Story
If soft-hearted sweetness and childlike wonderfilled goodness is what you are looking for in a dog than it is a pleasure to introduce you to Odie! This boy is 79lbs of gentle, tiger-striped, brindle goodness with a side of accidental ladies man. There wasn’t a woman who has met this boy that hasn’t become immediately smitten with him and it is easy to understand why.
Want to watch this soft-hearted giant in action? Head to YouTube and search “Odie | Gentle Giant, Soft Heart” and then come right back to read more!
Odie is estimated to be around 1–2 years old and weighs a perfect 79 lbs. We suspect he may be a Mastiff/Hound mix, but as always, rescue rules apply and breed and birthday are our best guess. What isn’t a guess is that he is a LOVE. The kind that starts quiet and grows deep. When we first met Odie, he was in a new place and he was a bit shy. Not reactive. Not dramatic. Just taking it slow. He needed a little warming up before he felt comfortable. But once he did? Completely different dog. He was happily greeting every new person who approached, soaking up affection, and laying his full weight across us for hugs and kisses. Odie doesn’t do half-hearted bonding. He commits 1000%!
With other dogs, he’s thoughtful and very much in his own lane. On leash, his greetings are quiet and polite. Odie is fostered in a loving home with a wide variety of other dogs and he is wonderful with them all! From small pups to dogs bigger than him. This combination of experiences has helped create a dog that is both calm and confident, can go from gently playing with a small dog or puppy to bouncing around the big dogs followed by lounging in the shade or rolling in a cool spot of dirt. He doesn’t need constant action either, he is perfectly content to wander around and exist peacefully on his own, it’s very classic mastiff energy even if we cannot guarantee breed. He was especially happy to meet Pinecone, an itty-bitty Chihuahua and seemed to genuinely enjoy her presence, so we wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up being the Arnold Schwarzenegger to a small-dog Danny DeVito. With our house cat, he showed respectful avoidance. When the cat got too close, Odie simply created space. Later, when Biggie entered the room, Odie didn’t even get up from the couch. That’s promising coexist energy, though we are happy to set up a Kitty-Committee Sleepover to confirm.
Now let’s talk about the one area where Odie needs a little coaching, leash skills. His approach on leash is very chill and a sense of urgency is not his vibe, it isnt stubbornness, but he will need patient guidance and some consistent training to learn the rhythm of walking on leash, including the occasional pull to pick-up the pace. Once that’s ironed out, he’s going to be an easy, low-energy companion.
Overall, Odie is a quiet, lower-energy boy in a big body. He isn’t looking to run marathons. He’s looking for steady people, soft encouragement, and a couch sturdy enough for full-body leaning and long naps. Apartment living could absolutely work for him once his leash skills are polished. His size may be large, but his presence is gentle and calm
If you have room in your home and heart for a sensitive giant who bonds deeply and loves fully, Odie B. Love Bug is ready to come home to you!
