Story
Age: 8 months Weight: ~80 pounds Dog friendly: Yes Cat friendly: Unknown Kid friendly: Yes Potty trained: Yes, good on a schedule Crate trained: Yes Inkling is an 8-month-old female Newfoundland with a story that perfectly reflects her name—she is a little spark of hope, resilience, and possibility. When Inkling first arrived at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center, her future looked uncertain. She was originally presented for what was believed to be a severe left shoulder growth plate (Salter-Harris) fracture. After discussing the extent of treatment required and the long-term prognosis, her previous owner elected euthanasia. Fortunately, Healing Hearts Rescue, working alongside the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center, stepped in and offered Inkling a second chance. Inkling underwent orthopedic surgery that same day. She handled anesthesia and surgery beautifully and quickly won over everyone involved in her care with her sweet, gentle personality. Like many Newfoundlands, Inkling is affectionate, kind-hearted, and happiest when she is surrounded by those she loves. She absolutely adores other dogs and would thrive in a home with a canine companion. Whether it's playing, cuddling, or simply following another dog around the house, Inkling lights up around her four-legged friends. She is equally enamored with people. Inkling has never met a stranger and greets everyone she encounters with a wagging tail and a gentle disposition. She has done wonderfully with adults and children alike and embodies the patient, loving temperament that makes Newfoundlands such treasured family dogs. Inkling thinks water is one of life’s greatest joys and would happily go swimming in her water bowl if given the opportunity. Unfortunately, Inkling's recovery has been far more medically complicated than anyone anticipated, and will need ongoing medical care. She will need adopters as special and caring as she is! **Medical History and Disclosures** Inkling is being adopted with several known pre-existing medical conditions that her future family must be prepared to manage. Left Shoulder Orthopedic Disease Inkling initially underwent surgical stabilization of what was believed to be a left shoulder fracture. During follow-up evaluations, repeat imaging suggested that the original lesion may not have been a fracture at all and may instead represent osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the shoulder. At the time of surgery, a pin and screw were placed in the humerus. The pin subsequently migrated and has since been removed. The screw remains in place and is currently serving a function. However, if the screw migrates in the future or begins causing pain, lameness, joint irritation, or damage to surrounding structures, it may also require surgical removal. Because of the abnormal shoulder development, the retained screw, and ongoing concerns regarding OCD, additional orthopedic surgery may be recommended in the future, particularly once she reaches skeletal maturity. Potential adopters should understand that continued orthopedic monitoring and future surgical intervention may be necessary as Inkling grows. Left Stifle (Knee) Disease Several weeks after surgery, Inkling developed significant left hind limb lameness associated with marked swelling of the knee joint. She was diagnosed with septic arthritis (joint infection) and treated with antibiotics. Her lameness improved dramatically with treatment, but persistent joint effusion remains despite resolution of the infection. The orthopedic surgery team is concerned that the previous infection may have weakened her cranial cruciate ligament, potentially resulting in a partial or complete cruciate ligament injury. At this time, she is using the limb well and remains comfortable, but future surgery may become necessary if instability or lameness progresses. Right Eye Entropion Inkling has entropion of the right eye, a condition in which the eyelid rolls inward and causes the eyelashes to rub against the surface of the eye. This condition requires surgical correction and will need to be addressed by her future family. Future Orthopedic Monitoring Because Inkling is still growing and has a complicated orthopedic history, ongoing monitoring by a veterinarian—and likely by a veterinary orthopedic surgeon—is strongly recommended. Additional diagnostics, rechecks, medications, rehabilitation, implant removal, grooming maintenance, and/or future surgeries may be necessary as she matures. Adoption fee: $595

Story
At 12 years young, Olaf is a big-hearted Lab/Newfoundland mix with an even bigger love for people! After spending 9 years with his previous family, Olaf is ready to spend his golden years surrounded by love, comfort, and plenty of pets. He's house-trained and crate-trained, making for an excellent roommate. This cuddle buddy is happy to remind you with a small (but surprisingly high-pitched) bark to remind you that petting him is, in fact, your full-time job. He cannot live in a home with shared walls (no apartments/townhomes) due to his noise level.Olaf has done well meeting other dogs and currently lives with multiple cats, mostly ignoring them. He also loves human kids too. He has been great at adjusting to the new routine, especially with so many new creatures at his foster home.At 80 lbs, Olaf is on a weight management plan and takes glucosamine to support his joints. He also has possible arthritis care down the road and a fatty mass that isn’t currently causing issues. Regular grooming will be important to keep him feeling his best too.Olaf has low- to medium-energy, but his future family should prioritize exercise in order to lose weight. He will not need a fenced yard for exercise but his recall isn't the best.Olaf is looking for a loving, patient home where someone is around often to keep him company and continue helping him settle in. He’d do great with someone who appreciates a slower pace, enjoys companionship, and doesn’t mind a little extra “conversation.”If you’ve got room on your couch and in your heart, Grandpa Olaf is waiting for you!If you are interested in Grandpa Olaf, fill out an application at this link to get the ball rolling - https://pethavenmn.org/adopt/adoptable-dogs/dog-adoption-application/The adoption fee is $250. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, heartworm/Lyme test, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and Bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchip implant (including registration). Adoption fees INCLUDE a mandatory sales tax of 7.525%. Age and breed are based on veterinarian and intake professional’s recommendation and not guaranteed as a rescue animal’s history is often unknown. Due to post-adoption services provided, we prefer to adopt within a 150-mile radius of the Twin Cities. However, we will consider up to 250 miles if the foster agrees to travel requirements and staff approval.

Story
Meet Kookie! Kookie is a beautiful 1.5-year-old Great Pyrenees/Newfoundland mix with a big heart to match her big, fluffy body. At around 80 pounds, she is every bit the gentle giant and is happiest when she gets to be near the people she loves. This sweet girl is affectionate, loyal, and snuggly. She enjoys spending time with her people, going for walks, playing in short bursts, and soaking up attention. Kookie walks nicely on leash when she is relaxed, takes treats gently, and has been described by her foster home as a “sweet snuggle bug.” She also has an adorable habit of jumping up for hugs, which may have been something she learned in her previous home. Kookie has many of the wonderful traits people love about guardian breeds. She is devoted, people-oriented, watchful, and protective of the people she bonds with. Because of this, she will do best with an adopter who appreciates large guardian-type dogs and can give her calm leadership, consistency, and time to settle into her new home. Kookie is mostly potty trained, but her adopter should be prepared to watch for her cues as she adjusts to a new routine. She is not a huge fan of the crate, but she can be encouraged with treats. She would likely prefer a home where she can be close to her people and not left alone for long stretches right away. Kookie has been wonderful with people once she has a little time to warm up. She may bark when someone new enters the room, but with patience and space, she is able to make friends. She has also done well with teens and visitors coming and going in her foster home. Kookie is looking for a home that can help her feel safe, loved, and understood. This big, beautiful girl has so much love to give, and with a patient adopter who appreciates her loyal guardian heart, Kookie is going to make an amazing companion.

Story
Introducing Kit: part Great Pyrenees, part Doberman, and 100% professional weirdo. She’s about three years old, has legs for days, and a nose that works overtime like a tiny detective on an endless case. Kit has gone from “stranger danger” mode to “sniff your hair while you’re watching Netflix” mode, and that’s what we call progress.   Her daily routine is very official: three laps around her kennel like an Olympic track star before dinner, followed by stealing the couch or your bed because, honestly, she’s royalty and crates are for peasants. She’s learning that humans = belly rub dispensers, and she’s totally here for it.   Kit is a huge fan of dogs, though she sometimes comes in a little too hot on first introductions (think: bossy camp counselor vibes). Once she knows who’s in charge, she’s good to go, and she’s the best babysitter for puppies. What she is not into? Cats, chickens, birds, squirrels, or basically anything small and fluffy that isn’t her designated sibling. For those, her prey drive kicks in and—let’s just say—it’s a hard no.   She’s obsessed with running, but luckily, she’s not a fence-jumper. A nice sturdy yard is her dream stage for zoomies. When she’s not sprinting, she’s all about long walks, soft toys, and claiming furniture like it’s her birthright. She’ll even listen to “leave it” when she’s yelling at the neighbors, which is basically the dog version of good manners.   Kit is still a little shy at first, but once she warms up, you’ll find a goofy, loyal, slightly dramatic best friend who makes the small victories (like coming when called) feel like winning the lottery. She’s been waiting long enough—this couch hog is ready to claim your couch and, more importantly, your heart.       Adoption fee includes: Full veterinary exam, alter, prepaid microchip, dewormed, Rabies vaccine, DAPP vaccine, Bordetella vaccine, 4DX , flea/tick and heartworm preventative while in rescue. Story
Meet Mika, an exceptionally sweet and friendly Great Pyrenees mix who is ready to find her forever family. Born in August 2025, this young pup has already made a big journey in her short life, starting out as a stray in Texas before traveling north to Minnesota to find a fresh start.    Mika is fully house-trained and crate-trained, making her transition into a new home much smoother for her adoptive family.   Mika is a true social butterfly who absolutely adores everyone she meets, including all humans and other dogs. She has also been introduced to cats while on a leash and in a kennel, handling the meetings beautifully with no issues at all.    One of her absolute favorite activities is giving heartwarming hugs to her human friends, showing off her gentle and loving nature.   When it is time for a stroll, Mika likes to keep her favorite people as close as possible. While on a leash, she loves to walk right next to your feet, occasionally even stepping playfully between your legs to stay connected.    She is a gentle, affectionate companion who is completely ready to fill a lucky home with endless love and loyalty.   Adoption fee includes: Full veterinary exam, Alter, Prepaid microchip, Dewormed, Rabies vaccine (if age appropriate), Distemper combo vaccine(s) appropriate to age, Bordetella vaccine, 4DX (over 6 months of age), Flea/tick and heartworm preventative while in rescue. Story
Meet Jake!  Jake is a 12-week-old Great Pyrenees mix with a big personality and an even bigger heart. He loves spending time outside, happily soaking in the fresh air and exploring his surroundings. Jake is playful, cheerful, and full of spunk—he’ll run up and down hills chasing a ball (he’s still working on bringing it back ). He’s doing great on walks and is already comfortable on a leash. While he was a little unsure about stairs at first, he’s now confidently running up and down them like a pro. Jake is also learning quickly—he’ll paw at the door when he needs to go outside and has already mastered how to sit! Jake is wonderful with little kids and has done well with other dogs so far. He loves his toys and is definitely a big chewer, so he’ll do best in a home that keeps him stocked with plenty of chew toys. If you’re looking for a fun-loving, adventurous, and sweet companion, Jake might be your perfect match!  Adoption fee includes: Full veterinary exam, Alter, Prepaid microchip, Dewormed, Rabies vaccine (if age appropriate), Distemper combo vaccine(s) appropriate to age, Bordetella vaccine, 4DX (over 6 months of age), Flea/tick and heartworm preventative while in rescue.
