Story
Zeke came to the Haven from a home where he was a beloved family member. Unfortunately, his family could no longer care for him, so this distinguished gentleman is looking for a new place to call home. The good news? Zeke already knows exactly how to be a wonderful companion and exactly how much he deserves to be adored.
At 14 years old and just under 20 pounds, Zeke is a sweet, loyal boy who loves the simple things in life: gentle walks, soft beds, tasty treats, grass under his paws, and spending time with his people. He's basically housetrained but benefits from potty pads and belly bands, just in case. He rides well in the car, sleeps through the night, and has excellent house manners.
Zeke enjoys leisurely neighborhood walks and will happily trot along like a little pony when he's in a good mood. He loves chasing and barking at squirrels, rolling in the grass, and has even discovered the joys of a low-key game of fetch. He is also an accomplished "furniture surfer" and likes rubbing his face and back along the furniture when the mood strikes. Butt scratches, gentle massages, and meals served promptly are also high on his list of priorities.
Affection is definitely Zeke's love language. He adores being near his favorite humans and will do adorable "happy hops" and little piglet-like grunts when he's excited for attention. He's not much of a lap dog and would prefer not to be picked up or asked to cuddle on the couch or bed. Instead, give him a comfy dog bed in the same room as you and he'll happily settle in as your devoted little shadow.
Zeke has lived successfully with cats and calm dogs and has done well with older children. He prefers a peaceful, predictable home without young kids, loud noises, or a lot of chaos. He has significant separation anxiety and will bark when left alone, so he'd do best with a retiree, remote worker, or someone who is home most of the time. Because of the barking, apartment living probably isn't the best fit. A fenced yard where he can wander through the grass at his own pace would be a huge bonus.
Like many senior dogs, Zeke has a few medical needs. He has a sensitive stomach and some hearing loss, and he was recently diagnosed with Cushing's disease. He takes daily medication for his Cushing's and stomach support, with Pepcid as needed, and is a good sport about taking his meds. He can still navigate stairs and enjoys his familiar daily routines.
Above all, Zeke's foster describes him as one of the gentlest dogs you'll ever meet. If you're looking for a calm, polite, wonderfully quirky little shadow who will happily spend his golden years by your side, come meet Zeke.
