Story
Rodney is a 1 - 2 yr old male Australian Cattle Dog mix. He has a high energy level, so he would benefit from an active family with a fenced yard and plenty of space for daily exercise and play. He is loose and wiggly when greeting, and comes when called for snuggles and kisses. Rodney does moderately pull on a leash, but with basic obedience training, he should be walking like a champ in no time! He is food motivated and knows the command sit. He mixes well with other dogs in a kennel, but is intensely interested in cats in the shelter environment. Dogs are generally tested with dogs of their own size; and dog meets with the resident dogs are always encouraged. Our cat test should be used as a general-purpose screening only to rule out overt aggression; we always recommend caution when introducing dogs to cats in the home. Recommendation on suitability of placement with children by their ages is based on behavioral observations including energy level and response to body handling. We never recommend leaving young children unsupervised with dogs, and we cannot guarantee the behavior of dogs with children, other pets, or cats. Behavior evaluations should be considered as a snapshot of the behavior of the dog at this point in time; JHS believes all dog families need to be prepared to invest time and energy into training as well as provide common sense management of their new dog. We always encourage family to do some research on the breeds or mixes of breeds prior to adoption as many can have some unique characteristics that may or may not fit into their families. Always remember that the majority of dogs at our shelter have been exposed to or may have kennel cough. Kennel cough is contagious to other dogs, please talk to your vet if you have any questions about kennel cough prior to adoption. Please ask your adoption counselor at time of adoption if you have any unanswered questions regarding illnesses and treatments of the pet that you are adopting. Story
Pike is a 5-month-old puppy that joined my family back in February. She is a rescue puppy that was found alone in the woods. My husband and I have had to make the very painful decision to rehome Pike despite how much we want to keep her. Pike is great with people and is extremely sweet. She loves playing fetch and is an endless ball of energy and love. Unfortunately, she isn't getting along well with my other animals. My biggest concern is the safety of my two cats. Pike has a high prey drive and goes after my cats. I have tried socialization and training, but it isn't working. Pike is also not getting along with my Berner and keeps trying to pick a fight with her. While my Berner thinks Pike is playing, it's still worrisome and I am concerned it will get worse with time. I feel like Pike is limited here and I want to see her go to a new home where she can thrive. She has a huge heart and has endless love to give. If you choose to adopt Pike, we will include all of her things/food.
