Story
Meet Huckleberry & Finn! This unlikely duo (Huckleberry the Great Pyrenees and Finn the Malinois) arrived to the Shelter as strays after embarking on a grand adventure from home. After arriving safely at the Shelter, staff observed that this duo appear to be two peas in a pod and would thrive in an adoptive home together. Huckleberry is the more confident of the two while Finn is a little more shy and reliant on Huckleberry for comfort. They are very familiar with each other and seem to thrive in each other’s company. We are aiming to try to find them an adoptive home together. They have met other dogs (small and large) and have been interested in interaction – even soliciting some play. Staff have also observed that they walk well on leash and keep a tidy kennel. If you have room in your heart (and home) for two big dogs, consider meeting Huckleberry and Finn today!Huckleberry is available for preadoption at this time – come in, fall in love and you can take him home after his neuter surgery! Now through February 15th, all adoption fees are reduced to $33 - come to the Shelter today to adopt your very own Valentine! The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Meet Pumpkin: From Feral to Fabulous. When Pumpkin first arrived, she was a ghost of a dog—shut down, unsure, and utterly heartbroken. She was 9 months old when we saved her and her sister from a high-kill shelter in LA. They were the tiniest dogs we'd ever seen. They were like real-life stuffed animals. When Pumpkin first arrived, she was only 24 lbs at 9 months old! She was so shut down, avoiding eye contact for the fear of being noticed, and moved like a shadow, silent and scared. But even then, there was a spark in her eyes, a tiny ember of hope. Now, at ruffly 1 y/o, this Malinois mix who had only learned that the world was a scary place is now thriving in her foster home. With time, patience, and the gentle guidance of her foster fur siblings, Pumpkin is learning what it means to feel safe. She’s learning that hands can offer LUV, that voices can be kind, and that not all humans are to be feared. Her progress is nothing short of remarkable—day by day, step by step, she’s beginning to let LUV in. Pumpkin LUVS other dogs. They are her comfort zone. Her role models and her security blankets. A confident canine friend in her furever home will help her continue to blossom. She’s still shy with people, but give her time and space, and she’ll reward you with the most beautiful kind of loyalty and LUV. Pumpkin is ready for a family who sees past her ruff beginning and into the heart of a survivor. Someone who will celebrate the little wins: the first tail wag, the first nuzzle, the first moment she chooses you. She’s not just learning to live. She’s learning to trust. And that makes her story one of the most beautiful we’ve ever told. Pumpkin is looking for a forever home with: -- Another friendly dog (or dogs) to show her the ropes -- A calm, patient environment -- A family that believes in second chances Currently located in San Diego but can be transported to the Bay Area! This is Pumpkin’s redemption story. Want to help her write the next chapter? Fill out an application to meet Pumpkin and your new furever LUV! All Mutt Luv Rescue pups receive a full health checkup, heartworm and parasite testing, are fully vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed/neutered before adoption.

Story
Introducing Roux: A 4-year-old Belgian Malinois mix with a tender heart and soulful eyes that seem to speak straight to your heart.  Roux asks for some patience with getting comfortable in new environments, but once you’re in his circle of trust, you’ll be rewarded with a once-in-a-lifetime bond and a dog whose love feels deeply intentional and profoundly genuine.   One of the most special things about Roux is the way he looks at you—with soft, soulful eyes that project a quiet, true love. He values real connection and forms deep bonds with those he trusts, often gazing up at you as if to check in and make sure you’re together in the moment.   Roux is so extraordinary and beloved that his former shelter volunteers actively seek him out, traveling wherever he is, just for the chance to spend time with this sweet boy, drawn again and again to his gentle soul and the quiet joy he brings to everyone lucky enough to know him.   Inside the home, Roux is the definition of polite. He’s calm, tidy, never destructive, and has impeccable manners. He’ll quietly sit near you with his legs adorably crossed, checking in to see whether it’s cuddle time or independent time.  And if you’re busy? He’ll simply walk away and settle himself. He even sleeps peacefully in his own bed at night and won’t disturb you until you wake, then he’ll greet you with soft eyes and a happy tail.  He listens beautifully and even stops barking the moment he’s asked. Truly, the goodest boy.   Roux thrives with daily activity like walks, enrichment, and lots of play.  Because Roux communicates and explores the world with his mouth (gently, without pressure), he needs a home that understands and respects his communication style. He is ideally looking for the following: &#226&#156&#148&#239&#184&#143Adult-only household &#226&#156&#148&#239&#184&#143Experienced dog owner &#226&#156&#148&#239&#184&#143Willing to be patient with Roux to earn his trust.   Roux gets along well with his canine siblings and loves meeting new dog friends—as with all dogs, with a proper introduction.    Roux will be successful with an adopter who is gentle, patient, kind, and willing to go slow. In return, he’ll give you unwavering companionship, connection, and a love that feels earned and with his whole heart.  If you’re looking for a deeply devoted dog who will adore you once you’ve earned his trust, Roux may be your soul dog.  Interested in meeting him?   Fill out our application and we’ll be in touch: www.tinyurl.com/AdoptMeNow  One Planet Rescue One Planet Rescue is an all-age, all-breed, foster-based rescue organization based in San Jose, CA.February 12, 2026, 2:30 am

Story
Argo is currently in foster care. Here is what his foster family has to say about this handsome guy:Meet Argo, our incredible foster dog from Hitchcock Road Animal Services.Argo is a 3-year-old German Shepherd, and while his coloring may hint at Belgian Malinois, his heart and soul are pure German Shepherd. Loyal, gentle, and deeply loving.Argo is one of those dogs who truly loves being loved. He adores people, leans in for pets, and soaks up every bit of affection he can get. He’s just as wonderful with other dogs and enjoys playful moments with his canine friends. When Argo came to us, he was neglected, malnourished, and frightened of the world around him. He had missed out on so much and didn’t yet know what it meant to feel safe. But with patience, kindness, and a steady routine, everything changed. The scared dog we met no longer exists. In his place is a confident, joyful boy whose personality shines brighter every day. Argo has blossomed into a devoted companion who walks beautifully on a leash, is learning obedience, and is making great progress with crate training. He has a medium energy level and loves his daily walks and playtime. He is potty trained, has good recall when off leash, and most of all, he wants nothing more than to be someone’s loyal best friend.Argo’s journey is a reminder of what love and stability can do. He is ready for a forever home where he can continue to thrive — and give back every ounce of love he’s been waiting to share. To schedule a meet and greet with Argo, please call the HRAS main line at 831-769-8850.

Story
Insights from a shelter dog walk volunteer:Today I met this young German shepherd named Rudy. Today I’m grateful for his unconditional love of humans, his eagerness to connect and have approval, his joy at having a toy to play with, his wondrously huge ears and his even more wondrously deep resilience. He’s thought to be about 8 months old, still a puppy, and it’s clear in his young life he’s had hardships. This youngster is skinny, he has a limp and alarming marks on his muzzle, his coat isn’t in great condition and he smells like he spent too much time without enough clean space and air. And yet he holds no grudges against or apparent fear of people. In fact, when I first caught his gaze as I was walking near his kennel, he looked at me and sat. It was a beautiful, natural, I’m a Very Good Boy sit. And he is.Rudy is very trainable and frankly a joy to be with, observant and curious, soaking up learning and approval and love.Dogs are amazing. I’m grateful Rudy was found and is in our shelter having regular meals, clean water, blankies and toys and people who will take care of him. Imagine the gratitude when he gets adopted! Please share him so he can find his new home soon.Updated Adoption Hourseffective 11/19/25:Tuesday-Saturday1PM-4PM 160 Hitchcock Rd, Salinas, CA Adoption fee:---Included is spay/neuter, microchip and age appropriate core vaccines.
