Story
Knox recently left the shelter and went to a foster home. He`s young, and inexperienced, but with support from his foster, he`s learning everything a great dog needs to know to be successful in a fur-ever home! Here`s what foster mom has to say so far: Knox has been in foster for a few days now, and he is learning a lot. He is already doing better with his enthusiastic greetings. We are working on it every day, and I would say he is about 40% better already. He is showing some fear of men, but there are two men in the foster home, so they have been playing with him and spending time with him to help him gain confidence around men. Slowly, Knox is starting to copy the other dogs in the home. He is even beginning to play a little with toys, which is great to see. He is no longer afraid of the car and now jumps right in.He`s working on potty training and leash walking. He`s such a smart boy, we`re sure he`ll be a quick study on both. He already knows how to `sit` and `lay down.`He is not very food-motivated, but the foster is starting to work on training with him. It looks like his previous owner played tug-of-war with him because he is very good at it. The foster is working on “drop it” because he needs to learn some self-control. He is picking up the concept very quickly.Overall, Knox is off to a great start in foster care. If you love Belgian Malinois and are looking for a new furry family member, give us a call to schedule an appointment to meet with Knox:831-769-8873I will continue working with him mostly on life skills. Obedience with these dogs is easy, but teaching them how to be easy to live with is a completely different story. That is where the real work is. ??

Story
Meet Luna, the 6 month old Belgian Malinois mix. Luna came to the Shelter after her previous guardian was unable to continue caring for her. She lived primarily outdoors with her sister Sassy (who is also up for adoption at the Shelter). Luna and Sassy sometimes get in squabbles over resources like food, toys and treats so we are looking to rehome them separately. Luna has met other dogs at the Shelter (including her new BFF Nico) and enjoyed running around the yard and playing. A home with another dog may be a fit after a meet and greet paired with a slow, thoughtful introduction (especially around fun things like toys and treats). We are not recommending Luna to live in a home with small animals, cats or young children. Adopters for Luna should do some breed research prior to adoption to make sure they are up for the day to day above average mental and physical stimulation that Luna will need to be a good canine citizen. She is still learning life skills and manners (like potty training and leash walking) as well as age appropriate socialization. Adopters should plan to bond with Luna through positive reinforcement based training. Luna`s adoption fee is sponsored by a generous donor. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Meet Pumpkin: From Feral to Fabulous. When Pumpkin first arrived, she was a ghost of a dog—shut down, unsure, and utterly heartbroken. She was 9 months old when we saved her and her sister from a high-kill shelter in LA. They were the tiniest dogs we'd ever seen. They were like real-life stuffed animals. When Pumpkin first arrived, she was only 24 lbs at 9 months old! She was so shut down, avoiding eye contact for the fear of being noticed, and moved like a shadow, silent and scared. But even then, there was a spark in her eyes, a tiny ember of hope. Now, at ruffly 1 y/o, this Malinois mix who had only learned that the world was a scary place is now thriving in her foster home. With time, patience, and the gentle guidance of her foster fur siblings, Pumpkin is learning what it means to feel safe. She’s learning that hands can offer LUV, that voices can be kind, and that not all humans are to be feared. Her progress is nothing short of remarkable—day by day, step by step, she’s beginning to let LUV in. Pumpkin LUVS other dogs. They are her comfort zone. Her role models and her security blankets. A confident canine friend in her furever home will help her continue to blossom. She’s still shy with people, but give her time and space, and she’ll reward you with the most beautiful kind of loyalty and LUV. Pumpkin is ready for a family who sees past her ruff beginning and into the heart of a survivor. Someone who will celebrate the little wins: the first tail wag, the first nuzzle, the first moment she chooses you. She’s not just learning to live. She’s learning to trust. And that makes her story one of the most beautiful we’ve ever told. Pumpkin is looking for a forever home with: -- Another friendly dog (or dogs) to show her the ropes -- A calm, patient environment -- A family that believes in second chances Currently located in San Diego but can be transported to the Bay Area! This is Pumpkin’s redemption story. Want to help her write the next chapter? Fill out an application to meet Pumpkin and your new furever LUV! All Mutt Luv Rescue pups receive a full health checkup, heartworm and parasite testing, are fully vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed/neutered before adoption.

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Meet Milo! The goofy lovebugMeet Milo! At almost 4 years old and 78 pounds, Milo is a German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois mix who breaks the mold. Instead of being high-energy and constantly on the go, he's an easygoing, affectionate companion who simply wants to be part of your life. Milo enjoys walks, backyard play, and spending time with other dogs, but he doesn't need endless exercise to be happy. He's perfectly content with a relaxed stroll or tagging along on your daily adventures. His favorite "job" is being your loyal sidekick. Friendly and food-motivated, Milo warms up to new people quickly—especially if treats are involved! Beneath his handsome shepherd looks is a total softie who loves to cuddle and has no concept of personal space. He's gentle, sensitive, and deeply devoted to his people. Milo is looking for a home with adults or older children who will include him in everyday life and give him the love, patience, and companionship he thrives on. Milo's ideal home: Adults or a family with older kids or teens No cats or small dogs due to his strong prey drive A family looking for a loyal best friend and constant companion Because of his size and sensitive nature, small children aren't the best fit. If you're looking for a dog who's equal parts goofy, loving, gentle, and devoted, Milo might be the perfect addition to your family. Follow his journey on Instagram @AdoptMilo_SVPP to see this sweet sidekick in action—and then come meet the dog who's ready to become your very best friend.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.August 22, 2026, 2:27 pm
