Story
Meet Luna, the 6 month old Belgian Malinois mix. Luna came to the Shelter after her previous guardian was unable to continue caring for her. She lived primarily outdoors with her sister Sassy (who is also up for adoption at the Shelter). Luna and Sassy sometimes get in squabbles over resources like food, toys and treats so we are looking to rehome them separately. Luna has met other dogs at the Shelter (including her new BFF Nico) and enjoyed running around the yard and playing. A home with another dog may be a fit after a meet and greet paired with a slow, thoughtful introduction (especially around fun things like toys and treats). We are not recommending Luna to live in a home with small animals, cats or young children. Adopters for Luna should do some breed research prior to adoption to make sure they are up for the day to day above average mental and physical stimulation that Luna will need to be a good canine citizen. She is still learning life skills and manners (like potty training and leash walking) as well as age appropriate socialization. Adopters should plan to bond with Luna through positive reinforcement based training. Luna`s adoption fee is sponsored by a generous donor. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Meet Pumpkin: From Feral to Fabulous. When Pumpkin first arrived, she was a ghost of a dog—shut down, unsure, and utterly heartbroken. She was 9 months old when we saved her and her sister from a high-kill shelter in LA. They were the tiniest dogs we'd ever seen. They were like real-life stuffed animals. When Pumpkin first arrived, she was only 24 lbs at 9 months old! She was so shut down, avoiding eye contact for the fear of being noticed, and moved like a shadow, silent and scared. But even then, there was a spark in her eyes, a tiny ember of hope. Now, at ruffly 1 y/o, this Malinois mix who had only learned that the world was a scary place is now thriving in her foster home. With time, patience, and the gentle guidance of her foster fur siblings, Pumpkin is learning what it means to feel safe. She’s learning that hands can offer LUV, that voices can be kind, and that not all humans are to be feared. Her progress is nothing short of remarkable—day by day, step by step, she’s beginning to let LUV in. Pumpkin LUVS other dogs. They are her comfort zone. Her role models and her security blankets. A confident canine friend in her furever home will help her continue to blossom. She’s still shy with people, but give her time and space, and she’ll reward you with the most beautiful kind of loyalty and LUV. Pumpkin is ready for a family who sees past her ruff beginning and into the heart of a survivor. Someone who will celebrate the little wins: the first tail wag, the first nuzzle, the first moment she chooses you. She’s not just learning to live. She’s learning to trust. And that makes her story one of the most beautiful we’ve ever told. Pumpkin is looking for a forever home with: -- Another friendly dog (or dogs) to show her the ropes -- A calm, patient environment -- A family that believes in second chances Currently located in San Diego but can be transported to the Bay Area! This is Pumpkin’s redemption story. Want to help her write the next chapter? Fill out an application to meet Pumpkin and your new furever LUV! All Mutt Luv Rescue pups receive a full health checkup, heartworm and parasite testing, are fully vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed/neutered before adoption.

Story
Knox recently left the shelter and went to a foster home. He`s young, and inexperienced, but with support from his foster, he`s learning everything a great dog needs to know to be successful in a fur-ever home! Here`s what foster mom has to say so far: Knox has been in foster for a few days now, and he is learning a lot. He is already doing better with his enthusiastic greetings. We are working on it every day, and I would say he is about 40% better already. He is showing some fear of men, but there are two men in the foster home, so they have been playing with him and spending time with him to help him gain confidence around men. Slowly, Knox is starting to copy the other dogs in the home. He is even beginning to play a little with toys, which is great to see. He is no longer afraid of the car and now jumps right in.He`s working on potty training and leash walking. He`s such a smart boy, we`re sure he`ll be a quick study on both. He already knows how to `sit` and `lay down.`He is not very food-motivated, but the foster is starting to work on training with him. It looks like his previous owner played tug-of-war with him because he is very good at it. The foster is working on “drop it” because he needs to learn some self-control. He is picking up the concept very quickly.Overall, Knox is off to a great start in foster care. If you love Belgian Malinois and are looking for a new furry family member, give us a call to schedule an appointment to meet with Knox:831-769-8873I will continue working with him mostly on life skills. Obedience with these dogs is easy, but teaching them how to be easy to live with is a completely different story. That is where the real work is. ??

Story
Juniper is an 8-month-old Belgian Malinois and possible German Shepherd mix with intelligence, energy, and plenty of personality. She is a typical young Mali-type pup: lively, jumpy, and eager to earn approval. With calm guidance and consistent training, she is already showing how quickly she can learn.*Her Ideal Home*Juniper will do best with an adopter who understands the needs of an intelligent, energetic shepherd-type dog and is ready to continue her education.*A good home for Juniper will provide:-Daily exercise appropriate for a growing dog-Mental enrichment, training games, and opportunities to learn-Consistent routines and clear, kind boundaries-Calm responses to jumping and mouthy behavior-Positive-reinforcement training-A secure environment where she can safely burn energy-Patience while she develops impulse control-Plenty of appropriate chew toys and outlets for her puppy needs-Gradual introductions to new people, places, and experiences-Time and attention rather than long periods of isolation-Juniper will likely thrive with someone who enjoys teaching a dog new skills and can make training part of everyday life. Walks, scent games, food puzzles, obedience practice, and structured play can help her feel fulfilled. She needs a home that will patiently teach her what to do, give her appropriate ways to use her energy, and celebrate her progress. For an adopter who enjoys training and is ready to help a young working-dog mix grow up well, Juniper could be an incredibly rewarding companion.***Dog Adoption fees are half price through August 29th, 2026: Dogs $164- - - Included is spay/neuter, microchip and age appropriate core vaccines. Story
Tioga is a happy, well-adjusted, six-month-old puppy. She is friendly to everyone she meets on two or four feet. She is housebroken and quickly learning basic commands and the rules of the house. While she does have typical puppy behaviors (all unattended shoes beware) and energy, she is generally very well behaved. She sleeps in her crate at night, but doesn't go into it on her own yet. She is mostly oblivious to and unconcerned with her two cat foster siblings. She really loves playing with her three-year-old foster GSD sister. Tioga has minimal prey drive, ignoring squirrels and other animals. She will make a great addition to a home with a dog, but is confident and independent enough to be an only dog. She needs an owner ready and willing to spend the time and energy to help her be her best dog self August 12, 2026, 1:53 pm

Story
Guten Tag (Hello in German) I am Josie, a very smart, 70 lbs., three-year-old girl, with classic GSD coloring.  My fosters have been very patient with me. When they have guests, I love to meet and play with them. I was enrolled in a training program to improve my behavior around other dogs while on walks. I have improved, but still need practice. I understand heel, stay, and sit, the basics of being a good girl. I am working on being a better passenger, learning to relax and not get overly excited. Some of my favorite things are walks, playing with my toys, and napping in the sun. I love when my foster parents say, “Get a toy, Josie, and let’s play.” I run over to my toy box and throw a few out until I find my favorite. I have access to the yard through a doggie door, so my foster parents don’t have to get up to take me out to relieve myself. At night, I am not crated, although I have access to it. I quietly check on my family. I am very good at getting into my crate when they need to go shopping or to other appointments. I just nap and wait for them to return with lots of kisses. My best home would be with active people. I have never been around children, so I cannot say how I might behave. It will be best for me to be the only dog. I am really looking for a committed family because I know I have lots of potential and want an opportunity to prove how loving and wonderful I can be. If I sound like the girl you are looking for, I would love to meet you. You can ask my foster parents any questions you may have about me. I know they will miss me, but we are all excited for me to find my forever family.August 12, 2026, 1:53 pm

Story
Piper is a sweet, 6 month old female who wants all the love and affection. She will crawl into your lap for cuddles if you like. She is also up for a good game of fetch with her favorite stuffie. Piper is on the small size and we're guessing at her heritage. She is learning all her basic manners and being crate trained, and polishing up her house training.    August 12, 2026, 1:53 pm
