Story
Meet Messi, a 3-year-old Beagle cross whose journey to our shelter began like the opening scene of a canine soap opera. Messi arrived as an unclaimed stray after being found roaming with three other dogs. While we can't say for certain whether they all came from the same home, we do know the situation reportedly involved an intact female, multiple intact males, and what can only be described as a dramatic love triangle (or perhaps love quadrangle). Witnesses reported some squabbling between the gentlemen while another suitor attempted to impress the lady. Messi maintains his innocence and has declined all requests for comment. Since arriving at the shelter and retiring from reality-TV-level romance, Messi has proven himself to be an absolute sweetheart. He is affectionate, friendly, and has quickly become a staff favourite. Whether you're a lifelong friend or someone he's just met 30 seconds ago, Messi is convinced you're the best thing that's happened to him all day. He actively seeks attention, loves spending time with people, and greets strangers with the enthusiasm of a celebrity meeting fans on a red carpet. He has been easy to handle, cooperative during daily care, and has shown no signs of food or resource guarding. When it comes to other dogs, Messi's social calendar remains wide open. He participated in a meet-and-greet with one of our helper dogs and had a wonderful time. Based on what we've seen, he may do very well with a compatible canine companion after a proper introduction. Thankfully, his days of competing in romantic drama appear to be behind him. Now, we do need to discuss Messi's current relationship status with the leash. It's complicated. Messi appears to have had little to no previous leash training and currently treats every walk like he's starring in an action movie. He charges to the end of the leash, zigzags across the sidewalk, investigates every scent known to mankind, and occasionally seems convinced that traffic lanes are simply wider sidewalks. Potential adopters should be prepared for training, patience, and a healthy sense of humour. He can absolutely learn, but right now he's operating under the belief that "walking nicely" is merely a suggestion. As a true Beagle, Messi follows his nose with unwavering dedication. If an interesting scent exists within a five-kilometre radius, Messi would very much like to investigate it immediately. A secure fenced yard and diligent leash management are essential, as scent hounds are famous for making independent travel plans. Prospective adopters should also know that Messi comes equipped with a fully functional Beagle voice. He enjoys expressing opinions, sharing observations, and occasionally providing neighbourhood updates nobody asked for. Because of his vocal nature, a detached home may be the best fit. Overall, Messi is a loving, social, good-natured dog with a wonderful temperament and a heart full of affection. He may need help learning manners and leash skills, but what he lacks in training he more than makes up for in charm, personality, and devotion. If you're looking for a loyal companion who will love you endlessly, keep you entertained daily, and occasionally sing you the song of his people, Messi may just be your perfect match. No more love triangles. Just one forever family. Story
Ramona / Female / 4 Years /23 lbs / Beagle Mix / Good with Dogs / Untested Kids / Untested Cats / From Mexico / Fostered in Toronto **Follow Ramona's journey on Instagram: @Apple.the.potato Ramona's rescue was completely unplanned. After a busy three-day spay campaign that had already resulted in eleven dogs being brought to safety, her rescuer was determined not to take on another. Then Ramona appeared. She was found in heat and being chased by a pack of male dogs. Despite having no intention of rescuing another dog that weekend, her rescuer knew she couldn't leave her behind. Since that day, Ramona has seemingly been trying to repay the favour with endless cuddles, kisses, and affection. Today, Ramona is a confident, affectionate, and wonderfully goofy girl who absolutely loves people. She thrives on attention, believes every lap belongs to her, and will happily roll onto her back for a belly rub at every opportunity. One of her sweetest habits is carrying her humans' shoes to her favourite sleeping spot—not to chew them, but simply because she likes having their scent nearby. Ramona is social, friendly, and eager to make new friends. She loves being included in family life, whether that's joining you on an adventure, going for a walk, or curling up beside you for a cuddle. She enjoys toys, chews, frozen Kongs, car rides, and playtime with her canine friends. She hasn't been formally tested with kids but we believe she would love human siblings! She gets along well with other dogs and would likely do well with a respectful dog sibling following proper introductions. She has not been tested with cats. On leash, she can be reactive toward unfamiliar dogs, so her future family should be prepared to continue working on this with positive reinforcement and management. In the home, Ramona is an absolute dream. She is house trained, trustworthy when left alone, non-destructive, and has wonderful house manners. She settles easily into routines and has been described by her foster family as one of the easiest dogs they have ever fostered. Ramona is looking for a family who will include her in their lives, shower her with affection, and appreciate the loyal, loving companion she is. In return, she'll provide endless cuddles, plenty of laughs, and a lifetime of devotion. Prior to coming into care, Ramona tested positive for Ehrlichia which is a tick-borne infection and is not contagious. A CBC was performed to see if there is an active infection. Ramona 's CBC came back indicating that there was an active infection which is improving, but still needs another recheck in 4-6 weeks (retest due middle/end of July). The Ehrlichia also has made some minor elevation changes in her kidney levels so a urine work up is also pending. It is recommended that Ehrlichia positive dogs get an annual blood test to monitor and that pre-op blood work including a CBC test and platelet count be performed before any surgeries or dental extractions. Musculoskeletal: - Ramona has a valgus deformity of her front legs. This is when the paw turns outward, away from the midline, at the wrist, typically affecting the front legs, as seen on Ramona. Valgus deformities are a type of angular limb deformity, which are caused by abnormal bone growth due to rapid growth, injury, or damage to a dog's growth plate. Ramona shows no signs of discomfort and doesn't need any medication or surgery to correct it, it is just a characteristic! If at any point she starts to become lame or show signs of discomfort then a further radiograph work up is recommended.
