Story
Finny ACCT-A-241276 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Finny must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 5TH at 10AM. Should Finny’s medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Finny came to ACCT Philly as a stray on January 13th after being reported roaming the area for at least a day. He has shown himself to be a sensitive and cautious dog who warms up with patience, treats, and gentle handling. Staff and volunteers describe him as very sweet—nervous at first, but affectionate and even eager to give kisses once trust is established. Finny walks nicely on leash and has done well meeting other dogs. Finny would do best in a home with children over the age of 12 who can respect his boundaries and support him as he continues to build confidence. Due to his length of stay, Finny is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or adopter.

BEHAVIOR:
Per staff 1/26: Medium energy. Excited to go outside - likes snow but door was not opening to go out today - held by garage door :(
Per staff 1/22: An ACA was in the pen with Finny. When she was attempted to switch to her slip lead instead of the clip leash he began jumping up and biting at the leash. Due to behavioral changes, he was leveled up to Blue.
Per volunteer 1/21: Medium energy. Loves to run with Lou Dog.
Per volunteer 1/18: Low energy. Very sweet but very nervous, does not like the snow.
Per staff 1/18:
Kennel Presentation: Laying on the bed when I approached. Soft eyes, ears forward and neutral body. I tossed a treat to him on the bed which he ate.
Leash Skills: Had to step in to the kennel and lean to leash. Did a treat lure to leash up. He walked out slowly. We walked through the building to go to the newer yard for a dog meet. His head was low, tail down and hyper vigilant going around corners. He would also flinch going past people in the hallways.
Sociability: Shy guy who let me do some soft/slow consent petting. Eyes were soft and ears forward with a tail down.
Play: n/a
Dog Interaction: Met Skittle. He sniffed and then moved away. Not overly interested in interacting with her.
Return to Kennel: Walked right in and I had the leash clipped. Offered a treat and removed the leash.
Color Level: Exp Gold
Recommendations and considerations: Best suited for a home with kids 12+ due to fearful behavior.
Per staff 1/18: Got his other meds this morning in food with no problem, unable to give eye meds even with food as a distraction he kept moving and looking away and I did not want to push him.
Per staff 1/17: Medium energy. Ducked head w/ leash + moved back when getting out but slowly looped + he came out. Outside he was a little shy but allowed pets + gave lots of kisses.
Per staff 1/15:
Kennel Presentation: Laying on the bed when I approached. Squinty eyes, ears forward and neutral body.
Leash Skills: Had to step in with one foot and treat lure to leash as he did not get up from laying on the bed. Slowly walked out, and walked nicely next to me. We walked through the building and he was cautious passing people and would slow down a little.
Sociability: Came over and allowed gentle pets and gave low swaying tail wags with ears to the side and soft eyes.
Play: n/a
Dog Interaction: Met Skittle. Did some nice parallel walking sniffed and went off doing their own thing.
Return to Kennel: Walked right into kennel without issue.
Color Level: Exp Gold
Per staff 1/15, vet exam: Nervous but significantly calmer and more complaint than yesterday (on Gaba/Traz). Politely taking treats
Per staff 1/14, vet exam: Very fearful and anxious.
Per staff 1/14: ACA was attempting to take out to clean kennel. Finny retreated to the corner of the kennel sitting on the bed with tense eyes, ears forward and gave a paw lift. ACA tried to lasso but Finny was dodging. Did a shake off when the leash touched him. I tossed a treat in and he ate it. Handed the ACA some pepperoni and he was able to treat lure to leash. Making available due to improved behavior from last nights interaction.
Per staff 1/13: Went out to take a picture and attempt to scan the dog. While in the car, he growled, had a stiff body, stared intensely, and bared his teeth at ACA Matt P. We asked the finder to leash the dog inside the car because we observed how quickly the dog's behavior changed with the finder, he immediately started wagging his tail very fast, had a loose body, and soft eyes. The finder leashed the dog, and he exited the car without issue. ACA Matt was then able to walk the dog straight to a kennel.
Per finder 1/13: Temperamental with strangers. Licks. Friendly, shy, scared, and playful.
MEDICAL:
On 1/30, Finny was neutered.
On 1/17, Finny was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) or "doggy cold" and started on antibiotics. He tested negative for pneumovirus and finished his medication on 1/30.
On 1/14, Finny was prescribed gabapentin and trazodone due to his anxiety and fear. He was also evaluated for gastrointestinal upset, including vomiting and diarrhea, which has since resolved with supportive care, medications, and monitoring. He had some eye discharge, with an initial concern for entropion that was later ruled out.
During his intake exam on 1/13, Finny weighed 47.3 pounds and was in ideal body condition. He was estimated at 2 years old and had white adult teeth. His eyes, nose, and coat were clean. Staff could not look at his ears due to being head shy.
