated Retriever mixed in, but he isn't very big. Otis was rescued out of the San Bernardino shelter which sadly is overflowing with dogs that desperately need rescue. Euthanasia rates are very high so we were so thankful we had space to save this beautiful boy. Otis is now safe, happy and loved while waiting for his forever family to find him. He is a very sweet, happy, and friendly boy who absolutely loves people. Matthew enjoys being around his humans and has a wonderful, loving personality. Welcome to Camp Cocker Rescue, Doc! UPDATE (10/24/26): DOC HAS SOME VERY EXCITING NEWS TO SHARE!! 🎉 Doc has just had his four week post-op recheck, as well as x-rays of his left knee. The healing is going well and the extra good news is that because Doc is no longer putting additional strain on his right knee when he walks, his doctor does not believe he will need knee surgery on the right side. He will, of course, need continued physical therapy for awhile. He has a lot of atrophy in the rear left leg as a result of not using that leg properly since birth. With his current foster, he is getting daily physical therapy, but once he’s adopted, a reasonable P.T. schedule might go something like twice a week now, then as he gets stronger, go to once a week, then go to every other week, etc. Depending on how well his legs respond, it could be six more months of physical therapy. So much has to do with how his legs respond. IN CASE YOU’RE ONLY RECENTLY DISCOVERING DOC, HERE’S HIS STORY: We rescued this handsome tri-color Cocker Spaniel from the Harbor Shelter in San Pedro, CA. He had several medical issues that needed attention. He came to us emaciated, his hips and ribs prominent due to no fat and muscle loss. His rear legs with some ataxia (showing incoordination). His ears were infected, and his teeth showed heavy tartar. For the past 6 months, Doc has been getting “the works” to treat all of these conditions. Gold star treatment all the way! For starters, Doc had a cardiologist work up and was diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM). This disease weakens the heart muscles and can prevent them from effectively pumping blood. He’s been placed on heart medication called Pimobendan (aka Vetmedin) as well as Taurine supplements to support heart health. The good news is that he can now safely undergo anesthesia for surgery! Doc has required neuter, lip fold, and dental surgeries. He also required surgery for his left knee (that knee was completely out of the socket, with bone rubbing on bone) which would continue to need to be followed by physical therapy. It was anticipated that he would then need to have right knee surgery (that knee that was luxating in and out of the socket) followed by continued physical therapy. The good news in our update is that he will not need right knee surgery! Whew! We know, that’s a lot to go through, but we believe it’s worth it to give Doc the chance to have a pain-free life! In the mean time, he’s been thoroughly enjoying his foster home and siblings, and seems to understand that our whole community is sending love his way! *Age is always an estimate based on veterinary examination. Welcome to Camp Cocker, Hero! *Hero is being fostered in San Luis Obispo, Ca. Hero was relinquished to us by his owners. Although his family loved him with all of their hearts, their life circumstances prevented them from being able to manage his healthcare needs. The owners truly loved them and struggled to do their best for this sweet dog. Hero is sweet with people he knows, but having missed out on socialization in the real world, he’s not used to walks, meeting strangers, going to the vet, groomer, or anywhere in public! Hero has led a very sheltered life so far and because he has been co-dependent on his littermates, his own confidence has been stunted. He will do best in a home with another confident dog so he can have someone to model how a dog handles real world experiences. It’s amazing to see how much happier and less-stressed littermates can become once they have a chance to fly on their own.
