Story
Meet Leona! Leona is a 5 year old cattle dog/pitbull mix. Leona needs a home with no cats or small animals and no small children. She is still very much a puppy and loves to play. She loves people and loves to give kisses. She would do best in a fenced in yard. If you would like to make Leona a part of your family, fill out an application at www.barktownrescue.org  LEONA'S ADOPTION FEE IS $170   *Due to Covid 19 restrictions some of our new intakes vet scheduling has been delayed. We will still go ahead and schedule your meet and greet even if all the vetting needed has not been completed. Once vetting is complete the approved adopter will be able to take their dog/cat home to their forever home. The shelter software system requires that we choose a predominant breed or breed mix for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable so for most of our dogs we are only guessing at the dog's predominant breed or breed mix. We strongly encourage you to select your new pet by looking at each dog's individual personality and pet qualities rather than relying on a breed label that is only our best guess.    Our adoption fees vary from $150 and up.  All of our dogs are up to date on vaccines, heart worm preventives, and flea/tick medication, and will be spayed/neutered prior to adoption. Portions of your adoption fee also help care for the sick and injured animals that we take in.  Thank you for supporting us and considering a rescue dog!    April 26, 2024, 6:20 am

Story
Say hello to Meeko! Meeko is part Australian cattle dog. He is relentlessly happy. He will always be happy to see. Loves playing outside, with toys, or with other dogs. He is also a great cuddler.  He had a tragic puppyhood. He had a horrible case of mange. He recovered from that, then he got so sick and almost died, but he fought back! Then he was in a bad car wreck but bounced back from that too. He clearly lives life to the fullest and loves everyday after going through those set backs. He is crate trained, and loves crashing hard in his bed while he waits for his person to get home from work. He is also very food motivated, so very trainable, and does great on walks.  He has been healthy, happy and fully vaccinated for some time. His foster home for the last year has had 2 other dogs and a decent size yard for him to blow off some energy. His perfect home would include someone who is as loving as he is, has had experience with energetic dogs in the past, someone who is active, and has a yard so he can run off some of his breeds naturally energy. Story
Millie (vet has her as Millie Creek) is about 6 years old, utd on shots, and has been spayed. We are guessing her to be a Jack Russell/Cattle Dog mix. She weighs 25 pounds. Millie was found as a stray, and we believe that she had been on her own for quite some time. She is very shy and is not one to willingly go to people. She tolerates the other dogs but doesn't play with them. She needs a calm environment. Millie would be a great companion for a older person or couple where someone is home alot and will have the patience to work with her to help her gain trust in humans. She doesn't jump or bark and is a very quiet dog.

Story
Jack is approx 3 to 5 years old. He sees vet later this month. He appears to be English Pointer and Lab/Collie mix. Jack was a stray which showed up in Russell County, no one answered any postings. Jack weighs about 50 pounds but needs groceries and when altered and healthier he will probably weigh 60# He is great with other dogs. Cats NO. Probably no on chickens or small animals. Children over 5 at least. He is house trained and knows basic commands. Seems a bit protective of his family. His nature is very sweet and he bonds quickly to humans. Learning leash training. Vaccines and testing & neuter scheduled for March 26th.
