Story
Maxfield was rescued from a high-kill shelter in Texas on a whim from an SSR volunteer. He was at risk of euthanasia so she brought him home instead. He spent two years living with his foster in Texas, and she treated him like one of her own dogs. Eventually she decided it was time for him to find his forever family and head north to Virginia.  Maxfield has shown signs of dog reactivity so he is currently with our training partner, Sadie's Rules, in Nellysford, VA. Max has had some unfortunate encounters with dogs in the past and has even been attacked previously. Poor Max was even bit while out on a leashed neighborhood walk with his foster in TX prior to coming to VA. A stray came upon them and she was unable to safely remove Max before that stray attacked. This old guy has suffered a lot of trauma in his TX life and we promised him a brighter future here up North! Are you the bright spot in his life? Max prefers to be the center of your world and would do better as the only dog in your home. He does not like when other dogs get in his personal space because of what he has experienced  (and who can blame him?) but he can coexist with other dogs. As a protective measure, when Max is out on the trail at training with numerous other dogs, he often wears a basket muzzle. He needs to know his new owner has his back and will protect him and not put him in dangerous situations. Max was already treated for heartworm disease and is negative. He is allergic to chicken and does really well on the raw diet he is on. His previous foster can share information regarding the holistic protocol and supplements she found successful in keeping him healthy. The finishing touches of his training program are wrapping up and Max is actively looking for his forever home! The  15/10 Foundation  has launched an initiative to encourage the adoptions of German Shepherds and German Shepherd mixes over the age of 5 years. Maxfield has been nominated and approved for adoption fee sponsorship. Story
Ashley has experienced more challenges than most dogs go through in their lifetime. She was very happily owned when her owner suddenly passed away. After his passing, Ashley spent a lot of time crated and became very fearful of the world. Luckily, her late owner’s will had an estate set aside for her and required her to be sent to a no-kill rescue.    Ashley was brought into SSR and put into foster care. She was slowly coming out of her shell when she spontaneously ruptured a disc in her back while running around in the yard, leaving her paralyzed in her backend. Ashley now had to be expressed daily, picked up to be moved around, and endure a lot of veterinary procedures. She eventually developed pressure sores on her hind legs that became infected. Along with being paralyzed, Ashley was facing amputation as well because of these sores that would not heal despite months of bandaging and wound care.    After almost a year of non-stop vet appointments and worsening conditions, SSR found a new vet to transfer Ashley too that would try new treatments. We were also able to find a new foster with most availability to care for a special needs dog and take her to her appointments and do her bandaging.    After less than a month of being under new care, Ashley began to heal and started thriving. Her pressure sores are healing and she will soon no longer require wound dressings! She also started a new physical therapy regime and her reflexes in her back legs are getting more prominent. We are even getting her a custom made wheelchair for her to run around in!    At one point, Ashley’s condition was so poor that euthanasia was being discussed. We are so happy to report that we found an unimaginable solution for her so she can enjoy the rest of her years! Ashley now spends her days running through fields in her wheelchair, attending sporting events, and going on walks in her stroller. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.  If you are an approved adopter and are interested in this dog, please let your case worker know. Story
Peaches is amazing!  She is affectionate, loves to cuddle, and loves having her chest scratched between her arms. She enjoys stretching out for a good car ride. She loves to play with toys and will play by herself but would very much enjoy someone to play with her. She is a little bit of a couch potato when she needs to be but also enjoys walks and playing outside with her people. Peaches loves children of any age. She would be best around children that are out of the toddler stages as she could knock them over. She is spayed, house trained, and listens very well. She knows all the basic commands and is expanding on her training each day! Peaches is a larger GSD, she is tall and weighs around 85 pounds now, she was only 36 pounds when the rescue took her in. Peaches prefers to be the only animal in the house. If there are other dogs in the house older calm males she does better with, than females or very active young dogs. She does have a prey drive and will chase bunnies and squirrels if not corrected.  She does not get along with other dogs at first, she takes a long time to warm up to them. Her fosters are continuously working with her and she just completed her board and train program at Creature Comfort Inn Strasburg, VA. Peaches has climbed mountains with her training and would love someone to continue to work with her.  She has made great progress and has potential for so much more!  Be sure to check out some of her training videos below and on Creature Comfort Inn YouTube channel. Peaches has EPI short for Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency which just means her pancreas doesn't produce enough enzymes to break down the food properly. The enzyme powder that is added to her food at each meal costs roughly $39 per month.  Her B12 supplement is $8 per month and her food is around $60 dollars per month. So please don't let EPI scare you.  It is very basic and easy to manage.  Peaches is doing so well and is very healthy.  Won't you please apply to adopt me or request to meet me? I am located in Round Hill, VA.  Please review our adoption process,  www.shenandoahrescue.org/adoption-process  if interested.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.  If you are an approved adopter and are interested in this dog, please let your case worker know. Story
Lexie was rescued from a neglect case in Houston, TX. Someone had seen her walking with her “owner” down the street and stopped to ask about her because it was clear that she was not being cared for. She was extremely malnourished and was missing a lot of hair.    After talking with the owner, he was willing to surrender Lexie to the person who stopped to ask about her, so that she could be better cared for. The finder reached out to many local rescues and was unable to find anyone to take her in. She messaged SSR on Instagram and we of course knew we had to help Lexie.    Lexie arrived and is doing great. She is putting weight on and her coat is coming in beautifully. She loves her people and will roll over for belly rubs. She has a silly side and will make you laugh everyday.   She was with dogs in Texas and was fine as long as they ignored her and left her alone. She is not good with cats.  She is heartworm positive, but will be treated at SSR’s expense. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.  If you are an approved adopter and are interested in this dog, please let your case worker know. Story
Thor was rescued from a high kill shelter in Texas. Thor is an older gentleman that is used to getting what he wants and he needs continued structure and a strong leader present in his daily life to continue living out his Golden Years happily. Thor has lived in a foster home with other German Shepherds and settled in nicely with them after proper introductions. He seeks out affection and will approach you for petting, but be prepared because he will not want you to stop!  He has excellent house manners and he thoroughly enjoys his walks outside. He is also content relaxing on his orthopedic bed playing with his squeaky toys. Unfortunately, with Thor's unknown past and vetting history, his body is that of an old man. He was not able to tell his foster mom that his slower movements were more than just the typical senior daily aches and his oral medication was not bringing him much relief. Sadly, Thor started to react negatively towards his foster siblings (also rescues and seniors themselves) and was causing them additional stress, too. He then started to exhibit signs of resource guarding towards the foster and they were not equipped to handle his behavioral challenges. Thankfully, SSR has a partnership with an amazing trainer who accepted Thor into her program so he could become the perfect gentleman he was truly meant to be! Alas, if it were only that easy. Once Thor arrived at training, it became obvious with the professional training assessment that something medically was causing Thor to behave in this manner. This poor old guy was in a a lot of pain!! He was sore. He was grumpy. He was acting out.  Thor now receives Librela injections at the vet which has helped tremendously with his joint pain. Prior to those, it was difficult for him to just move around. He is also on joint supplements and oral medication to assist with additional pain. Thor is looking for a very special forever retirement home. No stairs for Thor- single story living is best for him. Also, no small children for Thor. He is HUGE and will use all 100 pounds and that large head of his and easily push little kids over. Thor is currently being fostered by our trainer in Nellysford, VA. Although he is no longer officially part of her training program (his old body cannot handle the daily rigors of training), he enjoys living in her home and getting out on the trail.  He is scheduled to be neutered and is currently on the slow-kill method for heartworm disease treatment. If he is adopted prior to the completion of treatment, SSR continues to pay for that. He currently eats Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach 7 + Salmon & Rice. Thor rides well in a car and was trained properly on using a ramp to make getting in and out of vehicles easy.  The  15/10 Foundation  has launched an initiative to encourage the adoptions of German Shepherds and German Shepherd mixes over the age of 5 years. Thor has been nominated and approved for adoption fee sponsorship. Story
CALLING  ALL  LUNA  LOVERS! Lovely Luna is almost 3 years old and is searching high and low for her forever family! She was used for breeding and had two litters of puppies by the time she was 2.  The owner gave her away after she served her purpose. She's had so much to learn after being locked in a kennel for so long.  She is with her MD foster family now and is quickly coming out of her shell.  She finally is discovering how fun life can be. Luna was initially terrified of humans, but she's getting better every day! Luna appreciates slow introductions to other dogs.  Once she warms up, lookout!  Luna plays wonderfully and sticks by her new fur friends.  Luna loves going for walks and is wonderful on her leash.  Luna gets along great with dog savvy cats as well as dogs big and small. She will even let you give her a mani/pedi!  Luna is 100% potty trained and is working on her crate manners. She would do well with a companion dog in the home.  Please no rambunctious kids as she still needs time to learn humans are not scary. Once Luna has healed from her spay, she will be ready for you to take her home!
