Story
Axel’s Ready for His Forever Meet Axel, our 2-year-old husky mix with a heart full of hope and paws made for adventure. He’s spent most of his young life without a true place to call home—but that changes now. Axel is: Dog-friendly and loves a good play session Smart, trainable, and eager to learn (free training included thanks to the Pedigree Foundation!) House-trained and respectful indoors ‍&#226&#153&#130&#239&#184&#143 A climber and escape artist—classic husky energy! He’ll need a secure yard and someone who appreciates his zest for life. He’s not just looking for a home—he’s looking for a teammate. Someone who sees his potential, embraces his quirks, and gives him the stability he’s never had. If you’ve got a husky-proof fence and a heart ready to love, Axel’s waiting. Let’s give this boy the fresh start he deserves. Www.barktownrescue.org/adopt   AXEL'S ADOPTION FEE IS $175The shelter software system requires that we choose a predominant breed or breed mix for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable so for most of our dogs we are only guessing at the dog's predominant breed or breed mix. We strongly encourage you to select your new pet by looking at each dog's individual personality and pet qualities rather than relying on a breed label that is only our best guess.    Our adoption fees vary from $150 and up.  All of our dogs are up to date on vaccines, heart worm preventives, and flea/tick medication, and will be spayed/neutered prior to adoption. Portions of your adoption fee also help care for the sick and injured animals that we take in.  Thank you for supporting us and considering a rescue dog!    September 17, 2025, 8:51 pm

Story
Meet Teva — Your Future Adventure Buddy! Teva is a beautiful 44-pound, 1-year-old Husky mix currently being fostered through Oldham County Humane Society, and she’s ready to find a home that understands her gentle heart. Teva can be cautious with new people and is a bit hand-shy at first. She likely had a rough start in life, so she needs a little time to feel safe. But once she warms up, she completely transforms—playful, affectionate, and eager to be your best friend. This girl LOVES to play. Chase a ball, toss a frisbee, or throw just about anything, and she’ll happily run after it with that classic Husky enthusiasm. She’s joyful, athletic, and so fun to be around once she trusts you. Teva would thrive in a home with another friendly dog she can play with, though she can absolutely learn to be an only dog as long as she has plenty of chew items, enrichment, and playtime. She also does well with cats! Given her shy nature and need for slow introductions, Teva would do best in an adults-only home where things are a bit more predictable. To support her successful transition, WMK9 – Well-Mannered K9 is offering a free in-home private lesson for her future adopter. This session will help you understand Teva’s personality, build trust, and set her up to thrive in her new home. If you’re willing to go slow, give her space to adjust, and let her come out of her shell on her timeline, Teva will reward you with loyalty, laughter, and unconditional love. She’s truly a special dog—she just needs the right person to see it.

Story
Meet Bolt! Bolt is a 7-year-old, medium-sized Husky mix who’s been described by those who know him best as an absolute hoot! He may have a little life experience under his belt, but don’t let that fool you — he still loves his daily walks, taking in all the sniffs, and proudly performing his “dog duties.” Bolt is a social guy who enjoys meeting new people and will happily join you for a stroll or a quick romp in the yard. Afterwards, he’s more than content to kick back and relax by your side — quality time with his favorite human is his favorite reward. This smart, loyal boy is a proud graduate of the Paws Behind Bars training program, where he learned how to be the best companion he can be and discovered how much he loves pleasing his person. He’s fully potty trained, crate trained, rides like a champ in the car, and simply enjoys being part of whatever’s going on. Bolt gets along with other dogs when introduced properly, though he’s more of a “hangout buddy” than a playmate. However, he’s not a fan of cats or small animals, so a feline-free home is best for him. If you’re looking for a loyal, laid-back companion with a touch of Husky humor, Bolt just might be your perfect match. Our adoption process begins with submitting an application online.
