Story
Meet Sophie: A 2–3 Year-Old Mix Looking for a Forever Home-we’re not sure the mix, but one vet thought Coonhound. We were guessing Mastiff, but she isn’t huge though. Maybe when all filled in, 80-85 lbs. Sophie is a courageous and affectionate dog who recently traveled from Texas to find her. Age/Breed:** 2–3 years old Location:** Bozrah, CT History:** Has undergone heartworm treatment and completed obedience training Personality:** Sweet, eager to please, and full of potential with the right guidance What Sophie Needs in a Home Large-breed experienced adopter: ** Understanding decompression and how to work with a rescued dog helps set them up for success with their new family Kids: Sophie is really good with the children in her foster home (ages 9 and 11). Note: Any new dog should have supervised introductions with kids in the home. Other dogs:** Gets along with larger dogs with proper introductions. This standard applies to every adopted dog. We do not recommended cats or small dogs for Sophie. Intro/Decompression:** A patient, slow-introductions approach will bring out the best in Sophie. Important Notes Protections and patience are key. Following a decompression plan will help Sophie settle into her new routine and become the best dog in your home. Story
In November 2024, Firestarter was discovered at a dump site in rural Alabama with heavy chains and metal rods cuffed to her leg. She was terrified of everything and everyone. Over time and thanks to her foster’s patient care, she learned to trust again. Firestarter has grown into a charming extrovert who loves the company of people and other dogs. She gets along with cats too—as long as they don’t mind her playful nature! Although she’s an active girl with an adventurous spirit, she’s exceptionally well-behaved and mellow at home once she has had her daily walks. Firestarter is fostered in Ridgefield, CT, and is available for local or out-of-state adoption as long as the adopter can travel to meet her. To get the adoption process started, please send us an application at https://bit.ly/rosr-adopt-foster.

Story
Introducing Wren — A Hound with Heart! Before arriving at the shelter, Wren’s life was a sad one. He spent his days tied up outside, without the comfort and care every dog deserves. Now he’s discovering what a humane life indoors feels like, and he’s slowly learning that the world can be a much kinder place.Wren is a medium-sized, very sweet boy who absolutely loves his walks. Like the true hound he is, he enjoys following interesting scents along the trail and keeping a watchful eye out for squirrels and rabbits. When something exciting catches his attention, you might hear the classic houndy howl that hound lovers know and adore. This affectionate boy loves to be loved and is highly motivated by treats. In fact, Wren is clever enough to quickly figure out which pocket holds the goodies, and he’ll happily give it a curious nudge with his nose.Because of his hound instincts and personality, Wren would do best with experienced hound owners who understand and appreciate the breed. A cat-free home will be important for him as well.Wren has come a long way from the lonely life he once knew. Now he’s ready for a home where he can finally be what he was always meant to be: a beloved companion. You can begin the adoption process for Wren right now by filling out an application on our website, www.humanecny.org; or email info@humanecny.org; or call us at (315) 457-8762.Contact HumaneCNY if interested in this animal. You can fill out application to adopt at the shelter.

Story
Meet Shelby — Our Sweet Survivor, “Miss Smiley” The Fastest, Happiest Little Tripod You’ll Ever Meet Just minutes before her scheduled euthanasia, Shelby’s life was hanging by a thread. She arrived at a severely overcrowded shelter with her back right leg completely snapped in half, dragging painfully behind her small 34-pound body. The damage was too severe to save it, and her only chance at a pain-free life was amputation. But with rescue, love, and the will to live, Shelby fought her way back. Today, she’s not just surviving — she is thriving. This girl is PROOF that three legs don’t slow a dog down one bit. She is unbelievably fast, extremely energetic, and loves sprinting, playing, and wrestling with all the other dogs like she’s been doing it her whole life. She is a full-speed, joy-filled tripod rocket.  Shelby would do best in a home with a fence, so she can run and play freely. Shelby also carries mangled scars around her neck — quiet reminders of what she’s endured — yet her heart remains the gentlest thing on earth. She’s affectionately nicknamed “Miss Smiley” because every time someone approaches her, she lifts her lip in the most heart-melting “Elvis grin.” It’s her way of saying thank you and I love you all at once. At just 1–2 years old, this black and tan coonhound mix is everything you could dream of in a companion: Heartworm negative, up-to-date on all vaccines & preventions Wonderful with children, adults, and dogs Gentle, calm, affectionate, and eager to please Startles with loud noises and storms — she does best in a calm, steady home with a fence VERY food and treat motivated — if food is around, she is on it like nobody’s business. Shelby is a certified treat hog and will happily work for snacks all day long. Shelby is truly one of those once-in-a-lifetime dogs — a living reminder that love can heal even the deepest wounds. She has already survived the unthinkable; now she just needs her forever family to give her the soft landing she’s always deserved. If you’re ready to open your heart to a dog who will adore you endlessly, Miss Smiley is waiting — tail wagging, lip lifted, and heart wide open. Her $450 adoption fee covers medical care, vaccines, spay, microchip, leg amputation, foster care and transportation to NY. ##2537000##
