Story
For nearly a year, Matilda has been waiting 🥲
She was found running the streets and eventually brought in by animal control. When she came to us, she was so scared and shut down that it was hard to see the dog underneath all that fear. Honestly, sometimes it still is.
Matilda’s world is very small right now. Her crate is her safe place, and that’s where she spends most of her time. She isn’t going to run up to greet you or jump in your lap. A hand reaching toward her can still be scary. If things move too quickly, she’ll run. And if she can’t get away, she freezes and shakes, just hoping she can get back to her crate.
But there is another Matilda.
Shes the little dog who will carefully take a treat from your hand. Every once in a while, she’ll decide that sitting next to you isn’t quite so scary and let you scratch her ears for a few seconds. She LOVES chicken nuggets and has been caught sneaking out of her safe spot to investigate an unattended plate. She’s also a toy hoarder. When she thinks no one is watching, she’ll collect toys and make herself a little stash.
And then there’s Matilda with other dogs. That’s when we see the most change. Her tail comes out and starts wagging. She follows her dog friends around, watches what they do, and seems so much more comfortable just having them nearby.
We really believe there’s a happy, playful little dog in there. She just needs someone who is willing to give her the time and space to find her way out. She needs someone who understands that her progress may look different than it does with other dogs.
We know adopting her won’t be easy. She will need patience, understanding, and someone who is willing to celebrate the little victories. But after nearly a year of waiting, we want her to have more than a safe place to stay. We want her to have a home.
Matilda is looking for a forever family who:
Will let her move at her own pace and never rush her
Has another friendly, confident dog to help show her that the world isn’t so scary
Has a securely fenced yard. The outdoors is still very overwhelming for her, and she is an extreme flight risk. Leash walks are not something she is ready for right now.
