Meet Lyric, a female maltese mix. Lyric arrived to the Shelter as part of a trio of seemingly unrelated dogs – 1 pug, 1 frenchie and 1 maltese. We are not sure of their relation to each other but there was some squabbling over resources (bed, food, etc) so staff decided to kennel them separately. Lyric has been soft and easy to handle one on one with staff and volunteers. She may enjoy a home with a well matched resident dog. Any dogs should meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. We do not have any history of Lyric with children or other animals.The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw!Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

This sweet little guy loves his people and is happiest when he can be close to his human. If you’re looking for a loyal little companion who wants to be by your side, Ricky may be your perfect match. Ricky is an affectionate, lovable boy who is a pleasure to care for. Like many small dogs, he can get a little excited at times, but he is easy to calm down and responds well to gentle reassurance. He is also learning how to stay calm and comfortable around other dogs and will benefit from continued patience and positive guidance as he builds confidence. Ricky can occasionally be a little protective of his things, so his adopter should be mindful of his tendency to resource guard and continue working with him using positive, reward-based training. He also has occasional accidents in the house, although he seems to understand that the yard is the place to do his business and is making progress with his house manners. Most of all, Ricky is simply a very sweet, loving little guy who wants what most dogs want: to be loved, cared for, and close to his person. He has so much affection to give and would love to find someone who will appreciate his gentle, endearing personality while helping him continue to learn and grow. Murphy was my mother-in-law's dog. He was a rescue dog that she acquired almost 12 years ago. We are uncertain how old he was at the time she adopted him, but we believe he was under 3 years old. My mother-in-law is bedridden on hospice and we had to remove him from her home because he was guarding her and biting caregivers. He has been living at our home for the last six months and we have two dogs that he does not get along with. We can no longer keep him in our home and are looking for someone to take him in immediately. He needs a home with no other dogs or children. Murphy would do best with a single person or couple who lives a quiet life that has room for lots of love and attention for him. Murphy is quirky and would be happy to find a home where he can cuddle up and live out the rest of his life.

Ozzy is an 8-month-old Maltese Terrier mix who came from a neighboring family. I took him in to provide a safe and loving environment while finding him the right permanent home. He is playful, affectionate, curious, energetic, and loves being around people. Ozzy is potty trained to go outside, neutered, and attends PetSmart Doggy Day Camp, where he does well around other dogs. He is still very much a puppy and is in his chewing stage—he loves chew toys and can tear his toys up, so he needs supervision and redirection. He can also get excited and bark at dogs or cats while on walks. I’m looking for a loving, responsible home that will give him exercise, attention, structure, continued training, and plenty of patience as he grows.
