Story
Meet Toby! Toby is an eight-year-old Chihuahua and Mini Pin mix who weighs 10 pounds. If you are looking for a shadow who will do the best happy dance when you come home, Toby is your guy... If you are willing to let him warm up to you at his own pace and use positive training methods with him. He is pretty sensitive and fearful of new situations. Toby is a curious little guy who thoroughly sniffed out his new foster Mom's home. :-) He is wary of humans and dogs and needs time to warm up to you and other animals. Toby has taken quite well to his foster parents and especially loves his foster dad. In less than a week he started to play and wiggle his bum when he saw the adults. Toby will snuggle tons but he needs time and patience before he will let you pick him up. He is especially not fond of it if there are other dogs around or something he is wary of, like the stairs. We are practicing saying "UP" when we pick up so he gets used to the cue and knows why we are reaching for him. A month in and when he wants to get up he walks towards you but when you reach out he moves back, lol. He will do this a few times all the while whining that he isn’t being picked up! Toby will only crate when you aren't in the room, so he snuggles with his foster Dad in bed overnights. He does well in the crate when he is left home alone. Toby is potty trained and has only had accidents when foster Mom is hyper focusing on work and misses a potty break. He did some marking when he first arrived but that stopped after he got settled. Toby is a playful and loving guy! He adores his foster Dad especially but will hang out with, kiss, and play with his foster Mom too. He wants to be with his human all the time. If there is a bed on the floor he is happy to be there, but if another dog is in the room he prefers your lap. Toby has shown food resource guarding. He will bite/nip when guarding and will need an adopter willing to use positive reinforcement to work through this. - UPDATE: It has been a month since Toby came to his foster home on 10/10. He is no longer fearful of us, the dogs, or guarding with the adults. Toby does not play with the other dogs in foster who are all bigger than him. He does warm up after about a month or so and tolerates them all around him. He will even attempt to mount them sometimes but he doesn’t want them attempting any play with him as of yet. . . . Story
Meet adorable Perla! Please read her entire post before reaching out to the shelter. This adorable little 5lb girl is afraid of new people and she will snap if she is pushed too quickly to interact with new people. Perla is a great little friend when she is comfortable with people, but it takes multiple interactions for her to come out of her shell. Once your are her friend, she is the happiest little dog. Perla came to the shelter because her owner was undergoing treatment for cancer, and was no longer healthy enough to care for her. She will need an adopter who can come to the shelter multiple times to visit her during the week, and with the patience to be able to sit with her and allow her to approach without being pushed, called to, or petted too quickly.Perla is looking for a patient, local adopter with a quiet home and ability to take her for walks, as she is very active! She is looking for an adult home with no children, or a home that can find a safe spot for her to be when unfamiliar children visit.Perla may be able to live with another small dog that enjoys an energetic friend, as she is very busy! This little chihuahua does love to cuddle but only with folks who have the patience to understand her fear of strangers, and move very slowly. Perla would thrive in a quieter environment without having to be around lots of new people. Perla may be able to live with another small dog who doesn't mind her running around and jumping on them. She has made friends with another small dog at the shelter, and loves curling up with her to sleep. If you are interested in adopting Perla, please visit worcesterarl.org to fill out the Dog Adoption Inquiry to request a meet with her. We are looking for local adopters, because she will need multiple, consecutive meets in person at the shelter before she will be comfortable going home.

Story
Nessie is a very sweet girl. She loves to go for walks and enjoys soaking up the sun during nice weather. Nessie is looking for a quiet home where she can be the center of attention. We have learned that this chihuahua would prefer to live with a woman, and does not care for men. Nessie loves who she loves, and does not care for new people reaching for, or trying to pet her. Nessie does bond strongly with her person, and is a wonderful companion for the right home. Nessie enjoys moving at a slow pace and meeting people that understand it takes time to get to know each other. An adult home only will be best for this little sweetheart. If you are viewing this dog's profile on Adopt-a-Pet and are interested in adopting, please head to our official website at www.worcesterarl.org to fill out a Dog Adoption Inquiry Form, which will be located under the dog's profile. All adoptions are by appointment, thank you.

Story
Meet Odie and Bama! They are a bonded pair of what appear to be Papillon mixes. We estimate Odie to be around 8 years old and 9 pounds and Bama could be closer to 11+ years old and 6 pounds.Bama and Odie are currently in a foster home in Boston where they are enjoying quiet apartment life. They are not barky, are fine with other dogs, and friendly with people. They were out with the fosters family for Thanksgiving and did great with new people and ignored the other dogs. In their foster home they are working on house-training. Their foster takes them out every 2-3 hours and whenever they wake up from a nap to help with house-training. Odie walks on leash, but does not like to be pulled around. Bama does not walk on leash and would like time in a fenced in area each day (empty dog park or fenced-in yard). Bama and Odie spend their days cuddling up together in sunny spots, on the couch, or in your lap. They share attention fine and don't fight with each other. At night, they sleep in a crate together. Bama likes to putter around the house like the old man he is, and Odie enjoys soliciting pets and attention from his person. When Bama wants attention, he looks at you longingly until you pick him up because he cannot jump up. These precious boys are looking for a forever home or apartment together with a quiet person or couple. As senior dogs, they will need someone who understands that they are in their golden years, particularly Bama, and require a little extra TLC (sweaters when it's cold, help up into your lap, special wet food, calm and loving energy). They should not go to a home with small children or anyone who is a fall risk given they need a gentle touch and can be tripped over. Medical: Odie and Bama have both received dentals and had multiple teeth pulled. Bama is getting additional surgery for a nasal fistula. Bama has a heart murmur but X-rays show his heart is within normal size margins and is not uncommon for a dog of his assumed age. Bama needs to gain weight and is fed 3-4 times daily. Bama is on the frail side, but still has a good quality of life. Odie is in good shape. They are available for adoption with an approved adopter in Boston or Hopkinton by appointment. Please fill out an application on our website at https://www.browndogcoalition.com/adoptable as a first step.- Please thoughtfully discuss with your entire household the physical, financial, and emotional responsibilities of a puppy/dog BEFORE applying to adopt.- Puppies/dogs may not be given as gifts or surprises.- More information about our adoption process, application and adoption fee can be found at browndogcoalition.com
