Story
Fiona is one of the kindest souls. She gives soft kisses, gentle hugs and loves to be around her people. She gets along with other dogs and loves puppies and smaller dogs. She is house trained, crate trained and looks forward to her walks! She would love a home with another dog who can help continue to teach her that life is good! She is still working on trusting people, so having treats handy is a must! She goes to doggy day care weekly with one of the foster dogs in her home and continues to improve weekly as she becomes more socialized. She takes treats very gently, knows how to sit, and will make someone a great companion.   This girl deserves a loving home and would do well with kids who can handle her size. We aren't sure of her exact breed, but all full of love.   To meet this lovely girl, go to www.eapl.com and fill out an application. Her adoption fee is $250.     May 1, 2024, 2:01 am

Story
Frosty was named after her frosty face. Found struggling to survive on the bad side of San Antonio Texas. She made an attempt to get help from all surrounding homes near the street she slept and not one person gave her a chance. That was until one of our Texas fosters came across her. She was so hungry she had to be given a slow feeder for the first week of decompression. She is a very old soul extremely loving. She's an older girl in her golden years she not the type to take long extended walks but she will keep you company while you watch a movie. Frosty also enjoys the company of other submissive dogs but would also benefit from being the only pup in your life. Frosty is comfortable with children as well.  ##2006340##

Story
Emma Black Mouth Cur/ American Pitbull Terrier Mix Female 1.5 years old 42 lbs. Meet Emma, a charming pooch full of love and affection! She's an incredibly sweet dog who adores humans of all kinds. Emma is a cuddle enthusiast, always seeking scratches and kisses. She's medium-energy, but equally content to spend the day lounging and recharging with naps. She's the perfect match for those seeking a young, calm and incredibly affectionate dog that adores snuggling, without the challenges of puppyhood. Emma's excitement is palpable—she showcases a happy wiggle butt when greeting you and flashes a toothy smile when she's thrilled. Outdoors, she unleashes her playful side with zoomies, but is also a fan of cozy cuddles and scratches. While she hasn't had extensive training, she's proficient on a leash and is fantastic on both walks and runs. She knows basic commands like “wait”, “sit” and “ok” and is fully house-trained and crate trained. Barking is a rare occurrence for her. Emma is very eager to be where you are, but understands when you need your space. She has great manners and is a tidy eater—no need to worry about any counter surfing with her! Emma prefers the company of humans so she would like to be your one and only pet. But her abundant personality and affection mean that having her as the only pet in your home will be incredibly fulfilling – you won't feel the need for another furry companion! It's important for her to be in a home where she can receive the individual attention and training she needs to manage her interactions with other pets. She's a hit with kids over 8, but her playful energy might be a bit much for younger ones—she's just so excited to play that she might accidentally knock them over! She's also very friendly with new people and just needs a bit of help in managing her excitement. Emma is a playful soul and would adore chew toys, enjoys chasing balls/frisbees, relishes tug-of-war and adores treat puzzles. She shows enthusiasm for food and is trainable, although she's in the process of learning and could benefit from more practice. Emma, the loving canine, seeks a supportive and attentive family to assist her in blooming and experiencing her best life as an adored pet. She looks forward to relishing walks and hikes, embracing the spirit of a true Colorado dog! Please learn more about the adoption process and fill out an application at https://pawsco.org/adopt/adoption-process. We look forward to meeting you!

Story
Hi, I'm Precious! I am a 5 month old Black Mouth Cur mix. I came to the shelter with my 7 other siblings! I'm still a puppy, full of energy and love. I love to play, and I'm always up for a good game. I'm sweet and cuddly, too. I love to curl up in a warm lap and give lots of puppy kisses. I'm a quick learner, too. I'm potty trained as long as I am kept on a good scheuldue. I am also crate trained, so I won't make a mess in your house. I promise to be a good girl and make you proud. I'm just looking for a family to love me as much as I'll love them. Adopting me means gaining a loyal friend who will bring joy, laughter, and love into your life. So, what do you say? Will you be my forever family? If you're interested in adopting me, fill out an adoption application online at www.polkcountyhumanesociety.org/adopt where you will also find a link to request an appointment to meet me. Some pets are in foster homes or may already have an appointment scheduled, so the appointment is important to make sure I will be available to meet you when you come. No need to call to find out about me, you can ask questions on the application or email questions to info@polkcountyhumanesociety.org. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but also makes transports to the Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA and Minneapolis, MN areas twice a month. For potential adopters in those areas, we can do a virtual visit using FaceTime or another app. Just request an appointment using the same link, but note that you want the visit to be virtual and we will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed. For long distance transports, there is an additional $100 fee to cover the cost of the transport ($65) and a health certificate from a veteinarian ($35). Going that last mile home for our sweet pets! ##1946543##

Story
Mojo, an around-6-year old, 50 lb Rhodesian Ridgeback / Lab mix, is a great example of why people love the beauty and sweetness of mixed breed dogs. This breed mix is in the opinion of Texas veterinarians. Farfel's doesn't do DNA testing and therefore can't swear to it.. All we know for certain is that this sweet as can be guy is absolutely irresistible! Can you imagine a dog being safer at an overcrowded high-kill shelter than with his previous owner? Well, that was Mojo's life. This kind and loving guy had an evil owner who enjoyed watching him suffer. He was left chained up just outside the kitchen window so his owner could watch him each day him slowly dying. Mojo was never fed or given water. The only hydration he received was from the rain that accumulated in filthy puddles in the yard. No matter how this starving dog whimpered and cried, he never received food and was on too short a chain to move and fend for himself. For month after painful month, Mojo was forced to lay on hard cement with no shade or roof. He stayed outside, attached to his heavy chain in the heat of the Texas summer, and the cold of winter. Mojo's body was slowly giving up, and he no longer had the energy to stand. Neighbors started noticing Mojo, unable to move in the filthy yard, and asked the owner to relinquish him to the authorities. Sadly he refused. He told the neighbors that the dog would be dead soon anyway. It wasn't until the authorities intervened that Mojo was thankfully confiscated and removed from the property. A cruelty case was filed against the previous owner. (The picture of skinny Mojo laying on the ground was taken by the neighbor and given to the police). Even though the shelter was nursing Mojo back to health, with abuse cases coming into the shelter every day, Mojo was placed on the euthanasia list due to lack of space. This brave boy has fought so hard to live for so long that Farfel's Rescue just couldn't turn our backs on him. We spoke up to save Mojo's life and he's now safe and sound and has made his way to Colorado. Mojo now sleeps in his foster moms bed at night, and is happier than ever, and hoping to find his forever home soon. Notes from Mojo's Texas foster, and his Colorado foster: * * * * From Texas foster: "The first time I met Mojo at the shelter, we weren't allowed to video or take pictures because he was a cruelty case still pending, however, we couldn't help falling deeply in love the minute we met him. Poor Mojo wagged and loved us up from the very first moment. Our hearts broke because he's such a sweet boy who is sooo skinny and still so hungry. Mojo was a staff favorite and whenever the employees or volunteers were at the shelter, they took this sweetie from his tiny cage, brought him to the office and loved him up! I then took him home to foster and what a good boy. He was so relieved to be in a home that he fell asleep as soon as we got home. Once he started warming up and realizing he was safe, he showed just how much personality he has!!" From Mojo's Colorado foster: "Oh Mojo is a hoot! He is so happy and friendly and social, and you wouldn't even know he's 6 years old, because he acts like he's maybe 2 or 3! He LOVES toys and playing. This boy never got to be a real dog until now, so he is living it up. He is very active and very playful. He would do great with an active adopter who has time to train him some basic skills. He is very cuddly when he does settle down, and sleeps in bed with me. While he is good with dogs off leash and in the home, he has some on leash sensitivity where he barks if he sees another dog. I think he just doesn't know how to contain his excitement. He responds very well to a treat distraction, and is VERY VERY VERY food motivated! He met two kids on a walk yesterday, they were 7 & 9 and he was so sweet with them. He would do well in a home with kids, as long as they know he is not so gentle when taking treats from your hand! He was denied food for a long time, so he inhales it when he gets it! He is potty trained!! " * * * * Our wonderful boy has a cute little smirk. When he was vetted, the vet felt that his smile is just a tad crooked, and that this was most likely caused by a kick to the face by his cruel previous "owner". (Nothing was needed, as he is not in pain and nothing is broken). Whatever it is, it gives him the cutest little smile. When Mojo was vetted and vaccinated, a heart worm test was given that came out positive...not at all surprising for a dog that lived under these awful conditions. Farfel's has already started Mojo's treatment, and will cover all costs for treatment to make this wonderful dog heart worm negative. The only thing we ask of our adopter is to keep Mojo from being too active (a great bonding time) while he goes through the treatment process which consists of several vet visits with injections over a period of sixty days. Farfel's has never had a dog treated for heart worm that didn't ultimately result in a negative heart worm outcome. Mojo is not yet neutered, but we do cover the full cost of his neuter at our vet. (Neuter is required to finalize any adoption). Mojo is available for adoption now. Applications are currently being accepted for this sweet and very loving best friend and can be found at http://farfels.com/farfels-res. cue/adoption-form/. If interested, please fill out completely and submit. **PLEASE NOTE** If you're truly interested in adopting from us, please be sure to fill out our Farfel's Rescue adoption application found at the link above or at farfels.com.
