Sassy18 pounds7 years oldFostered in Smithfield, NC   Short version: Sweet, timid, great with dogs, needs another dog of any age, good in a home with kids over 8 and fine visiting younger ones, crate trained, feline friendly We’ve come to realize that Sassy’s name is likely ironic – she’s the opposite of Sassy! This gal is sweet as pie, timid, anxious and definitely the submissive gal in a foster home of bossy dachshunds. But not to disappoint – she’s got that stubborn streak of a spoiled rotten dachshund. Her old owner fed her people food and she put up a hunger strike that only a dachshund can muster in protest. But we’ve got her eating dog food, although she does prefer to have her people nearby during this activity. Sassy loves her person. And wants to be nearby as much as possible. But she likes to be next to you not attached as humanly possible like some dachshunds that have no sense of personal space. Her favorite spot in on the top of the couch above the shoulder of a person – nearby but not on top of. And at night, she happily sleeps on a bed on the floor near her foster mom. Sassy gets along with kids and really enjoys the children in her foster home – probably preferring them to adults. But because she is nervous, loud noises scare her and send her into another room. Because of this, we are looking for a home with kids over 8, but she would do great with visiting little ones, such as grandkids. Sassy is housetrained when kept on a schedule. And she does great on a leash – loves to go for walks. She does great in a crate – takes a minute to settle and then does fine. This sweetie gets along great with other dogs and actually gains confidence from them. We are looking for a home where she has a dog friend. She also does fine with the cat in her foster home. Sassy is UTD, spayed, had a dental, heartworm negative and microchipped. She’s got some seasonal allergies right now (who doesn’t???) but some benedryl solves the problem. Her new family will need to drive to Smithfield (outside of Raleigh) to adopt – no transports. We prefer to adopt to families within 3 to 4 hours of Central NC. Story

Edmund is a man of mystery -- his past is simply baffling to us. Supposedly found in a drain ditch by a woman who then surrendered him to a vet clinic in Charlotte, Edmund then found his way to our organization when a vet tech at the clinic stepped up to see to his safety. We are not really sure what story is true about Edmund's past but there are a few clues that lead us to believe at one time he was much loved. Read on to hear more about this sweet senior guy... Edmund is a large (overweight) tweenie senior fella -- his rambunctious puppy days are well behind him, now decidedly more inclined to bake in the sunshine on the porch than run amuck with the young guns. At some point in Edmund's life, his owner cared enough to have a back surgery done (we can spy a faint scar down his spine which is a tell-tale sign) which has left him a little wobbly. Edmund doesn't seem to really mind the wobble and just asks that you help him regain his balance when he loses it as he putters around. At a recent vet visit to get Edmund evaluated we discovered that his vision is severely limited. Again, Edmund isn't really bothered by this and just wants to be by your side so that you can be his eyes for him. Edmund rides well in the car and prefers sofa surfing to sidewalk surfing most any day of the week -- so if you are looking for a walking partner, Edmund does not accept the position. Edmund does okay in a kennel but much prefers to just be with you (and he will vocalize this to let you know his displeasure). While in foster care, Edmund has been around other dogs and cats and been perfectly content with their company. Because Edmund is in his golden years and moves a bit slower these days, we think a home with small kids might not be the best choice though we really do not think Edmund would ever hurt anyone at all, just might make him a bit nervous. All-in-all we have vowed to Edmund to restore that one wonderful forever home he had at one point that cared so deeply enough to see him through a back surgery. We have told him that in our rescue, all dogs get a 5-star home prepared to give them the absolute best of the best! He is neutered, vaccinated and just had a dental. Edmund has been flagged as an anesthesia risk so he can no longer undergo surgeries of any kind (including future dentals) because it turns out sedation now makes him extra sleepy -- otherwise this guy has had a complete senior blood panel to be sure that he is in working order (and indeed he is)! He has so much love to give to a home with a perfectly shaped Edmund hole in their heart. ##2041229##

Meet Calvin, a 3 year-old standard chocolate longhair piebald that stood in line twice to get ALL the looks! And while Calvin got ALL the good looks, unfortunately he's got plenty of needs too! Before you fall head-over-heels in love with his hazel eyes and curly brown locks of fur…please read on! Calvin is what we call “HIGH MAINTENANCE” in a dog — he has severe allergies that we simply have not been able to completely curb — and his adopter will need to be prepared to continue the battle to keep Calvin’s allergies under control.  The great news is that thru multiple tests and trial and error we can provide the very long and hopefully complete list of all items that are a no-go for Calvin's wellbeing and his people's peace of mind.Calvin’s minimum monthly budget : Apoquel $60-$80 for 2 month supply, Allermyl Shampoo for his weekly medicated baths $31.21 for 4-month supply, Benadryl for when his allergies get intense $10, Calvin’s weekly food budget for his raw diet and goat milk $50…and don't forget his heartworm and flea and tick meds. BUT, the amount of love Calvin gives you back in return? PRICELESS! Calvin was surrendered by an owner that loved him deeply but unfortunately her life took an unexpected shift when she no longer had someone to look after Calvin when she traveled for work as a flight attendant. We can tell you that we rarely see the level of premium care that Calvin had in his prior home — he has been very loved. What Calvin costs his people in the pocketbook, he more than makes up for in the love department. This boy is the definition of a lover boy and you cannot help but just adore his cute curly standard dachshund coat and positive attitude. Calvin does sometimes require muzzling and wearing a cone at the times when his allergies are at peak (like spring) and sometimes to avoid eating things along the way when he goes on walks. Thankfully he does tolerate both pretty well and doesn’t fuss too much when they are required fashion accessories. Speaking of walks — Calvin might walk at a decent pace for about 30 minutes, but he will likely never be a runner or a hiker. He prefers sofa surfing to sidewalk surfing — or long naps on a blanket (no down or feathers, please) in the backyard. His form of exercise is batting his gorgeous eyes at you and trying to get you to give him a belly rub. Calvin does well on car rides, enjoys bar life, and is happy to join you wherever you go in life so long as he can be with you! Calvin gets along okay with other dogs as he is in a foster home with 2 fur siblings — but he is also used to soaking up all the attention and would gladly do that too (and let’s be honest — you might only be able to afford one dog if you adopt Calvin)! Calvin will be a friend that comes with benefits -- in that he is completely housetrained and crate trained (I mean honestly, is he even a dachshund?)...and leash trained too (though we are hoping you read above that the only time he really gets excited for a leash is to go hang out at his favorite bars around town!So if you find that you are an interested adopter with an extra $300 monthly available for his upkeep -- then we know that Calvin is the guy for you! Calvin’s needs really require an adopter that is home more than they are not (bonus points to adopters that work from home or can take Calvin to work with them-- he is currently a well-behaved office dog ). a close eye to keep him from self-harm, and a home that would be invested in continuing the battle of trying to wean Calvin off as much medicine as possible in hopes that one day we can get this sweet boy to the point of never having to use the muzzle and cone to prevent hot spots.  Further bonus points if you love bathing and trimming dogs. Calvin NEEDS and ENJOYS his home baths once a week and fairly regular trims and is wonderfully patient thru both.  Calvin’s adopters need to be within a 3 hour drive of Central NC. He comes with an entire medical history from several specialty vets to help get him started where he lands. ##2041256##

Meet Micah, who came to us as an owner surrender. He was recently adopted from us, but just didn't seem to like the male adult in the home and was returned. He has been back with us for a month or so and is doing excellent. He is a 3-year-old Dachshund mix, neutered, fully vetted and gets along with all dogs. He is housebroken and crate trained.
