Story
Tall Titan, is a strong and remarkable  Warrior, a dog that has fought to be alive and walking  today on this earth.  He has willed himself to come from the depths of pain and starvation to become this handsome boy that you see right now.  He is our Super Hero Pup and our example of a creature that has never given up even when it would have been easier to just go to sleep and never wake up.  When Titan came to a rescue lady’s house that Critter Cavalry knows, this boy was malnourished and just a skeleton of the puppy he should be as a Great Dane.  The lady has a love for the Danes and she asked CCR to please take him into our rescue before she fell in love and couldn’t let him go.  She had enough dogs and just felt the temptation to keep him was too great.  We agreed and soon Titan was ours to raise and get prepped for a new home and family.  Shortly afterwards his foster family noticed he was struggling to walk and his joints were inflamed. Titan was taken to several vets before receiving the diagnosis of  Hypertrophic osteodystrophy (HOD). He has been put on a regimen of medications, high calorie food and hydrotherapy and is now running, jumping and playing with other dogs. His favorite things to do are play with toys, run and nap in the sun. Titan is a large dog and will do best in a home with another large dog or two that he will be able to play with. He will continue to need medication intermittently for some time and to be followed by a veterinarian.  If you have large breed dog experience and are willing to take on this fellas special needs please contact Critter Cavalry Rescue. He is not house trained to hold longer than 4 hours.  He needs to eat separately at mealtimes and he needs to learn better how to play with his toys in a group setting if there are other dogs.  If he is the only dog then there is no special monitoring.  Titan rides like a champ in the car or truck and he is definitely crate trained with good dog/name recall.  He would be easier to watch in the yard if you had a real physical fence installed since he likes to wander off out of curiosity.   Please email Critter Cavalry at ccrnewengland@gmail.com if you are interested.  He is great with young children/boys that are rough and tumble and lots of noise. PLEASE NOTE:  Our dogs are transported from Tennessee to meeting places in the states where we have posted.  Further information about us is given on our Adopt-A-Pet site.  The adoption fees vary and will be provided as well as noted on the application you receive.  Contact us at 615-661-5333 or ccrnewengland@gmail.comApril 16, 2024, 8:14 am

Story
Grams Needs Your Help Registration No.: RR097. It’s truly heart-wrenching to hear about Grams’ condition, but it’s also heartwarming to know that he’s now in a caring environment where he can begin to heal physically and emotionally. Gram is a scared but sweet boy, weighing 87 pounds and we think he is about 3 years old. It’s clear that he’s been through a lot, but with proper care and attention, he has a chance for a better life ahead. The pictures say more than words. The efforts of the shelter and his foster home are commendable. His foster mom is providing him with multiple small meals to prevent bloating, along with the patience and care to help him adjust to his new surroundings, are crucial steps in his recovery process. It sounds like Gram has endured significant neglect and possibly mistreatment in the past. His emaciated condition and the injuries described below indicate prolonged suffering and lack of proper care. The protruding bones suggest severe malnutrition. The cuts on his hind legs, along with the pressure sores, further indicate that he’s been subjected to conditions that are detrimental to his well-being, likely due to prolonged confinement in an inadequate environment. The rings around his tail are a common sign of being crated for long periods in a crate that’s too small, causing discomfort and injury. The chewed-up ears could indeed be from being tied up outside, especially if flies or other pests were present. Given his physical condition, it’s imperative that he receives prompt veterinary attention to address his sores and his paraphimosis which is an issue with his penis that can cause a constriction to the blood flow which can cause increased swelling and any other health concerns he may have. It’s also important to assess his emotional well-being and provide him with the support and comfort he needs to feel safe and secure. It’s essential that his new foster and eventual furever home continue to monitor his condition closely and provide him with the necessary support and medical care to ensure his recovery and eventual well-being. Grams deserves a chance at a better life, and with the right care and compassion, he can overcome his past traumas and thrive in a loving home. Gram is responding well to the care provided by his foster home. The fact that he’s eating, drinking, and able to relieve himself without complications is a positive sign of his resilience. Bonding with his foster family is a crucial step in Grams’ journey to recovery. Establishing trust and a sense of security will be essential for him to feel safe and comfortable in his new environment. The patience and compassion shown by his foster caregivers are invaluable in helping him adjust and heal from the trauma he’s experienced. It’s heartbreaking to imagine what Gram has been through. With proper medical attention, nutrition, and lots of love and patience, he has the potential to heal both physically and emotionally. Gram has a bright future ahead. He’s fortunate to have found a supportive foster home that is committed to his well-being, and I have no doubt that he’ll continue to make progress on his journey to recovery and eventual adoption into a loving furever home. MAGDRL adopts to eastern NY, eastern PA, NJ, DE, MD, VA and WV only. Please see our website www.magdrl.org for adoption procedures and fencing policies. Story
Registration No.: RR097. Atticus is a 22 month old neutered and pexied merle dane. He will be two years old in April 2024. His outlook on life and his energy level is still mostly PUPPY. (“Life is great! I love you; do you want to pet me? What’s that smell?! Obedience games with treats; I’m in! I’m bored on this walk, let’s play tug with this leash! Why aren’t you playing? No matter, I’ll play enough for both of us. Okay, I’ll nap now.”) His best qualities are probably his friendliness and his willingness to TRY to do what you want, especially if treats are involved. And his striking good looks, of course. He is good at the vet’s. He rides well in the backseat of the car, but if left momentarily he will peruse the front seat and be waiting for you in the drivers seat, with the rear view mirror adjusted. He is pretty good about leaving you alone while you are eating at the table, but would definitely eat any food left unattended, and counters are well within his reach. In his youth he ingested something he shouldn’t have and needed surgery to remove a blockage, so extra caution is needed to prevent a recurrence. Although his puppy energy is impressive and occasionally astounding, it is usually short lived. Ten minutes of zoomies in the yard with his toy, and he is willing to come in and snuggle into his bed and snooze. Maybe chew on a chew bone for awhile. Atticus has lived with other dogs in the past. Most recently with an older spayed pit bull. They were fine in the house together, although the pit bull mostly ignored or discouraged any attempts to play. They did not have a fenced area, so did not have free play outside. We were told that Atticus did like running and chasing with a border collie at a previous home. Atticus is now living alone. The foster home has an older female dog that does not want any roommates. He essentially lives in a separate apartment. Foster mom spends several hours a day with Atticus. Just hanging out and watching TV or reading, helping mom during zoom yoga class (!), practicing obedience games, going for car rides, and walking in different areas, like Home Depot, city parks, and small town sidewalks. He gets free run playtime in a large fenced yard when it’s not too muddy. He loves running in the snow and eating the snow. Foster mom doesn’t allow too much snow eating, pretty sure that’s not good. Atticus is usually walked on a front attach harness, but he is strong and sometimes will pull. He gets very excited when he sees other dogs. If they bark he will definitely bark back, and louder. Foster mom has gone to two obedience classes with him, and he was able to be in a room with six other dogs and people and still pay attention most of the time. Not all of the time; he still needs work on this. He has a boisterous personality and although he has been fine with other dogs in the past, he has not interacted with other dogs while at his foster home. We were told that while he was at his previous home he met some other Danes; one was fine and two were not compatible. Atticus would do well in a home where people are home most of the time. He would like a large fenced yard to do zoomies in. A compatible dog friend might be nice, but having just his people would be fine. Probably no cats due to a fairly strong prey drive, and no young children (12+ yrs) who might be bowled over, or who might have toys that Atticus would want to eat. Patience and consistent training to adapt to a new situation will be key. As foster mom, I thought I would never be able to walk him on a leash; he’s gotten better. At first he was unruly in the car, now he is calm. I didn’t think I would be able to do yoga with him in the room, but I can; he only visits my mat a couple times, I tell him to go lay down and he does. He still wants to greet, sniff or lick every person we walk by, but I’m seeing improvement. Our biggest challenge at the moment is to be capable of remaining calm and polite when other dogs are around. We’re continuing to work on that. MAGDRL adopts to eastern NY, eastern PA, NJ, DE, MD, WV and VA only. Please visit our website (www.magdrl.org) to review our adoption procedures and fencing policies.
