Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. 2nd Chance 4 Life Rescue is primarily a sanctuary for senior and medically needy dogs.  Every once in awhile you will see younger dogs but for the most part our dogs live out their life at the ranch at the request of their previous owners or their owners families.  We have many sponsorship dogs.  Our sponsors love to keep in touch and know how their sponsored fur buddy is doing :) When we have foster families we are thrilled to be able to take adoptable younger dogs :)  So if you have ever thought about becoming fosters please feel free to go to our foster/volunteer page and fill out an application. The Ranch located at 737 Taylor Rd., Windsor, PA is always looking for dedicated volunteers that will commit to at least a 2 hour shift per week at the rescue.  Volunteers work in play yards, help with laundry and feeding.  Some enjoy landscaping or carpentry projects and some like to bake for the healing center visitors :) Thank you for supporting our mission of caring for the elderly and medically needy souls that need us! Addie is a sweet Collie mix with a heart of gold! This quiet, easygoing girl is well-behaved, crate- and house-trained, and great with kids. She loves meeting new people, is excellent on a leash, and always impresses everyone with her calm, friendly demeanor. Addie would thrive in a home with another dog to be her fur friend and a securely fenced yard where she can safely play and explore. She’s truly a plug-and-play dog ready to find her forever family and share a lifetime of love and adventures. REQUIREMENTS: Fenced Yard, Another DogVisit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet. Please fill out an adoption application: Adoption application (Dog) Adoption Application (Cat)   Please understand we do not adopt out dogs to families with children under the age of 5. We do not take the adoption process lightly, and will do everything in our power to make sure the animal is placed correctly the first time around for your sake and theirs. Thank you for choosing to adopt not shop! Story
Riley, thought to be born in January or February of 2015 is a tricolor, smooth coat, collie/border collie mix with some brindle markings on his legs. He has experienced 2 failed adoptions. He was adopted from us when he was about 6 months old and was returned to us 3 years later when the male member of the adoptive family, who had Alzheimer’s, became abusive toward him. In time he began developing his self-confidence again and began to lose his fear of men. Even though he was still somewhat leery of men he didn’t know, he would actually seek attention from men with whom he was familiar. He got along well with the dogs in his foster home but he behaved aggressively toward any new foster dog that periodically come in. He is not good with cats as he showed aggression toward the clinic cat at our vet’s office. Riley was adopted a second time, but after a year of trying different techniques to manage Riley’s difficult behaviors his second adopter felt that she could no longer handle him and once again Riley was returned to us. He left us weighing 55 pounds and returned, markedly overweight, at 78 pounds. He is now back to a healthy weight of 55 pounds. Riley has had extensive training. He is quite smart and learns quickly. He rides well in a car and walks well on a leash unless he meets a dog while out on the walk, in which case he will pull and act aggressively. Riley is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, is heartworm negative and is being kept on heartworm and flea and tick prevention to maintain his good health. Riley is currently in Arkansas. His adoption donation is $415 which includes the $1655 transport fee. The first step in the adoption process is to fill out an online adoption application. You can find a copy of that application here. We sometimes receive a lot of interest on an animal and can't always reply to each email in a timely manner. An application does not obligate you to adopt from us, but it does show that you are serious about the adoption process. Please remember we are all volunteers. After you submit your application, please allow a few days for a volunteer to review your application. During this time your vet reference will be checked and a volunteer with determine if it is the best match for you and the animal. Applications are not approved on a first come, first serve basis. We match up the best home for the animal, so even if the pet has other applications, this does not mean he/she will be adopted to that home. Once your application has been approved a volunteer with contact you to set up a phone interview. This is the perfect time for you to ask any questions you have about the adoption process and the animal you are interested in

Story
Current Location: Nokesville, VA Hello there! My name is Winter, and I’m as magical as my name suggests ❄️🐾 I arrived at my OPH foster home on February 18, and I’m settling in nicely while showing everyone just how sweet, playful, and snuggly I am. Be sure to check back for updates on my blossoming personality—and, of course, plenty of adorable photos! A Little About Me… I’m a happy, curious puppy who loves to play ball! Toss it once and I’ll be your biggest fan forever. Fetch time is the best time—especially when I get to celebrate with tail wags and puppy zoomies. I’m also a very special girl because I’m deaf—but don’t worry, that just means I experience the world in my own amazing way. I’m currently learning hand signals, and I’m super smart! So far I’m already learning signals for: sit, come, my name (yes, I have a signal for that!), eat, lay down, good job, and potty time (pee and poo each have their own signals). This week we’re starting vibrate collar training, my foster mom says! I’m not quite sure what that is yet, but if it’s like my other training, I’m going to love it—because training means treats! I’m also doing great with my house manners. I’m crate trained and potty trained, which makes me a pretty impressive young pup if I do say so myself! With patience, love, and consistency, I’ll keep learning more signals as I grow. If you’d like to learn more about the joys of living with and training a deaf dog, check out Deaf Dogs Rock—they have wonderful resources and inspiration. I’m Searching For… 🐾 A patient home where I won’t be left alone for more than about four hours (at least until I’m older). I’m still a puppy, which means if I get bored or lonely, I might make some “creative decorating choices.” I promise I’m not naughty—just young! 🐾 A forever family—not a “for right now” family. As I grow, I’ll need guidance, structure, and lots of encouragement to become the very best dog I can be. Learning tricks like sit, stay, and come (with hand signals!) would be so much fun. Professional training would also help us bond and set us up for success. 🐾 And most importantly… love. I’m dreaming of a mom or dad who will snuggle with me, play ball with me, cheer me on while I learn, and love me forever and ever. I’m ready for my happily-ever-after. Could that be with you? If so, don’t wait—this kind of sweetness (and cuteness!) won’t be available for long. 💕

Story
Current Location: Union Bridge, MD Meet Edgar Edgar is a one year old Border Collie and he is everything you would hope for in one of the most brilliant breeds on the planet. Playful, friendly, attentive, and almost unnervingly smart, Edgar is the kind of dog who is always thinking, always watching, and always ready for whatever comes next. He already knows sit, down, and paw, and he picks up new things with the kind of speed that will genuinely impress you. He is food motivated and deeply eager to please, which makes training him an absolute joy. He responds well to correction, takes direction beautifully, and brings his whole self to every interaction. When Edgar decides you are his person, you will feel it. This boy needs to move and think. Long walks, active play, and plenty of mental stimulation are not negotiable for Edgar, they are what he was built for. He would absolutely thrive in dog sports like agility, barn hunt, or obedience rallies. Anything fast, fun, and challenging is going to bring out the very best in him. An active family who loves to get outside and do things will find the most incredible partner in Edgar. But here is the thing about Border Collies that Edgar demonstrates perfectly. After a good run and a solid play session, he is more than happy to settle in and snuggle up with you for a movie night. He works hard and he rests well, and that balance makes him a genuinely wonderful companion for everyday life. He is house trained, crate trained, good with other dogs, great with kids, and friendly with new people. He does not mind being left alone, which speaks to his overall confidence and stability. He is loyal, engaged, and deeply interested in being close to his people whenever he can be. Edgar is not looking for just any home. He is looking for a family that will match his energy, challenge his mind, and reward his tremendous heart. If that sounds like you, Edgar is going to be the best decision you ever made.
