Story
Zinny was abandoned at the shelter alongside his brother Zabu (who is also coming to Canada) when they were just 2 months old. They were in rough shape with scabby skin and very little fur, but they quickly bounced back with proper care and TLC at the shelter. Zinny is a very social dog who enjoys interacting with both people and other dogs. He may initially need a little time to become comfortable with unfamiliar people and environments, but once he develops trust, he becomes very affectionate and loving. Zinny is Zabu's brother, and they previously lived together. They have since been separated and are currently housed in different areas of the facility. Since the separation, we have observed Zinny seeking more interaction with the people he already knows. He appears less hesitant and cautious around familiar caregivers and is increasingly choosing to approach and engage in social contact. This has been a positive change and suggests that he is developing greater confidence in his relationships with people independently of his brother. He remains social with other dogs and has spent most of his life living in a group environment. Because living with other dogs is the social environment he knows best, having a social canine companion in his future home would likely help support his adjustment, but he could also adjust fine on his own given his increasing confidence with people. Zinny does not show food aggression toward people. However, because he has lived in an environment where food has historically been a competitive resource, he may defend his food from another dog that attempts to take it. He does not typically initiate conflict over food, but he may respond if another dog growls at him or attempts to take his resource. Structured and separate feeding is recommended, particularly during his transition. Zinny can walk on leash, although unfamiliar environments may initially affect his confidence. Continued positive practice should help him become increasingly comfortable as he adapts to his new surroundings. Zinny is a sweet goofy guy. He adores playing with rope toys and balls, and doing zoomies, or playing chase with his brother. He has the most epic Mohawk - which is pretty much the only way to tell him and his brother apart. He loves people and happily comes over for pets, or to curl up by your feet. He was such a good boy with his groomer and looks like a whole new dog! He is good with other dogs and enjoys having someone to play with. Medical Notes: treated for ehrlichia and anaplasmosis Good with men: Yes, Zinny has had positive interactions with male caregivers and the male veterinarian Good with women: Yes Good with kids: Yes, older children recommended as his interactions with kids has been limited Good with other dogs: Yes Good with cats: Unknown House trained: Unknown, he has never been in a house before, however in the area that he is currently living in, there is an interior and exterior area and he knows to go to the bathroom outside on the gravel, versus on the tiled area where he sleeps. House training will be required when he is introduced into a home environment. Crate trained: No Energy Level: Medium Can be handled/touched: Yes, Zinny did well for his grooming and vet examination. He may initially need a little time to develop trust, but once comfortable he is very affectionate. Barker: Occasionally, he joins in with other dogs when they are barking Flight risk: Yes, after a long and stressful travel day from Mexico and being introduced to an entirely new environment, with new people and nothing being familiar, he will be quite nervous and may try to run. Extra precautions should be taken to ensure he cannot escape a home or vehicle while he settles in. Food aggressive: No food aggression with people. He has lived in an environment where food has historically been a competitive resource. He may defend his food from another dog that attempts to take it. Zabu is a social dog who can be very shy and cautious with unfamiliar people. When he feels unsure, he prefers to keep his distance rather than approach. Once he develops trust and feels safe with someone, he becomes much more comfortable with human interaction. Zabu is social with other dogs and has spent most of his life living in a group environment. His brother, Zinny, has historically provided him with additional confidence in unfamiliar situations. Having a confident, socially appropriate canine companion in his future home would be helpful as Zabu adjusts to the transition. He can walk on leash, although his confidence may decrease in unfamiliar environments. Continued positive leash work and allowing him time to explore new surroundings without pressure should help him become increasingly comfortable. Zabu does not show food aggression toward people. When he feels insecure, he may hesitate to eat and other dogs can take his food. In situations involving competition around food, he may respond if another dog growls at him. This has developed in a group environment where food has historically been a competitive resource. Providing him with a quiet, protected feeding area and predictable access to food is recommended. Zabu will likely need some additional support during his initial transition because of his cautious nature and the number of environmental changes involved in travel and relocation. Giving him time, predictability, and the opportunity to build relationships at his own pace will be important. A confident canine companion may also help him navigate his new environment and develop confidence with his new caregivers. Once Zabu trusts he is such a loyal, loving and delightful dog. He adores cuddles and would give you endless kisses if he could. He loves attention, ear scratches and just to be by your side. He loves to be silly and play with toys and zoom around the shelter with his brother. On hot days you can find him lounging in a pool to cool off. This boy will need a little bit of patience, but boy is he worth it. He will be the most faithful, loving companion, and he will be your shadow for life. I’m an irresistibly cute little dog with a wonderfully chunky build, a big face, oversized paws, and surprisingly short legs. Put it all together and I have the kind of proportions that make people stop and smile. I’m currently sporting a shorter haircut, but my coat looks like it will grow in much fuller and fluffier—I’m going to become even more handsome once it does. My personality is every bit as lovable as my appearance. I’m sweet and affectionate with people, friendly with other dogs, and naturally easygoing. I enjoy affection and have plenty of charm, but my overall energy is comfortable and well-balanced. I’m the kind of dog my rescuers describe as genuinely easy to care for: gentle, stable, adaptable, and happy to go along with everyday life. There is one thing about me that definitely isn’t small: my voice! I’m a bit of a talker, and thanks to my broad chest, I can produce a surprisingly impressive bark for my compact body. If the other dogs start barking, I may join the conversation. If I spot something interesting outside, I may announce it. And if there’s something I particularly want, I’m not above using my voice to make my opinion known. The funny part is that I usually have a lot to say—but not necessarily for very long. Rather than barking endlessly, I’m more likely to deliver a decisive little announcement and then move on with my day.
