Story
We adopted Bella from the Humane Society when she was four months old, and she has grown into a sweet, clever, and energetic dog. I’m looking for a home that can give her the care she truly needs including plenty of exercise, consistent routines, and social time with other dogs. Bella can be a little skittish at first, but once she trusts you, she becomes a very affectionate, clingy companion. She is extremely smart and learns quickly when someone gives her patience and guidance. She would thrive with an active family or someone familiar with working or high-energy breeds. I want to make sure she goes to a safe, stable, and loving home.

Story
2 yr old tricolor M/N Kelpie/GSD mix Looking for a dogs dog?? Gunner is your guy! He was comfortable enough around me, allowed touch, took treats, interacted some with me, but he really really wanted to play with the big dog in the next yard. He wasn't aloof though! Took treats gently, eager to please and loved being called a good boi, it was a fun yard time for both us us He does seem to be feeling the stress from the shelter, some have had some trouble getting him out of his kennel but he was perfectly behaved for me. This is an active breed, he will need consistent physical and mental exercise to be happy, it is likely what is causing his current stress and occasional barrier reactivity. It is worth noting that he was a very loud bork monster when I first approached his kennel but after 3 treats he was ready to follow me anywhere I was going Knows how to sit, walks well on the leash (just a tiny bit of pulling) and seemed potty trained!! ##2528145##

Story
Ceasar is a 15mth old altered male kelpie mix Ceasar Hey, I’m Ceasar. I’ll be real with you — I’m still figuring this whole “new people” thing out. Meeting strangers makes me nervous, and if I feel cornered, I might snap. But here’s the thing: once I get to know you and trust you, my softer side comes out, and I can relax and be myself. The good news? I get along with dogs way easier than I do with people! They help me feel comfortable and confident. With patience, training, and someone willing to go slow, I know I can keep improving just like I did with my foster. If you’re the type of person who believes in second chances and helping an underdog shine, I’d love to be your project pup and, eventually, your best friend. ##2498991##

Story
Meet Paige Paige is a beautiful young dog. She was surrendered when her family became homeless. They couldn’t care for Paige any longer. They came to our shelter on the very last day of 2025, exhausted and heartbroken. The surrender was tough. Paige was scared and sad, but the family was at peace knowing Paige would be safe at our no kill shelter. Paige is a two-year-old medium sized dog, about 33 - 35 lbs. She has a gorgeous black coat, alert eyes and a friendly smile. It’s hard to know her breeds, but she most looks like an Australian Kelpie, with perhaps a little Dutch Shepherd thrown in. We aren’t really sure though. She is coming out of her shell and showing her personality to our staff. But she is still scared and uncertain and very sad. She wants to trust us but is timid. Only when we get her walking and we talk to her does she begin to relax. We’ve moved her to a quieter location where she can decompress. It seems to be helping. She’s eating better but is still so thin. Her owners said she loves fetch, jumps for attention and gives hugs. Paige likes people, does well with kids, and likes dogs. She lived with a cat and should be fine with one as long as introductions are handled responsibly. Paige walks well on a leash and she’s housetrained too. Paige is a great young dog. She’s just lost everything but is trying hard to be brave. She loves going into the yard with our staff. She’s curious and likes to sniff, but has a wonderful habit of checking in. She’s a sweet girl and will be a wonderful addition to your family. If looking for a medium sized, smart and beautiful dog who just needs some TLC, get your application in for Paige. If interested in welcoming Paige to your heart and home, please submit an application online at: www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org. Please use the downloadable application found on our homepage. Please email our shelter (smithgallhumanesociety@windstream.net) to make sure we received your application. All adopters must complete an approval process which involves a reference check with current/recent vet and a brief home visit if located in the immediate area. We do permit out-of-state adoptions. Adopters MUST come to the shelter to transport their new family member home. We do not ship, nor do we transport them to their new homes. Adoption policies and application procedures are detailed at the shelter website: http://charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org/ under tab All Adoptable Animals.

Story
Meet Peanut Peanut is a cute little dog with a BIG personality. Peanut was recently returned to us due to his high energy and willful ways. He did great in a home, he loved his people and they love him, but Peanut can be a bit challenging. He needs to be able to run and play and expend his limitless energy. For one so small, this boy needs to be exercised or else he gets bored. And we all know a bored pup is never well-behaved lol! Peanut looks like an Australian cattle dog or kelpie mix, but it’s hard to know without a DNA test. He is adorable and has a cuddly side, but he’s also 29 lbs. of energy, smarts and will. You can see the intelligence in his eyes. They sparkle and dance with anticipation of something fun to do. We stress this because he is so cute, people can’t imagine that he needs so much exercise or understand how willful he can be. Even his foster dad says, the boy is an energizer bunny and is happier when he’s run it out. Peanut likes playing with other dogs. Another equally active dog in the home would be good. He does well with cats too, especially cats that stand their ground. Peanut might be best in a house with no children because he has had episodes of food guarding. He would do best with experienced dog owners, especially those who know the cattle dog breeds. Peanut has the ability to challenge and push boundaries. He’d do best with a person who has a strong, steady and consistent approach and presence to guide him. Peanut might even make for a great agility dog, an activity that works his mind and athletic abilities, while bonding him to his person. He’d be a great trail dog. Peanut isn’t a big barker. He knows how to live in a house. He likes his chew toys. He walks well on a leash. Peanut will be a great companion for someone who is looking for an energetic, smart, agile, handsome, and eager to go pup. BUT if you are thinking about Peanut because he looks cute and cuddly, this is not the dog for you. Only experienced dog owners should apply. That said, we think he has tremendous potential to be the dog of a lifetime with the right kind of guidance and training. If interested in welcoming Peanut to your heart and home, please submit an application online at: www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org. Please email our shelter (smithgallhumanesociety@windstream.net) or call our shelter at 706-865-4135 and leave a message to make sure we received your application. Adoption policies and application procedures are detailed at the shelter website: http://charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org/ under tab All Adoptable Animals. Resident animals are either owner relinquished rescued from area Animal Controls or high kill shelters. The facility usually operates at capacity with a list of animals waiting for space to open.

Story
Barkley is a 1-year-old Australian Shepherd/Heeler mix who is smart, loyal, goofy, and absolutely loves his people. He bonds closely and thrives when he has structure and a confident owner to guide him. Because he is a high-drive herding breed and still an intact male, Barkley has become territorial around other dogs and needs to be placed as an only dog in the home or a home with a female dog. He would do best with an experienced dog owner who understands working breeds and can give him routine, direction, and exercise. Barkley is sweet, affectionate, and eager to please in the right environment, he just hasn’t been the right fit in our multi-dog household, and we want to set him up for success. He is still young and incredibly capable of learning with the right leadership. We are looking for a calm, home where he can relax, feel secure, and be someone’s best friend.

Story
Interview with Dash:Interviewer: How did you arrive to the Animal Shelter? Dash: Well, I was walking down the street looking for leftover Thanksgiving scraps when I noticed that someone pulled their vehicle over to the side of the road. I assumed they had some scraps for me, so I walked up to them and jumped into their vehicle and guess what, no scraps, how rude!!!! The man who picked me up told me that he didn’t want me to get hurt and took me to the Animal Shelter. Interviewer: Did you like being at the Animal Shelter? Dash: At first no, because there were a lot of rowdy dogs in the area I was staying at. It scared me a bit and I just stayed to myself, but then one day I went out for a walk and they put me in the Administrative Supervisors office, which was awesome. I went from a small apartment to a condo! A big upgrade. Interviewer: What has changed since you arrived at the Animal Shelter?Dash: A lot has changed! When I arrived at the Shelter, I was heartworm positive. I went into a foster home while going through my treatment. Thankfully, my treatment has been completed and starting March 15th, I can return to my normal activities, like playing fetch with a tennis ball and going for long walks! I cannot wait, I’m so excited for this day to arrive. Also, my foster parent wanted to adopt me, which I was super excited about because she has been one of the best foster parents that any dog could ask for, but unfortunately with inflation and being on a limited income, she cannot adopt me. But that’s okay because my forever family is out there, I just know it.Interviewer: What do you look for in a family?Dash: Okay, I am going to be a little picky here. I am a woman’s man, but if the woman I adore has a man in her home, I’ll be okay with that ONLY under these circumstances: 1) Men like to wear these weird things on their heads that scare me sometimes. My foster parent told me those are called “hats”. Not sure what they do, but they sure do scare me and prefer they not be worn when I’m around. 2)No loud power tools in my presence. Those things scare me too.Other than those 2 circumstances, I should be perfectly fine with a male in the home. What will not work for me is children. They scare me as well. Anytime I get scared, I tend to nip at their shoes. I guess it’s the Heeler in me that makes me do that. I am not a fan of cats and I have never met a dog before, so I`m not sure how I`d do with them.Inter

Story
Meet Ned Ned is an approximately 10-month-old pup weighing around 25 pounds. He’s a sweet, thoughtful boy who’s more motivated by praise and connection than food, though he takes treats and bones very gently. Ned shows affection enthusiastically and is still learning appropriate manners—he can sometimes use his mouth a bit too much when excited—but he responds well to correction and is already making great progress. He’s a dream on a leash, calmly greeting both people and other dogs, and he’s an excellent car rider. Ned is the kind of dog who would love to go everywhere with you. He gets along well with his foster’s large dog and shows polite curiosity toward the cat—attempting to play but without chasing or prey drive. His favorite spot in the world? Right on your lap. While he hasn’t been formally kid-tested yet, he greeted a neighbor’s toddler gently and calmly. Ned sleeps quietly through the night in his crate and is quick to pick up potty routines. He would do well in many types of homes, as long as he gets regular exercise, mental stimulation, and a yard to burn off his zoomies. Curious, confident, and not fearful, Ned would make a wonderful companion for someone who wants a loyal buddy by their side as much as possible.Thank you for your interest in one of our Hero Babies! Before inquiring, we thought it was important to share a few of our policies. Puppies - We do not adopt puppies under 16 weeks to out of state adopters. This is due to our spay/neuter policy, and all dogs must be spayed/neutered before leaving Georgia state lines. We do not adopt siblings to the same household. Your Current Pets - We do require that your current dogs and cats are current on vaccines and spayed/neutered. Adoptions - We do not have a shelter and are a foster-home based organization. We do require that you have an approved adoption application to schedule a meet and greet. You can fill out an adoption application on our website, www.herorescue.org/adopt. Once your application is approved it will be sent to the foster family that is currently caring for the dog. They will be able to provide information on likes, dislikes, personality, etc. They will also schedule a time for you to meet the dog. We do require a home visit prior to adoption. Inquiries - If you would like more information on any dogs in the rescue, please email us at info@herorescue.org.
