Story
It breaks my heart to make this decision, but I’m looking to rehome my 4-year-old Belgian Malinois. We recently welcomed a new baby into our family and are also in the process of moving. Unfortunately, we no longer have the time or space to give him the exercise, attention, and mental stimulation he truly deserves. He is incredibly friendly, affectionate, and loves people. He has a wonderful personality, but as a Belgian Malinois, he is a very high-energy breed and needs an active owner who can provide daily physical exercise, training, and mental enrichment. He would thrive with someone who enjoys hiking, running, working with dogs, or has experience with active breeds. My only priority is finding him a loving home where he’ll get the time and care he deserves. If you think you’d be a good fit, please reach out and tell me a little about yourself and the home you can provide.

Story
Meet Luna, the 6 month old Belgian Malinois mix. Luna came to the Shelter after her previous guardian was unable to continue caring for her. She lived primarily outdoors with her sister Sassy (who is also up for adoption at the Shelter). Luna and Sassy sometimes get in squabbles over resources like food, toys and treats so we are looking to rehome them separately. Luna has met other dogs at the Shelter (including her new BFF Nico) and enjoyed running around the yard and playing. A home with another dog may be a fit after a meet and greet paired with a slow, thoughtful introduction (especially around fun things like toys and treats). We are not recommending Luna to live in a home with small animals, cats or young children. Adopters for Luna should do some breed research prior to adoption to make sure they are up for the day to day above average mental and physical stimulation that Luna will need to be a good canine citizen. She is still learning life skills and manners (like potty training and leash walking) as well as age appropriate socialization. Adopters should plan to bond with Luna through positive reinforcement based training. Luna is available for pre-adoption. Come meet her, fall in love and take her home after her spay surgery. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

GOOOOOOAAAAAAAAL!Meet the Fifa superstars litter! These Malinois Catahoula mix pups came to the Shelter as a part of an accidental litter. They have previously lived primarily outdoors but are social, soft and ready to learn to be their adopter’s sidekick. Potty training, age appropriate socialization, and leash walking are all on the list of to-do’s for the next adopter. A home with other animals may be a fit with a slow, thoughtful introduction. Any resident dogs should meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. These athletes are ready for pre-adoption. Come meet them, fall in love and take them home after their spay/neuter surgeries.
