Meet Finn, the Belgian Malinois! Finn arrived at the Shelter as a stray with a Great Pyrenees friend (aptly named Huckleberry). Finn has been a bit shy but is slowly but surely warming up to new people in the Shelter. Staff have observed that he kennels remarkably well – quite and lounging when all is quite. He has some mild interest in toys and chasing them but ultimately more interested in interacting with people or his friend Huckleberry if they are out together. Finn has met other dogs and has been interested in them. Finn is ready to go to an adoptive home where he can blossom. Adopters should be patient in the transition as he gets to know the new home and people. A home with another dog may be a fit after a meet and greet at the Shelter. Finn could be adopted with his pal Huckleberry but it is not required. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw!Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Meet Pumpkin: From Feral to Fabulous. When Pumpkin first arrived, she was a ghost of a dog—shut down, unsure, and utterly heartbroken. She was 9 months old when we saved her and her sister from a high-kill shelter in LA. They were the tiniest dogs we'd ever seen. They were like real-life stuffed animals. When Pumpkin first arrived, she was only 24 lbs at 9 months old! She was so shut down, avoiding eye contact for the fear of being noticed, and moved like a shadow, silent and scared. But even then, there was a spark in her eyes, a tiny ember of hope. Now, at ruffly 1 y/o, this Malinois mix who had only learned that the world was a scary place is now thriving in her foster home. With time, patience, and the gentle guidance of her foster fur siblings, Pumpkin is learning what it means to feel safe. She’s learning that hands can offer LUV, that voices can be kind, and that not all humans are to be feared. Her progress is nothing short of remarkable—day by day, step by step, she’s beginning to let LUV in. Pumpkin LUVS other dogs. They are her comfort zone. Her role models and her security blankets. A confident canine friend in her furever home will help her continue to blossom. She’s still shy with people, but give her time and space, and she’ll reward you with the most beautiful kind of loyalty and LUV. Pumpkin is ready for a family who sees past her ruff beginning and into the heart of a survivor. Someone who will celebrate the little wins: the first tail wag, the first nuzzle, the first moment she chooses you. She’s not just learning to live. She’s learning to trust. And that makes her story one of the most beautiful we’ve ever told. Introducing Roux: A 4-year-old Belgian Malinois mix with a tender heart and soulful eyes that seem to speak straight to your heart.  Roux asks for some patience with getting comfortable in new environments, but once you’re in his circle of trust, you’ll be rewarded with a once-in-a-lifetime bond and a dog whose love feels deeply intentional and profoundly genuine.   One of the most special things about Roux is the way he looks at you—with soft, soulful eyes that project a quiet, true love. He values real connection and forms deep bonds with those he trusts, often gazing up at you as if to check in and make sure you’re together in the moment.   Roux is so extraordinary and beloved that his former shelter volunteers actively seek him out, traveling wherever he is, just for the chance to spend time with this sweet boy, drawn again and again to his gentle soul and the quiet joy he brings to everyone lucky enough to know him.   Inside the home, Roux is the definition of polite. He’s calm, tidy, never destructive, and has impeccable manners. He’ll quietly sit near you with his legs adorably crossed, checking in to see whether it’s cuddle time or independent time.  And if you’re busy? He’ll simply walk away and settle himself. He even sleeps peacefully in his own bed at night and won’t disturb you until you wake, then he’ll greet you with soft eyes and a happy tail.  He listens beautifully and even stops barking the moment he’s asked. Truly, the goodest boy.   Roux thrives with daily activity like walks, enrichment, and lots of play.  Because Roux communicates and explores the world with his mouth (gently, without pressure), he needs a home that understands and respects his communication style.
