Story
Rue was brought into animal control after being severely injured. When she was brought to the shelter, her body was ravaged by infection, her spirit barely holding on, and she was pregnant. For days, she fought death and worked hard just to eat and stand. Then on Christmas eve, Rue went into labor. Her puppies were born far too soon. One by one, they slipped away, tiny lives that never got the chance to open their eyes. All of her puppies perished, except one. That fragile little life became Rue’s reason to stay. She clung to that puppy and that puppy clung to her through pain, struggles, and exhaustion. In the middle of unimaginable loss, Rue chose love. She chose to live. Slowly, against all odds, her wounds healed and hope returned. Today, Rue is gentle in a way only survivors are. Once she knows you, she’s your best friend—loyal, affectionate, and always by your side. This 3 year old, 60lbs sweetheart walks beautifully on the leash. She gives the most fabulous cuddles and will be the best TV buddy. While she loves people, her instinct is to flinch when an unknown hand comes close to her head. We know this will improve with time, love, and trust. But for now, she will need patience and kindness. She is playful with other dogs, and even coexists peacefully with cats. She has been around children between the ages 3-10 and is equally gentle and sweet with them. She carries grief in her eyes, but also gratitude. She has known the worst of this world and still offers her heart freely. Rue is pure at heart, pure goodness, pure love. She is also an expressive girl who has a constant happy grumble to tell you how much she enjoys your attention. She just wants to be part of your life and world. Rue is crate trained and 80% potty trained. She enjoys being outside but can be a little nervous with new places and loud noises, so she is only considering a quiet household in quiet neighborhoods. Story
Our perfect boy Petey is still on the hunt for his forever family... Petey is a total 10 out of 10!! This 5 year old gentleman is full of love with a distinct eye patch that gives main character energy. Petey LOVES his people - big and small. Even at 65lbs, he thinks he's a lap dog and loves to snuggle. He’ll climb on top of you if you try to ignore him. His favorite trick is to give you his paw for treats and he’s not shy about using it as his secret weapon to get all the snackys he wants! He LOVES playing with balls, but fetch eludes him - he chases the balls, sometimes brings them back, and almost never drops it. He is also not the best scent dog. He once buried his tennis ball in the backyard, and he is still searching for it weeks later. Petey would make the best traveling companion. A potato at heart, he does not have big exercise needs. A little running around outside or a short walk, then he’s ready for a nap. He sleeps in his dog bed all night - after a few valiant but failed attempts at sleeping with his humans of course He is a creature of comforts. Transitions are super hard for Petey, which is not surprising given the loss he's experienced over the past year. He struggled with some separation anxiety when he first arrived, but now has free roam of the house with no issues when his fosters are gone. He despises the crate, and will hurt himself trying to break free. So his forever home must be one who will not crate him. Petey deserves the very best. He’s been through so much heartbreak. He needs stability and consistency. His ideal home is one where his people are home more often than not, or can take him with them for errands, baseball games, school pick ups, etc. He would prefer a fenced yard to run and roam - and chase away pesky wildlife. If you live in DC/MD/NoVa and are looking for a forever companion, forever love, forever best friend, forever partner in crime, Petey is your guy! Fill out an application for him below to begin the process. https://forms.gle/rN3LQrooifLDfXti9
