Meet Emmie — a 7-year-old Husky/German Shepherd mix with a heart as big as her smile.Emmie came to us after her owner had to move in with family, and the resident dog in the home wasn't getting along with her. The family told us, "Emmie is perfect — she definitely wasn't the problem," and after just five minutes with her, you'll understand exactly what they meant.Emmie has done wonderfully with every person she's met. She's gentle, patient, and truly enjoys being part of a family. At this time, Emmie is looking for a quiet, low-stress home with no kids, no dogs, and no cats. Shelter life has pushed her stress to the max, and we've seen her become more irritable and less tolerant of fast movements, being grabbed quickly, or being told what to do.It's important to note that this is something we've only started seeing after Emmie has spent so much time in the shelter environment. The constant stress and lack of stability have been incredibly hard on her, and we're hopeful that once she's able to decompress in a home setting, these behaviors will improve or disappear altogether. Right now, she simply needs a calm environment where she can feel safe, secure, and not overwhelmed.One thing Emmie is struggling with here at the shelter is eating. Like many animals who come from loving homes, the sudden change has been hard on her. Her previous family tried everything to make the situation work before making the heartbreaking decision to surrender her, and Emmie is feeling that loss too. We've tried countless foods and tricks to help her settle in, but nothing has fully stuck yet. What she does love is human food — she's a girl with taste.If you're someone who enjoys cooking, understands sensitive dogs, and has room in your heart for a companion who desperately wants to feel secure again, Emmie is waiting for you. She's one of those dogs who is simply too good to be anywhere but in a home where she's truly loved.Even if you're not in a position to adopt, we'd love to talk with you about fostering. At approximately 1 year old and around 45 lbs, Kai is happiest curled up on the couch beside his people, watching TV, relaxing, and soaking up as much love and affection as he can possibly get. He can be a little shy when he first meets you, but he comes out of his shell quickly. Once he does, be prepared for a loyal little shadow who wants nothing more than to be by your side. Kai LOVES affection from humans and will happily cuddle with you for days. He even loves sleeping with his people and will absolutely claim the entire bed if you let him! And his favorite sleeping position? On his back, legs straight up in the air, like he just doesn't care. 🎶 Kai is: 🐶 Great with other dogs 👧 Wonderful with kids 🏡 Crate trained and house trained ❤️ Extremely affectionate and loyal 🛋️ A serious couch potato 🐾 Curious and eager to explore 🚶 A big fan of walks and going out to see the world 🎾 Happy to run around the yard and play when the mood strikes Kai would be perfectly happy as your one and only, but he also gets along wonderfully with other dogs. Kai's Story Kai and his brother were surrendered by their owners to a kill shelter in South Texas simply because their owners no longer wanted them. Sadly, owner-surrendered dogs are often at especially high risk because they don't have a hold period. Kai was scheduled to be euthanized at 4:30 PM the very next day because the shelter was out of space. We saw his post at approximately 2:30 PM the day before and immediately scrambled to save him. The following day, the shelter couldn't tell us whether Kai was still alive. A volunteer jumped in the car and drove to the shelter as quickly as possible—and thankfully, Kai was still there. He was only minutes away from losing his life. Thanks to an incredible team of people who refused to let that happen, Kai is now safe and looking for the forever family he was always meant to have. ❤️ Kai is currently around 45 lbs and could benefit from putting on a little more weight. His Perfect Home Kai is looking for a medium-active family who understands that he has two speeds: let's go explore! and please let me sleep on the couch. He enjoys walks, exploring, running around the yard, and playing, but he is equally happy to spend the rest of the day relaxing beside his people. More than anything, Kai wants to be loved. The whole little family was in danger. As we scrambled to rescue them, the shelter adopted out the puppies. But fate had other plans: just as Pedro and Zoe were being loaded up for their freedom ride, their daughter was being returned to the shelter. We couldn’t leave her behind. Tilly has only known the backyard breeder and shelter system. She arrived at our NC sanctuary unsure of humans, unsure of safety, unsure of herself. But with the help of her pack and a patient foster mom, she’s learning to trust. She now approaches for gentle pets and eagerly accepts treats—small victories that feel monumental. Tilly is a tall, lanky girl like her dad Pedro, and we estimate she’ll grow to around 70 lbs. She’ll likely always be a bit shy, so she’s looking for a calm, predictable home with confident, patient, playful dogs who can show her the ropes. She LOVES to play with other dogs. A securely fenced backyard would be ideal, giving her space to explore at her own pace. She may be timid with strangers at first, but once she feels safe, her quiet sweetness shines through. Tilly’s story is one of resilience, and she’s ready for the next chapter—with a family who sees her not just for where she’s been, but for the gentle soul she’s becoming. Tilly is 7 months old now. Shelter staff initially believed the girls didn’t get along, but once they were safely out and able to decompress, their true relationship became clear. Athena, estimated around 3 years old, and Iris, just a year, are deeply bonded — likely a mother–daughter pair who relied on each other through instability. What began as two misunderstood dogs has revealed itself to be a sweet, protective duo who have only grown closer in foster care. Their dynamic fits perfectly — Athena leads with calm confidence, and Iris follows with trust and devotion. They enjoy the company of other dogs and will happily play, but always with each other close by. If another dog tries to pick on one, the other steps in without hesitation. Their bond is deep, protective, and incredibly sweet to witness. We'd like to find them a home together.
