Story
Meet Peanut Peanut is a cute little dog with a BIG personality. Peanut was returned to us due to his high energy and willful ways. He needs to be able to run and play and expend his limitless energy. For one so small, this boy needs to be exercised or else he gets bored. And we all know a bored pup is never well-behaved lol! Peanut also needs a family who give him their attention and make him a part of their activities. Because of his energy, Peanut must go to a home with a confinement fence so he can run and play safely. Peanut looks like an Australian cattle dog or kelpie mix, but it’s hard to know without a DNA test. He is adorable and has a cuddly side, but he’s also 29 lbs. of energy, smarts and will. You can see the intelligence in his eyes. They sparkle and dance with anticipation of something fun to do. We stress this because he is so cute, people can’t imagine that he needs so much exercise or understand how strong-willed he can be. Even his foster dad says the boy is an energizer bunny and is happier when he’s run it out. Peanut likes playing with other dogs. But he must be an only dog. Funny he does better with cats, especially those that stand their ground. We paid for Peanut to go through an extensive and intense training/boarding course for a month to more fully understand Peanut as well as give him the best chance for adoption. The trainers and Peanut made great progress. He learned basic commands and he learned how to focus. He loved the training. His new owners will need to attend a training session with the professional trainers who worked with Peanut to understand how best to keep his training going. Peanut is not a set and forget kind of dog. He is an incredibly special dog. Peanut would do best with a person who has a strong, steady and consistent approach and presence to guide him. Peanut is the kind of dog who might make for a great agility dog, an activity that works his mind and athletic abilities, while bonding him to his person. He’d be a great trail dog. He could even be a great farm dog, but he is not to be left outside. He must be an inside dog with a mindful owner. Peanut isn’t a big barker. He knows how to live in a house. He likes his chew toys. He walks well on a leash. Peanut will be a great companion for someone who is looking for an energetic, smart, agile, handsome, and eager to go pup. BUT if you are thinking about Peanut because he looks cute, which he is, this is not the dog for you. Only experienced dog owners should apply. Peanut has tremendous potential to be the dog of a lifetime with the right kind of guidance and training. If interested in welcoming Peanut to your heart and home, please submit an application online at: www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org. Please email our shelter (smithgallhumanesociety@windstream.net) or call our shelter at 706-865-4135 and leave a message to make sure we received your application. All adopters must complete an approval process which involves a reference check with current/recent vet and a brief home visit if located in the immediate area. We do permit out-of-state adoptions. Adopters MUST come to the shelter to transport their new family member home. We do not ship, nor do we transport them to their new homes. Adoption policies and application procedures are detailed at the shelter website: http://charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org/ under tab All Adoptable Animals. Charles Smithgall Humane Society (CSHS) is a No kill shelter. Animals in our care remain safe with us until adopted. Resident animals are either owner relinquished rescued from area Animal Controls or high kill shelters. The facility usually operates at capacity with a list of animals waiting for space to open.

🐾 Meet Ritchie Rich 💚🐾 🎂 Age: 5 years ⚖️ Weight: Medium (40–50 lbs) 🧬 Breed: Australian Kelpie Mix 🚹 Gender: Male 📅 Intake Date: 02/15/2022 🏠 Adoption Fee: $200 💛 About Ritchie Ritchie may not be the guy striking poses for the camera, but give him a minute and you’ll see it… he’s a premium grade Love Nugget™ with a heart of pure gold. 💛 🐶 Personality Ritchie is a slow burn kind of sweetheart 🔥. He can be a little shy at first, especially with men, but once you’re in his circle… you’re IN. His goofy, affectionate side comes out, and suddenly you’ve got a loyal best friend who hands out kisses like they’re his full-time job. Volunteers adore him, and he proudly holds the title of “Love Nugget” around here. 🏡 Perfect Home Ritchie would thrive with a patient, kind human who understands that the best relationships take time. He’d love a home where he can build trust at his own pace, enjoy regular walks, and settle into a routine filled with love (and snacks… definitely snacks). 🐕 Compatibility 🐶 Dogs: Would do best with proper introductions 🐱 Cats: No 👧 Kids: Older kids that understand responsibility 🧠 Behavior & Training Notes Ritchie does best with a “get to know you” approach. A few leash walks, some treats, and a little patience go a long way. Lucky for you, he is VERY treat motivated… so yes, bribery is absolutely encouraged. 🦴😉 🩺 Health Ritchie is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations. He’s healthy and ready to head home. 📖 Their Story Ritchie has been with us since early 2022 after coming in as a stray. Despite spending far too long in the shelter, he hasn’t lost his joy or his ability to love. Outside of the shelter environment, he truly shines. 💎 💌 Why You’ll Love Ritchie Because he’s the kind of dog who makes you earn it… and then gives you a bond that’s deep, loyal, and incredibly special. Plus, he loves snacks so much he might actually be one. 🍪🐶 👉 Ready to meet Ritchie? Story
Meet Tater, a loyal companion with a big heart and an even bigger personality. He’s incredibly friendly, loves being around people, and thrives on playtime whether that’s chasing a ball, running through the grass, or just enjoying the moment with his family. He’s also naturally protective, always keeping a watchful eye and making sure his home and loved ones are safe. That balance of playful energy and loyal instinct makes him a great fit for someone looking for both a fun loving dog and a devoted companion. Tater especially loves being in the grass and would truly benefit from a home with more space to run and explore, as we currently don’t have a yard. He’s ready to bring joy, security, and unconditional love into his next home.

Story
Meet Jackson Jackson is stunning, matched only by his incredibly sweet and affectionate personality. If you are looking for your soul dog, your best friend, your ultimate companion, let Jackson be it. Jackson is very sensitive and wants to always do the right thing. He is amazing. Like so many great dogs, Jackson found himself on the euth list at a high kill shelter. With a huge advocacy team trying to get him to safety, Jackson was brought to our attention. Jackson is four years old. Our best guess is that he’s a boxer, French bulldog mix, but it’s hard to really know. His ears live in another zip code lol, and he has the most soulful eyes that just pierce your heart. Jackson is 55 lbs. of pure love. Jackson is friendly, out-going, athletic, smart, confident, easy-going, well-mannered, housetrained, and loving. He loves treats and takes them from your hand as gentle as a lamb. Jackson loves being with people. He would be good with kids (who are taught to interact with a dog properly.) He gets so excited when he’s taken out of his kennel, but he quickly settles down to a happy stroll. Jackson likes other dogs and does well with them. A kennel environment is so stressful for dogs, but when he walks by the other dogs barking at him, he shows no reaction. He enjoys running the fence line with his friends in other yards. He would probably do well with another active dog in the home, but not necessary, just a good option. Jackson is good with cats as well. And, he loves car rides. Jackson would love to be your hiking companion, your neighborhood walk guy, your lunch buddy and your curl up and watch tv boy. Jackson loves sunning in the yard and a fenced yard will be a must. He’s been through a lot and the demeanor he presents and his love for simply being alive are incredible. We’re doing everything we can to keep his spirits up. He’s receiving a lot of attention, lots of yard time, treats and love, but we hope his forever family or person finds him soon. Jackson is a dog of a lifetime and deserves to be in a loving home. If interested in Jackson, please submit an application online at: www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org. Story
Meet Layla Layla is a gorgeous tri-colored Australian Shepherd/Kelpie mix. She is stunning in person. Layla was surrendered when her owner could no longer care for her. She was gifted as a present to a son, who sadly didn’t have time for her as she grew up. Her owner turned to us to find her a loving and safe home where Layla would thrive. Layla is just three years old. She weighs 61 lbs. She has lived in a home for most of her life. She is housetrained and has terrific manners. She is very polite and looks to her people for guidance. Layla is athletic and energetic. She needs to exercise and run, but once her zoomies are out, she is calm and easier going. A fenced yard will be a must and will make Layla’s transition to your home that much easier. She loves playing fetch and chasing balls. Layla walks well on a leash, but can pull if excited, nothing that a gentle (or chest leader) might not correct. Layla has a sweet and gentle disposition. She will do well in an active family with older kids. We say older kids only for the reason that Layla doesn’t know her size and she could inadvertently knock over a toddler or smaller child unsteady on their feet in her excitement. Layla is a happy dog. She loves attention. She seems fine with bigger dogs, but she doesn’t seem to like cats. She travels in the car well. She loves being with her people. Layla has it all. We love this girl and know there is a home out there who will love her as much as we do. If interested in welcoming Layla to your family and making her dreams come true, please submit an application online at: www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org.
