Story
Penny is a 12 week old shepherd-mix who has been living it up with her three siblings and three resident dogs (in foster care) for the last two weeks. Penny is a smart, active, and confident girl. Among her siblings, she`s usually the head of the pack, curious and lively. In addition to being extremely clever, Penny is very affectionate and eager to connect. Penny will need daily exercise, potty training, and a regular structure around which she can integrate into her new family. She would love a dog sibling and is untested with cats. *Puppies can be extremely mouthy, and Penny and her siblings are no exception. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Meet Portia, the Belgian Malinois Siberian husky mix. Portia arrived to the Shelter as a stray so we don’t know much about her life before the Shelter. After a day of decompression, she was relaxed and ready to interact with staff and volunteers. Staff have reported that she enjoys sniffing around the exercise yards and then checks in with her person and often getting excited. During her dog to dog interactions, Portia has had a spectrum of reactions – interested in sniffing and then playing with some while taking a bit more time to warm up to others. We suspect that Portia had some limited dog socialization experience prior to arrival at the Shelter so adopters should be patient with her as she settles into the home. High traffic areas like dog parks and beaches may not be good for Portia from the get go. She may enjoy a canine companion in the home provided they meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. Portia has enjoyed digging at the Shelter and finds it enriching. Adopters may want to consider a dig pit (like a big, deep sand box for dogs) to give her safe, appropriate outlet for that behavior. We do not have any history of Portia with cats or children.Portia`s adoption fee has been sponsored by a generous donor! The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. Story
Meet Milo, the German Shepherd. Milo came into the Shelter after his previous guardian was unable to continue caring for him after moving from a ranch to an apartment. Milo primarily lived outdoors in his previous home and has experience around horses, chickens, sheep and other dogs. It took a few days for Milo to warm up at the Shelter but he has been social and amiable after a decompression period. Milo has met a couple of dogs since his arrival at the Shelter and has done well. Another dog in the home may be a fit provided there is a meet and greet at the Shelter prior to adoption as well as a thoughtful introduction in the home. Although Milo has primarily been outdoors, we anticipate he will likely adapt (and ultimately enjoy) being a part of the family with some outdoor lounging on sunny days. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. Story
Meet Pumpkin: From Feral to Fabulous. When Pumpkin first arrived, she was a ghost of a dog—shut down, unsure, and utterly heartbroken. She was 9 months old when we saved her and her sister from a high-kill shelter in LA. They were the tiniest dogs we'd ever seen. They were like real-life stuffed animals. When Pumpkin first arrived, she was only 24 lbs at 9 months old! She was so shut down, avoiding eye contact for the fear of being noticed, and moved like a shadow, silent and scared. But even then, there was a spark in her eyes, a tiny ember of hope. Now, at ruffly 1 y/o, this Malinois mix who had only learned that the world was a scary place is now thriving in her foster home. With time, patience, and the gentle guidance of her foster fur siblings, Pumpkin is learning what it means to feel safe. She’s learning that hands can offer LUV, that voices can be kind, and that not all humans are to be feared. Her progress is nothing short of remarkable—day by day, step by step, she’s beginning to let LUV in. Pumpkin LUVS other dogs. They are her comfort zone. Her role models and her security blankets. A confident canine friend in her furever home will help her continue to blossom. She’s still shy with people, but give her time and space, and she’ll reward you with the most beautiful kind of loyalty and LUV. Pumpkin is ready for a family who sees past her ruff beginning and into the heart of a survivor. Someone who will celebrate the little wins: the first tail wag, the first nuzzle, the first moment she chooses you. She’s not just learning to live. She’s learning to trust. And that makes her story one of the most beautiful we’ve ever told. Pumpkin is looking for a forever home with: -- Another friendly dog (or dogs) to show her the ropes -- A calm, patient environment -- A family that believes in second chances Currently located in San Diego but can be transported to the Bay Area! This is Pumpkin’s redemption story. Want to help her write the next chapter? Fill out an application to meet Pumpkin and your new furever LUV! All Mutt Luv Rescue pups receive a full health checkup, heartworm and parasite testing, are fully vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed/neutered before adoption.

Story
Introducing Roux: A 4-year-old Belgian Malinois mix with an old soul and a loyal heart   Roux asks for some patience with getting comfortable in new environments, but once you’re in his circle of trust, you’ll quickly learn that this dog is pure gold. Inside the home, Roux is the definition of polite. He’s calm, tidy, and has impeccable manners. He’ll quietly sit near you with his legs adorably crossed, checking in to see whether it’s cuddle time or independent time.  And if you’re busy? He’ll simply walk away and settle himself. He even sleeps peacefully in his own bed at night and won’t disturb you until you wake, then he’ll greet you with soft eyes and a happy tail.  He isn’t destructive, listens beautifully, and will stop barking the moment he’s asked. Truly, the goodest boy. Roux thrives with daily activity like walks, enrichment, and lots of play. His absolute favorite activity? Playing keep away with one of his stuffed toys! He even has his own fan club of shelter volunteers who love taking him for walks—his excitement and joy are contagious. A secure yard would be a dream for this boy to stretch his legs and enjoy his playful spirit. Because Roux communicates and explores the world with his mouth (gently, without pressure), he needs a home that understands and respects his communication style. He is ideally looking for the following environment:  &#226&#156&#148&#239&#184&#143Adult-only household  &#226&#156&#148&#239&#184&#143Experienced dog owner &#226&#156&#148&#239&#184&#143Willing to be patient with Roux to earn his trust Roux has successfully lived with an 8 lb chiweenie, a senior corgi mix, and a senior pittie with proper introductions—proof he can absolutely coexist with the right canine companions. Once Roux bonds with you, he becomes deeply affectionate, loyal, and content. You may even find him sitting like a regal sentinel in a chair (his preferred throne), quietly watching over his home and the people he loves. Roux isn’t looking for just any adopter—he’s waiting for his person. Someone gentle, patient, kind, and willing to go slow. In return, he’ll give you unwavering companionship, connection, and a love that feels earned and extra special.  If you’re looking for a deeply devoted dog who will adore you once you’ve earned his trust, Roux might just be your soul dog.  Interested in meeting him? Story
Hi there, my name is  Josie , and I’m searching for my forever family.  I’m a strong two-year-old German Shepherd girl, weighing about 70 pounds, who is mature and wise for my age. My prior living situation was in a large yard with an outdoor shed and very little company. It was a scary, lonely, and uncertain time.  Now, safe in foster care, I’m learning what it means to be part of a family—and I’m blossoming every day. When I first arrived, I wasn’t sure how to live inside a home. I wanted to protect my new place, so I barked at people and dogs passing by the windows. But my foster family has helped me relax, and now I mostly watch with curiosity instead of worry. I love walks and am learning not to pull on the leash. I can still get excited around other dogs, but my wagging tail shows I might just want to play. With a little more training, I know I’ll get even better. I’m housebroken, crate trained, and ride beautifully in the car. At night, I sometimes curl up in my open-door crate, but other times you’ll find me snoozing on the couch. I know my basic commands—sit, down, and come—and I’m eager to learn more since I’m very treat-motivated. I also have great manners: no digging, chewing, or jumping. Playtime is one of my favorite things! I love fetch- I’ll bring the ball back again and again, and when I’m done, I plop my big paw on it to let you know playtime is over. Indoors, I have a toy box, and I always choose my favorite one before I bring it to you. I’ve also visited ranch animals—horses, cattle, geese, and turkeys—and handled myself like a pro. My foster family describes me as affectionate, playful, curious, and eager to please. I love giving kisses and following my people around the house. Since I haven’t lived with other pets, we’re not sure how I’d do sharing a home, but I’m friendly with adults, strangers, and children. At just two years old, I’m ready to grow into the amazing companion I was always meant to be. Could I be the shepherd girl you’ve been looking for? &#226&#156&#168 From outdoor life to family life—Josie is a level 3 dog ready for her happily ever after. &#226&#156&#168September 16, 2025, 2:25 pm

Story
Scar is a handsome, young, 90+ lb lap dog. He is well-behaved in the house, potty-trained, and can be left alone loose for a few hours (so far). He rides well in the car, barks only occasionally, and only chews on his toys. He has knowledge of the commands: “come”, “sit’, ‘down”, “out”, “leash’, and knows his name. He is enthusiastic and gentle with adults, even strangers. He hasn’t met many children yet. He lives with a 6-year-old foster sister whom he lets push him around in play. We do not know his behavior with cats, but he seems to have a very low prey drive. His foster parents describe him as energetic, affectionate, outgoing, curious, and playful. Scar is: Energy Level 3-Your Basic Shepherd: Needs daily exercise and play time. Some walking/hiking/training, and/or fetch will round out their day and allow them to settle in the evening. Temperament Level 3-Comfortable with most people, may be under-socialized, may have some prey drive, separation anxiety, and/or leash reactivity, and may not be suitable for small children. Takes well to training.December 12, 2025, 7:17 pm
