Meet Koia, a one-year-old Pit/Bully mix weighing 60 pounds.Koia is a big-hearted girl with a sensitive soul who is just beginning to discover what a safe and loving world can look like. She came to animal control after being surrendered from a severely neglectful situation where she had gone seven days without food. Tragically, there were also deceased dogs on the property, and it’s clear Koia has had very little positive exposure to the world around her. Because of this, everything is still new and sometimes overwhelming for her—but she is trying.Despite her past, Koia is a strong, affectionate “tank” of a dog with a sweet and goofy personality starting to shine through. When she gets excited, she bursts into joyful zoomies, and she absolutely loves treats, which makes her highly motivated for training and building trust. She’s not yet comfortable on a leash and can be a strong puller, so she’ll need a patient adopter willing to teach her at her pace with gentle, consistent guidance.Once she feels safe, Koia reveals a softer side—she enjoys affection and has a surprising love for being close to her people, even leaning into lap time when she feels secure.Koia needs a calm, understanding home that will help her continue learning that the world isn’t so scary. In return, she offers resilience, loyalty, and the beginnings of a truly special bond with someone willing to give her the time she’s always deserved. This pet is available for adoption on 6.26.26 at the Yakima Humane Society adoption center. Story
Meet Princess Betsy, a four-year-old Pit mix weighing 55 pounds.Princess Betsy is a sweet and gentle girl who is looking for a fresh start and a family to love. She was surrendered by her previous owners through no fault of her own when they were no longer able to afford her care. It`s clear that this transition has been difficult for her—she is understandably confused and misses her people—but despite everything, she remains incredibly loving and kind.According to her previous owners, Princess Betsy is potty trained and has lived successfully with children. They describe her as shy at first, but also affectionate, playful, and the perfect couch potato once she`s comfortable. She enjoys spending time with her people and would love a home where she can feel safe, secure, and cherished again.Princess Betsy walks nicely on a leash and has been very sweet with shelter staff. She seems happiest when she`s receiving attention and affection, and she`s ready to bond deeply with a family willing to give her the patience and stability she needs while she settles into a new routine. Her previous owners reported that she may have seasonal allergies and a heart murmur. We have not independently confirmed these conditions, and she is not currently receiving medication for either. However, adopters should be aware of this history and may wish to follow up with their veterinarian after adoption.Princess Betsy is looking for a home filled with love, understanding, and consistency. If you`re searching for a loyal companion who will happily share both playtime and cuddle time, this sweet girl may be your perfect match. Come meet Princess Betsy and help her write the next chapter of her story. This pet is available for adoption on 6.16.26 at the Yakima Humane Society adoption center. Story
Oliver has had a rough time finding home. He was surrendered, then adopted by someone who sold him for drugs, then finally found a great mom until the landlord changed his mind after 8 months. So now he is looking for home again. He is a sweet and affectionate dog with jealousy issues. That's why he should be the only pet, he can be friends with other dogs but he's picky. We will require either a letter from your landlord approving a pitbull or you must own your own property.

Story
Meet Cheese, a one and a half year old Boxer/Pointer mix.Cheese’s story is a tough one for such a young dog. Adopted as a puppy in 2025, he’s unfortunately been returned to the shelter three times. That kind of instability is hard on any dog, and it’s left him with some separation anxiety—but it’s also made one thing very clear: Cheese is ready for a true forever home that will commit to him for life.Despite everything, Cheese is still a happy, outgoing, and delightfully dorky guy. His adorable underbite gives him a constant goofy grin, and his playful personality makes him a joy to be around. He bonds deeply with his people and thrives on connection—he just needs someone who can give him consistency, reassurance, and clear direction.Cheese is a smart pup who already knows “sit” and is very treat motivated, which makes training a great way to build his confidence and strengthen your bond. He’s strong and energetic, so he’ll do best with an adopter who can provide structure, regular exercise, and guidance to help him feel secure.Because of his prey drive, Cheese would do best in a home without cats. What he really needs is someone who understands that he’s been through a lot and is ready to show him what stability and unconditional love look like. He has met other dogs while with us and has done extremely well and could be a good candidate for a home with another dog. If you’re willing to invest in him, Cheese will give you his whole heart—and he’s just waiting for the person who will make sure he never has to come back again. This pet is available for adoption on 4.21.26 at the Yakima Humane Society adoption center. Story
Meet Teddy, a two-and-a-half-year-old Retriever/Boxer mix weighing 60 pounds. Teddy’s story starts with hardship, but it doesn’t define the dog he is today. He came to us through Animal Control after being surrendered by his owner, having lived in poor conditions with limited access to food and water. Despite everything he’s been through, Teddy has held onto a gentle, trusting heart. This sweet boy is lowkey and loving most of the time, happy to be by your side and soak up affection. He walks nicely on a leash, loves treats, and is eager to learn—he truly wants to please his people. Teddy has also shown that he is potty trained in a home environment. When he gets excited, Teddy can jump up, so a home without very young children would be the best fit. He would do best in a home without cats, as he does like to chase them. Teddy can do well with other dogs given a proper introduction.Teddy is ready for a fresh start with a family who will give him the stability, care, and love he’s always deserved. This pet is available for adoption on 5.1.26 at the Yakima Humane Society adoption center. If you recognize this animal please contact the adoption center at 509-457-6854.Did you know YHS offers a `Play Date` program?Whether you are interested in adopting or just want to hang out with a furry friend, it`s a fun way to spend an hour, an afternoon or even a couple days. Every Play Date helps staff know more about a pet and helps a pet spend less time in a kennel. It`s a win-win! If you are interested in adoption, a play date is a great way to make sure you and your potential new pet are the perfect match. Stop by the front desk or call in and ask how to have your Play Date today.Ready to adopt?Great news-our spayed/neutered pets are available to go home the same day!
