HOW TO ADOPT: This dog is available for adoption by appointment. To schedule a time to meet this dog, please email meetme@arl-iowa.org.---- A happy cuddlebug who loves following his people around and hopping into your lap - Loves hanging out on his foster family's deck and sunbathing or people watching - Can be shy around new people at first but is so sweet once he knows you - Foster family says he likes to sit like a person on their chairs and sofa - LOVES going on walks and does great on a leash! - Likes treats but is not super food-motivated; foster family said they tried to ask him to show some skills but he just looked up at them cutely - Does well in the car - Goes into his kennel nicely when his foster family puts a treat inside for him; settles down quickly and sleeps in his kennel at night - Foster family says he appears to be mostly potty trained but has had some accidents in their home; may need some help from his new family to get to 100% - Got along well with four other dogs in his foster home; has lots of happy energy and may do best with like-minded dog friends - Has done well with his foster family's teenage neighbor and enjoyed sitting on her lap for pets - Came from a situation where they did not get the socialization and exposure to the world that dogs typically get from a young age. Because of this, they may struggle with new situations, may show uncertainty with novel everyday objects, may need help understanding leashes, and will need patience and structure with housetraining. - Has done best with a "helper" dog when it comes to learning that people can be OK, and we recommend that they go to a home with another dog - May not do well in a busy home with young children All adoptable dogs and puppies are spayed/neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations (rabies and DA2PPV as appropriate for their age)The ARL's shelter software requires that we choose a primary breed for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable, so for most dogs we are only guessing at primary breed. We get to know each dog as an individual and do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not breed label. Primary Color: Black Secondary Color: White Age: 2yrs 0mths 0wks

Story
Melvin is a young beagle mix who we are learning more about every day! He recently went on a home day trip and we learned he is good with kids and would probably do well with another dog and could coexist with cats! He was in the home for approximately 6 hours with no potty accidents.**More on Melvin---he went on another visit for a few days and we learned A LOT! He IS housetrained for sure, will go to the door and wait to go out. He knows some basic commands - sit, wait, down and is very smart and easily trainable. He got a bath and did wonderfully with that. He loves Kongs and fetch and zoomies:) We also learned that he has severe separation anxiety when he can see you but can`t be near you, so probably not best for him to be in an apartment! He can open cupboard doors, jump baby gates, needs tough toys (or he`ll tear them up) and would benefit from a fenced-in yard as he can escape his collar. He is a wonderful dog in many ways, but needs the right family to be active with and train him right from wrong. He is still a dream pup - another head-scratcher as to why he is in a shelter; but he won`t be for long. He`d make someone a fabulous family pet!
