Story
Meet Pepper - the big shaggy girl! We aren`t exactly sure of her DNA but are guessing based on her looks that she is some sort of doodle (poodle lab mix). Pepper first came to the Shelter because her previous guardian was having some medical difficulties that made it hard to care for a large, active dog. Since her arrival at the Shelter, she has been social with humans and other dogs. She is a smart cookie who knows sit, stay, heel, and come. She has experience with teens but was a bit too rambunctious for small children previously (jumping up when excited and knocking them over). Pepper walks nicely on leash and has even gone for 3 mile runs - keeping a good pace with her person! Due to some observed prey drive, Pepper would thrive in a home free of cats, small animals and livestock. Her favorite things to do are play with toys, go to the beach, and go for hikes. Her favorite toy in a previous home was a soccer-sized ball. Staff and volunteers are not quite sure why this cute dog with a fun personality is being overlooked at the Shelter. If you are a family looking for a dog to join you on adventures, an active couple looking for a running buddy or a single person looking for a sidekick to snuggle - come meet Pepper! To sweeten the deal, Pepper`s adoption has been sponsored by a generous donor! The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Theo is a loving, playful 1-year-old standard poodle mix looking for his forever home. He has gentle, patient temperament and does wonderfully with our 2-year-old child. He also gets along well with other dogs and loves to run, play chase, and be part of the fun. Theo can be a little shy when meeting new people, but once he warms up, he becomes incredibly affectionate and cuddly. He enjoys being close to his family. He is house-trained, crate-trained, and knows several basic commands. He is very intelligent and highly trainable. Theo weighs about 60 lbs and has a soft black coat with subtle gray highlights. As a poodle mix, he is low shedding. He is up to date on all vaccinations, has no known health issues, and is currently eating Purina Pro Plan (salmon formula). We adopted Theo as a young puppy and have truly loved having him as part of our family. Due to changing life circumstances, we can no longer keep him, but our priority is finding him a loving home.

Story
She was nervous neglected and matted when the shelter took her in mid Dec. Thanks to their volunteer foster home that took care of her. She did well with them and their small dog. Very sweet. Took some time for her to relax and trust. She is now shaved down and had her vet care. At first groomer she was fearful and nipped. Weeks later 2nd groomer was able to shave her down. Good on leash for walks. Her previous wonderful foster home could not keep her due to her move. She is now with our experienced and adult foster home for TLC. 💜 More info and new photos to come. She is already doing fine with their two dogs. 😍🐶🐶 See more adorable photos of Aimee on our Facebook! 3/11/26: Aimee is a sweet playful and affectionate little girl. She loves to play with her toys explore the yard and finding a sunny spot to relax. Aiimee is playful and loves both humans and dogs. She did very well on walks downtown. Enjoyed her bath and loves to be brushed. Aimee would do best with another playful dog at hone to bond with. Aimee is a sweet and lovable pup who will make someone very happy. Her beautiful loving gaze with those hazel eyes melts my heart. Aimee need someone home every few hours or WFH Home with backyard so she can do zoomies and lounge in the sun and she LOVES playing with another dog at home. She is not a apt dog to be left home alone for long hours alone. Not fair to her. She is active and fast runner in the foster home's yard. Meet Bentley - a large, uniquely handsome goofball who believes personal space is a myth and laughter is a daily requirement. With his one-of-a-kind looks and oversized heart, Bentley has mastered the art of making people smile just by existing.
