Story
Shor is a very sweet puppy mill rescue - he arrived shy and quiet, with no training, but has blossomed beautifully. He walks well on a leash, is house trained, and likes to snooze, eat, and play with puzzle toys. He is also up to date on vaccines and has a clean bill of health from a recent vet appt. He could do great in a house with another calm, well-trained dog who can show him the ropes and build his confidence, as well as a solo dog in a relaxing home where someone is around throughout the day. I am so sad to let him go but would love to find a new local home for him and would be available to dogsit/care for him at any time.

Please read the bio in full for answers to your questions. In the event you have a question that is not covered in the bio, please email info@seniordoghaven.org. If interested in adopting, please complete an adoption application which can be found at https://seniordoghaven.org/adoption-process/. Please note that because all our dogs live in foster homes, we are unable to set up meetings with a dog unless we have a completed adoption application on file. Adoptions must be about within a reasonable commute from Wilmington, DE for our volunteers to be able to conduct an in-person home visit Meet Blackberry! Blackberry is a 10-year-old, 10 lb mini Poodle mix who was surrendered by his owner. He had been sadly neglected and it was time for a new beginning. Blackberry was brought into our care and immediately received a sedated shave and was neutered. It was discovered that one of his eyes was missing, and the other one was so damaged, it had to be removed. Although Blackberry is deaf as well as blind, he doesn’t miss a trick. This amazing pup can wake from a sound sleep, sniff his way across the room, and jump on the sofa to find his foster mom eating cereal without him! Blackberry is very close to being housebroken. He will wear diapers, but only if he needs to be alone for several hours. When he is kept on a schedule, he remains accident free! Blackberry can’t do stairs, but very quickly learned where the front door is and how to step down out of the house. Blackberry doesn’t require any monthly prescription medications but will take Trazadone on occasion when he needs to be alone for several hours to avoid separation anxiety. Due to being both blind and deaf, he would be happiest to have an owner who is home most of the time. He likes to know his people are near and will cry out if he feels lost. Blackberry gets along well with other dogs but doesn’t like cats. He would do best in an adult-only home or one with dog savvy children that are aware of his special needs. Blackberry walks on a leash but tends to criss cross and would be happier with a fenced-in yard. Blackberry is a super sweet pup who enjoys greeting people. He loves to have his belly rubbed, get picked up, and enjoys lots of cuddles. He happily sleeps in bed with his foster mom and is a certified couch potato. If you need an adorable, furry friend to keep you company and make you smile, please apply today!!

Story
I am writing to you with a heavy heart regarding my beloved poodle, Jia, who is 11 years old and has been diagnosed with diabetes. Due to unforeseen financial difficulties and personal circumstances, I am no longer able to provide the care that Jia needs and deserves. Jia has been a cherished member of my family, bringing joy and companionship into my life. However, managing her diabetes has become increasingly challenging for me, both emotionally and financially. I want nothing but the best for her, and it is with great sadness that I must consider surrendering her to an organization that can provide the proper care and support. I am reaching out in hopes that you can assist in finding a suitable home for Jia. I am committed to ensuring that she is placed in a loving environment where she can receive the necessary medical care and attention. I am more than willing to provide any medical records and info

Story
Piper is being fostered in PA. Piper is a gentle and quiet little guy who is fairly new to his foster home (January 2025). He can be found napping and usually changes beds so he makes it like a game of hide and seek to check on him. Piper is a bit skittish as far as being handled, especially with his head and face. He seems as though he's not been cuddled in a long time or else he is very timid in his new setting away from his original owner. He will take some time to learn to trust people and not pull away. If he is not being held, he does enjoy pets and scratches on his head and body, just not when being held. He is very good at finding his way around his foster home and will investigate or will follow his foster mom when it's meal time. There are also times he needs to be awakened from a deep sleep to eat. Piper is still adjusting to his new life. The first few days he would need his bedding changed about every 12 hours because he would mess in it but that has decreased to a very occasional poo on his bla

Story
Silverado is being fostered in PA. I am a silver mini poodle that was born on 11/9/2024. I was born blind, but I do not know that. I go by the name of River because I go with the flow of life. Being blind has not stopped me from playing, running in the backyard, and learning how to go up and down stairs. Toys, did someone say toys? "I love toys!" I love everyone I meet, 4-legged and 2-legged, with a wagging wiggly butt. Snuggling is one of my favorite things to do, on laps, on the couch..... well just about anywhere. I would do well in a home with a confident, gentle dog that can help me adjust to my furever home. Older children will be ok but little kids will scare me. I sleep in my crate at night. I am quiet for 6-8 hours then I need to go out to pee and pooh. Then I go right back into my crate and sleep till my Foster Mom says it is time to get up and play with my foster sister. I have a gorgeous coat that will require regular grooming. I do not mind being left alone as long as I am safely in my crate. I am a quiet guy. I only have accidents when my Foster Mom is busy and not paying attention to me. "Hey, I am standing by the backdoor. Got to go out.” I am also working on walking on a leash. It is a work in progress. I am UTD on all vaccines. So, I am ready to find my furever home. I promise to love you with all my heart. So, if I sound like you could love me forever, please apply to adopt me. BDRA has voted against the use of electrical fencing effective immediately.

Story
Matthew might just be the happiest dog you will ever meet. He has loved everyone he has met (so far that has consisted of adults and dogs). Likely good with kids, but he may knock down small ones. Likely poodle mixed with something, our guess is maybe Wheaton terrier, super sweet, smart but will need training. Mostly housebroken if taken outside frequently, will need an outlet for his lots of energy-either a fenced yard, lots and lots of walking or jogging, or another playful dog. He is just adorable. PLEASE NOTE- AN APPLICATION FROM THE WEBSITE ALMOSTHOMEDOGS.ORG IS REQUIRED prior to any meet and greet. Calling, emailing and using the “contact us” link is not useful and will delay your consideration in the adoption of the dog. The adoption fee is $450, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including age appropriate vaccinations, worming, flea/tick preventative and spay/neuter. All of our dogs will be microchipped. Because our dogs are in foster homes, applications are required prior to setting up any appointments. Calling or emailing may delay your consideration. APPLY AT ALMOSTHOMEDOGS.ORG (click on the word "Adopt" at top of page to find the dropdown menu with application) We are a non profit no kill 501 (c)3 rescue. Please understand that we do our best to describe our dogs but often we rescue them with virtually no information about them and often our best educated guess can be challenging. Currently check, cash or venmo is preferred payment
