MEET RUJI Name: Ruji Age: 4 years old Gender: Female (Spayed) Breed: Spitz Mix Colour: Black / Brown / White Weight: 7.9 kg (17.4 lbs) Height: 40 cm (15.7 in) at the shoulder Her Story Ruji was rescued from a municipal shelter in December 2022. She then spent time at a private shelter before eventually coming to the AKR Center. During her medical examination, Ruji was diagnosed with patellar luxation and underwent corrective surgery. With People Ruji can be a little shy when meeting someone new, but treats are a quick way to her heart. She will take treats from new people and usually warms up fairly quickly, allowing gentle touch and affection. Having spent most of her life in a shelter environment since she was young, Ruji simply hasn’t had many opportunities to learn how to confidently approach people and ask for attention. She genuinely likes people and is very affectionate once she feels comfortable — she just tends to express it in a quiet, gentle way. Once she trusts you, she’ll even roll over and show you her belly. She can also be picked up comfortably with an arm supporting her under the belly. With Other Dogs Ruji is friendly and gets along very well with other dogs. She will approach both familiar and unfamiliar dogs to say hello and show interest in playing. Much like she is with people, Ruji sometimes seems unsure of exactly how to express that interest. She may hover nearby, watch the other dog’s reaction, and gradually approach once she feels that her attention is welcome. She has lived peacefully among other dogs and has shown no issues or conflicts with them. With Cats Ruji’s reaction to cats has not yet been observed, but a cat test can be arranged if needed. Energy Level Ruji has a low energy level and is naturally calm and easygoing. She is perfectly happy relaxing quietly and spending much of her day resting. Walks Ruji walks comfortably in quieter areas. Busy roads with lots of traffic can still make her nervous, so she is currently working on becoming more comfortable around them. She also loves using her nose! Rather than walking continuously, she tends to stop frequently to sniff and explore her surroundings. For Ruji, walks are less about covering distance and more about taking her time and experiencing all the interesting smells along the way. At Home Ruji has no food guarding issues with either people or other dogs and rarely barks. She remains calm when placed in a kennel and is currently comfortable using both indoor pee pads and going outside for potty breaks. The Home Ruji Is Looking For Ruji is a gentle, quiet girl who has spent much of her life in shelter environments. She may not immediately rush up asking for affection, but underneath that initial shyness is a sweet dog who genuinely enjoys both people and other dogs. She would do best with someone who understands that confidence doesn’t always happen overnight and is happy to let her approach new people, places, and experiences at her own pace. Meet Charlotte • Name: Charlotte • Age: 7–8 years • Sex: Spayed Female • Breed: Terrier Mix • Color: Brown • Weight: 9.5 kg • Height (shoulder): 37 cm Rescue Story Charlotte was rescued from a municipal shelter in January 2021. After her rescue, she spent about four years in a private shelter. During her time at the shelter, Charlotte was bitten by another dog. Following that experience, she became very sensitive to handling and touch, which made finding an adoptive home more challenging. In November, Charlotte joined the AKR center, where she began desensitization and touch training. At first, even putting on a collar or harness caused her to scream, but with consistent training and patience, she has made meaningful progress. Now, she may occasionally whine slightly, but her reaction has improved significantly. She is sensitive to her fur being pulled, so she is currently kept with a short coat for her comfort. ‍‍‍ Socialization with People Charlotte can be a little shy at first, but she is very food-motivated. With treats and gentle, positive reinforcement, she warms up quickly and becomes comfortable with touch. She has not been tested with children under 13. While she can be picked up once she trusts you, this may be difficult for strangers at first. As she bonds, she becomes affectionate—even offering her belly for rubs. Socialization with Dogs Charlotte is friendly and social with other dogs. She approaches both familiar and unfamiliar dogs to greet and invite play. She can be a bit vocal when playing, which may overwhelm more timid dogs. However, she does very well with dogs that match her energy level, regardless of size. She would thrive either with a compatible canine companion or as the only dog in the home. Cats Not yet tested, but can be assessed upon request. Energy Level Moderate energy. She enjoys outdoor activities but settles down calmly afterward. Walks Charlotte may look around curiously during walks, but she follows her handler well and does not pull on the leash. Other Notes • No resource guarding toward people or dogs • No separation anxiety—she stays home alone well • May bark at other dogs, but does not bark excessively at people • Calm and quiet in a kennel • Nervous about getting into the car—may need to be gently carried in (a crate is recommended initially) • Currently uses outdoor potty Ideal Home Charlotte is looking for a patient and understanding home that will continue her positive reinforcement training and respect her sensitivity to touch. My name is Lucas, and I’m a 4-year-old male Jack Russell Terrier × Welsh mix weighing around 10kg. I have a compact, sturdy body — but my short little legs are what everyone notices first. People often say I look extra adorable when I walk, and I think it’s because every step I take naturally makes people smile. 😊 For a long time, I lived in a shelter. I was rescued just before euthanasia, and since then I’ve been given a second chance at life. Now I’m staying in a training facility where I’m slowly learning what the world is like outside the shelter. Everything still feels new to me — other dogs playing freely, interesting smells on walks, toys, and especially kind human attention. It’s almost like I’m finally experiencing what it means to just be a dog. Because I’m discovering so much for the first time, I get very curious about everything around me. But there are also things I still need help understanding. Sometimes, if a hand suddenly reaches over my head or someone touches me unexpectedly, I can get scared and react defensively. In those moments, it may look like I’m trying to bite, but it’s really just fear — a way for me to protect myself when I feel unsure. When people take time to approach me gently, that behavior becomes much less, and my true personality starts to show. Because deep down… I’m actually a very sweet and affectionate boy. 💛 I just need time. What I need most is not quick bonding, but patience and understanding. If you let me come to you at my own pace instead of forcing touch or rushing interactions, I will slowly begin to trust you. It helps a lot when people approach me from the side or below rather than reaching over my head, and when they use calm voices and positive experiences to help me feel safe. Once I trust someone, I become a completely different dog — I love attention, I follow my person around, and I show a very affectionate and playful side. I also need time to adjust because I haven’t really experienced normal home life before. A house, daily routines, leash walking in neighborhoods, being alone for short periods, and house training — all of these are still new to me. At first, I may feel nervous or make mistakes, but that’s not bad behavior. It’s just me learning how to live in a home. What helps me grow is guidance, not punishment. With a stable routine, regular walks, and positive reinforcement, I can gradually build confidence and feel more secure. I’m smart and curious, and with the right support, I learn step by step at my own pace. In the beginning, it’s really important for me to have a calm environment and not too much overwhelming stimulation. If I’m given space and time to feel safe, I will slowly open my heart. And when I do, I will stay by your side with all my loyalty and love. I may not be the easiest dog at first, but I promise I have a heart that is ready to love deeply once I feel safe.
