Meet Sailor! This gorgeous dobie pup recently came to AFRP with a heartbreaking story. Sailor was found emaciated and tied to a fence, in desperate need of help. Now, she's on the road to a fulfilling life but she's looking for a furever family! Sailor is your typical pup, and would love to find a cozy home to spend her holidays in! She's still young, so she's looking for an active home and would likely do just fine with another playful pup. At this time, it's currently unknown how she may do with cats. Sailor would love to find experienced adult adopters, but may do well with families who have dog-savvy children over the age of ten at this time. Sailor will require pre-registration to general obedience classes with proof sent to AFRP prior to adoption. Sailor is also seeking a foster home! MEET BLITZ, an 85-lb stunning Doberman male who is waiting for his forever home. Blitz is a large Dobie, almost 2 years old. He is a dark red, almost chocolate color and is magnificent in appearance. Blitz is currently in training in the Los Angeles area to overcome some fears and quirks he has had in the past. He is affectionate with people he knows but in the past was tense and suspicious with strangers, especially if he is in a confined space. He can also be a bit stubborn, though his training is helping tremendously. Blitz gets along great with other dogs-- he has previously lived happily with a female Doberman in his foster home. Because of his size and strength, a home without small children is mandatory. Blitz has high energy and would benefit from having a yard, where he can run and play. Blitz is also hypo-thyroid so is on inexpensive thyroid medication, which will likely be forever. We believe Blitz is of European ancestry and like all Euro-Dobies, he has heavier bones and a larger head than the more petite American Dobies. Blitz is without question a lot of dog! But he is a lot of really good dog. Doberman or large-dog experience is a must for his adoption. Please email for an application.

Meet Spencer, the adorable dobie mix puppy. This guy is already pretty large for his age at 27lbs! He came into the Shelter as a stray so we don’ t know much about his life before now. Spencer is hanging out in a foster home to help learn some life skills and manners as well as work on some confidence building. His foster reports that he is quite shy but warms up with patience. He has been around dog-savvy dogs in the foster home and may enjoy a canine friend in his next home after a meet `n greet at the Shelter. If you are a dog savvy adopter looking for a dog to blossom in your home, consider coming to the Shelter to set up a meeting with Spencer today. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw!Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
