Story

Ginny is a very sweet girl. She was at a shelter and was a having a tough a time getting acclimated and was sadly getting close to euthanasia. After spending sometime with her and bringing my family around her we realized she just needed another chance. Ginny loves to play and loves her cuddles. She loves to be a part of your day. My wife says she just follows her around and loves to put her head or her lap anytime she can. She listens very well and has had some time around other dogs as well as cats. She does well with both. She shows interest in the cats but nothing more than a look. As for other dogs she loves to play and be part of the action. She sleeps with my daughter every night and does excellent with our 2 children. Another example of a dog put into 23 hours a day of isolation that just needed a chance. I adopted Ginny with the mindset of saving her life and finding her a forever home. Which she greatly deserves!!

Meet Picasso, the handsome brindle pitbull mix. Picasso arrived to the Shelter as a stray so we don’t know about his life before the Shelter. It took a few days for Picasso to warm up but slowly, but surely – he started to befriend staff members. He went from quiet and reserve to more engaging – galloping around the exercise yards and even sometimes sitting on a chair on his own. Picasso has met some dogs at the Shelter and greets in a fairly forward manner. He is interested in interacting but sometimes his hormones get the best of him (resulting in some humping). Any resident dogs should meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. Picasso may not be every dog’s cup of tea due to the mounting behavior. Adopters should avoid high traffic dog areas and prioritize decompression after adoption before Picasso meets a bunch of new pups. We do not have any history of Picasso with children or other animals. Picasso is available for pre-adoption. Come meet him, fall in love and take him home after his neuter surgery. Picasso`s adoption has been sponsored by a generous donor!The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw!Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Meet Dom, an 8-year-old, approximately 65-pound sweetheart looking for a home of his own. Please call us at 831-769-8850 to request a meeting Dom came to our shelter on May 5, 2026, after his owner passed away and no friends or family were able to take him in. He spent well over a month in our care while receiving treatment for skin issues before he was ready for adoption. Shelter life was difficult for him, and he wasn’t doing well. Then Dom got the chance he needed: a foster home. He’s been with his foster for a couple of months now and is thriving. With good care and proper nutrition, his skin has cleared up. He’s settling into home life and showing us the sweet, easygoing dog he is and has always been. His foster describes Dom as a “go with the flow” kind of guy at home. He settles quickly and naps peacefully while his person is at work, but he’s always ready to join them for a walk or an adventure. Dom is house-trained, eager to please, and quick to learn. He knows “sit” and “paw” and is working on “stay” and “down.” He isn’t crate-trained, but he has free range of the home without accidents or destructive behavior.Dom loves toys and likes to collect them in a pile. When it’s time to relax, he’s happiest tucked under a blanket. He’s adorable and entertaining, and his foster shares new clips of him almost daily on Instagram at @luluslegacyfosters.Outside the home, Dom can become overwhelmed and excited around other animals, so introductions and a thoughtful match are important. He does best with friendly dogs around his size and isn’t a match for small dogs or cats.
