Meet Socks, the leggy mixed breed. Socks came to the Shelter after her previous guardian was unable to continue caring for her. This energetic gal is needing an active adopter to meet her day to day needs. She can be jumpy and mouthy (especially when excited). These behaviors can be overwhelming for children or people inexperienced with dogs, especially since Socks is a larger sized dog. Socks has attended playgroup at the Shelter and has enjoyed wrestling and running around with other large sized dogs. She can be a tactile player (pawing at the dogs and jumping on them) so any resident dogs should meet at the Shelter prior to adoption to ensure that the dogs jive. Staff have observed that when another dog is present, Socks is less likely to jump and mouth on people. Due to this, a home with a canine companion is highly recommended moving forward. Socks was outdoors previously and should transition to indoor living as she wants to be with people and a part of the family. Adopters should be patient with Socks to help her transition to her adoptive home and learn life skills and manners (like leash walking and potty training). Good news is that Socks is HIGHLY food motivated and super smart so she is up for the challenge of bonding with her new people through learning. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Tioga is a happy, well-adjusted, six-month-old puppy. She is friendly to everyone she meets on two or four feet. She is housebroken and quickly learning basic commands and the rules of the house. While she does have typical puppy behaviors (all unattended shoes beware) and energy, she is generally very well behaved. She sleeps in her crate at night, but doesn't go into it on her own yet. She is mostly oblivious to and unconcerned with her two cat foster siblings. She really loves playing with her three-year-old foster GSD sister. Tioga has minimal prey drive, ignoring squirrels and other animals. She will make a great addition to a home with a dog, but is confident and independent enough to be an only dog. Guten Tag (Hello in German) I am Josie, a very smart, 70 lbs., three-year-old girl, with classic GSD coloring. My fosters have been very patient with me. When they have guests, I love to meet and play with them. I was enrolled in a training program to improve my behavior around other dogs while on walks. I have improved, but still need practice. I understand heel, stay, and sit, the basics of being a good girl. I am working on being a better passenger, learning to relax and not get overly excited. Some of my favorite things are walks, playing with my toys, and napping in the sun. I love when my foster parents say, “Get a toy, Josie, and let’s play.” I run over to my toy box and throw a few out until I find my favorite. I have access to the yard through a doggie door, so my foster parents don’t have to get up to take me out to relieve myself. At night, I am not crated, although I have access to it. I quietly check on my family. I am very good at getting into my crate when they need to go shopping or to other appointments. I just nap and wait for them to return with lots of kisses. My best home would be with active people. I have never been around children, so I cannot say how I might behave. It will be best for me to be the only dog. I am really looking for a committed family because I know I have lots of potential and want an opportunity to prove how loving and wonderful I can be. Scar is a handsome, young, 90+ lb lap dog. He is well-behaved in the house, potty-trained, and can be left alone loose for a few hours (so far). He rides well in the car, barks only occasionally, and only chews on his toys. He has knowledge of the commands: “come”, “sit’, ‘down”, “out”, “leash’, and knows his name. He is enthusiastic and gentle with adults, even strangers. He hasn’t met many children yet. He lives with a 6-year-old foster sister whom he lets push him around in play. We do not know his behavior with cats, but he seems to have a very low prey drive. His foster parents describe him as energetic, affectionate, outgoing, curious, and playful. Scar is: Energy Level 3-Your Basic Shepherd: Needs daily exercise and play time. Some walking/hiking/training, and/or fetch will round out their day and allow them to settle in the evening. Temperament Level 3-Comfortable with most people, may be under-socialized, may have some prey drive, separation anxiety, and/or leash reactivity, and may not be suitable for small children.
