Story
Astro is not ashamed to look for attention or shower volunteers with affection whenever possible. He was found as a stray and since arriving he has made a few dog friends at the humane society. Sometimes he needs gentle guidance on when to take a break, because he's bigger than a lot of his puppy peers. He is confident and mildly assertive with other dogs, but can be overwhelmed and opt for submissiveness/shyness when there are too many new things people smells or sounds all at once. However, he quickly warms up and regains his confidence with small amounts of reinforcement and encouragement. We have limited information regarding his cat compatibility, but see no prey drive that would cause hesitation. He will likely thrive in any home that has adequate space for him to stretch his long legs. His energy levels are medium as a puppy and will likely taper off a little as he progresses towards adulthood. While we don't have flying cars, you can apply to adopt Astro to be part of your future family. All pets adopted from the Humane Society of Freeborn County will be spayed or neutered, up to date on age appropriate vaccinations, testing and will be microchipped. All of this is included in their adoption fee. Fill out an application to adopt at freeborncountyhs.org When transitioning your new pet home please allow for at least 4-6 weeks for your pet to adjust to their new home. They will need this time to decompress, and adjust to a new routine and environment. During that time we will provide check ins and counseling to ensure a successful transition. Please review all basic adoption requirements listed on our website before applying. We take finding the right homes for the animals in our care very seriously. They deserve nothing but the best! Please allow 2-7 days for applications to be processed. If an animal is listed in foster care, these pets are not at our facility, but are in foster care homes. They are still available for adoption, and meet and greets are done with pre-approved applicants only. If you have any questions feel free to send us an email at freeborncohumanesociety@gmail.com, send us a message on Facebook, or call or text 507-377-8501.

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.River came to MCHS on 9/30/2025 as a stray caught after running loose for a few days, held for the legal hold time, and never claimed. We are fairly certain of her original background as several puppies that looked like her were dumped by their owner near our shelter in February 2024. We eventually found out that those pups were born in late November 2023 to a Great Dane mix mother and bluetick coonhound father and that the entire litter was not abandoned. All of those puppies found homes and now River is still waiting for one after coming to the shelter as an adult. She has been vet checked, spayed, and microchipped, and her fee is $150. River certainly exemplifies many hound characteristics in both looks and behavior. Hounds and their mixes tend to be stubborn, fun loving, and ruled by their noses and the scents on the breeze. River is energetic, strong, and does like to push the boundaries. She's also extremely happy and loving. She will require a secure environment and a lot of exercise. At this time, we do think she'd do best as the only pet in the home, at least until she gets some good training and socialization. She definitely needs some basic training and would do best in a home without little kids, due to her size and somewhat clumsy nature. River will definitely be a loyal and happy companion for someone. She loves to give hugs. This gal has spent too much time at the shelter and is more than ready to head to a new home! NOTE:  Adoptions are done via private appointment once an application has been completed and approved. Applications must be submitted at our website, mchs.rescuegroups.org. We are located at 101 22nd St. SE in Austin, right next to the airport. It's exit 180B off of I-90, right off of 218 South. We do require that potential adopters be at least 21 years old and that any resident dogs be up to date on vaccinations, heartworm testing/preventatives, and spayed or neutered.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.September 17, 2026, 3:30 pm
