But, the feeling was not mutual, at all. He was afraid and confused - why was he suddenly among strange people and other tiny dogs. But, it was those other tiny dogs that got Pesto to relax and want to eventually meet us.Now, if you are sitting in his room with him, he will dash to his gate to see who is out and then dash to your lap, standing on your legs as if he was on an island.Pesto is an example of how going slow gives the biggest rewards. I’ve had her since she was about 6mths. She’s an old lady now (16) and needs more attention than I can give. She is house trained but her age is making it difficult for her to hold it and she needs to go out constantly. She’s still active as she runs around with the cats I have. She’s stays hungry and thirsty for some reason. She’s a great lap dog and loves to be rubbed. I would like a pet lover to get her to handle her with care for the rest of her days!

Meet Kallen !! **Recently neutered, adoption radius extended** This little guy is a lot of fun and loves everyone. A happy boy for sure. Very friendly and outgoing. He would be a great dog for someone wanting to go on outings or adventures but is also happy to just be your bestie at home. Kallen is a Male, approx. 4 year old, Chihuahua mix best guess but he doesn’t really act like a chi at all. He weighs 13.7 pounds and is full grown. He is neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccines. He is Heartworm negative and on preventatives. Kallen ended up at the shelter after he was found as a stray. He had part of a tie out line still attached to his collar. He’s been nothing but happy and grateful since we took him from the shelter. He is fostered with many other dogs of all ages and sizes including other unfixed males. He does great with all of them but would also be fine without another dog. He enjoys running the yard with the other dogs. He was a big humper of dogs (male and female) but his recent neuter already has reduced that a lot in just a few days. He recently met cats and after learning about cat claws once he decided to cohabitate peacefully lol. He was never aggressive toward them just tried to play which they didn’t appreciate. He met a few kids so far and did really well with them. He does do a lot of jumping up on people so that should be considered with small kids. He needs to be with kids old enough to not treat him like a toy. Kallen is great in the car. He also does well with the leash but pulls some when excited. He’s crate trained and goes in when asked. He’s fine crated for a full work day. He can be a bit vocal in the crate but mostly when he sees you doing things with other dogs and wants to be a part of it. He’s done well with potty training but still has some accidents when he’s anxious. He has a medium energy level. He has a spunky side and loves to run around. He’s easily excitable and fun. He also has no trouble being crated all day while you’re at work. As long as he gets that energy and excitement out he can relax and chill. He loves to be right with you or sit on your lap but isn’t really a lapdog. He’s more fun and active and ready for adventures. After he gets his energy out he is much more relaxed. Kallen so far has not shown any food, toy or treat aggression toward people or other dogs. He currently eats in his crate. He’s very treat motivated and takes treats gently. He loves to pal around with you while you do yard work or anything you’re doing. He was a good boy at the vet. He does very well with strangers and seems to be happy wherever he is and whoever he is with. If you are looking for a fun, loving and happy smaller guy then he may be the one! Meet Sara !! This sweet small little lady was part of a large hoarding situation. She has come a long way in a short time and is embracing the good life! She is ready to find a real family of her own. Sara is an approx. 6 year old female and appears to be a Chihuahua mix. She currently weighs 10.7 pounds and is full grown. She will be spayed, microchipped and up to date on her vaccines as part of her adoption. She is heartworm negative and on preventatives. This sweet girl came to us so scared and shy but she has quickly decided that her new life is not so scary. She is turning into a fun happy dog. She is also doing very well with all of her training. Sara has been around other dogs of all sizes. She seems to want to run and play with them but if they start barking she gets scared. That will likely pass as she becomes more settled. We are unsure how she would do with cats. She has not been fostered with kids but met a few and did fine. She will need to be with kids that dont treat her like a toy and give her some time to warm up to them. She has been doing really well with her potty training. She has no accidents in her crate and will alert you when she needs to go out. She has done great with car rides and does well on the leash. She is crate trained but can be vocal when she needs to potty or thinks she is missing out on some fun going on in the house. Sara has a medium energy level so far. She has some spunky moments and has a playful side. She also likes to lay on the couch and relax. She is a good mix of fun and relaxed. She has had no trouble sharing food, treats or toys with other humans. She has growled at other dogs around her food bowl. That is not uncommon when dogs come from hoarding situations with limited food. It may go away and it may not. Feeding her separate from other dogs is an easy solution. She was very well behaved for the vet. She has also done well with nail trims and baths. Her foster family says; Sara is extremely loving and fun. With a safe place and a routine she is going to make someone a perfect dog. She is definitely not your typical scared chihuahua. Meet Grapefruit !! This small shy girl is our longest resident ever. She’s been through a lot but still wants to love. Sadly no one has been willing to accept her fear and allow her time to feel safe and acclimate. She came from an awful hoarding situation where the dogs were inbreeding and without food, water, heat etc for a long time. She is the last one left of 24 and we want so badly for her to be chosen and get a safe loving forever home. Grapefruit is approx. 4 years old. She is a Chihuahua mix best guess. She weighs 12 Pounds and is full grown. She is spayed, up to date on vaccines and microchipped. She is heartworm negative and on monthly preventions. She takes a long time to trust you but then she is a clingy Velcro dog. You must be willing to let her process a new home filled with new people, sounds, and smells. This can take weeks. When she feels safe, she turns into your shadow but it takes time. It’s a slow process of building trust with a dog that’s been neglected like this. Things like noises outside and the TV can scare her still. She will hide for the first week or two at least. She will need to go outside on secure leashing as she can be an escape risk until she trusts you. Once she trusts you she does well off leash in a securely fenced yard. She has done well with other dogs after she sees they are safe. She is not fostered with cats so we do not know how she will do but we suspect she would do fine. She has been exposed to pet bunnies and has not shown any prey drive or issues around them. She is not fostered with kids but we think she would do well with calmer older kids. She will need kids and adults in the home to be willing to give her space and time to adjust to them and feel safe. As with any dog she would need any children in the house to be respectful and not treat her like a toy. Grapefruit had clearly never been on a leash before and was terrified of it at first. She still gets scared of things at times that can make her try to run away so a secure harness or collar is needed. She has done very well on car rides and does not get sick. She can be crated but also does well left in a room. She’s not destructive. Once she is settled and feels safe in your home she does great with potty training. She really prefers to potty outside. When she is learning to trust you she has to go out leashed at all times. She will be nervous and scared and may not feel safe to potty right away. As the fear fades she returns back to being fully potty trained. During the initial acclimation she may have accidents inside. Grapefruit has shown no issues sharing food, treats or toys with humans or other dogs. She takes treats gently. She is overall a very sweet gentle dog. She has a low energy level but once she is settled in a new place she has moments of spunky energy here and there but nothing hard to manage at all. Grapefruit has done so well in her foster home it just took some time. We know she can thrive in a home we just need someone willing to give her a real shot at it. So far no one has given her a fair chance or enough time to feel safe and settle in. We hope someone will take a chance on a dog that truly needs and deserves a good home. ***Do not apply to adopt a dog like this if you’re not serious about giving them time to adjust. It’s absolutely unfair to expect her to adjust in a few days. If you are not going to give her a month or longer to fully settle then do not apply. Some dogs choose their person. And Grant? Well, Grant has a definite soft spot for the gentlemen. He adores his foster mom, but let a kind man with a gentle voice, a soft hand, and (bonus points!) no ball cap come along, and you just might witness the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Once Grant decides you're his guy, prepare to be adored.Grant is a 3½-year-old Chihuahua/Feist mix weighing just 19 pounds, and his story is one of those reminders of just how resilient and forgiving dogs can be. He came from a home with 15 dogs, none altered, living in very poor conditions. Animal Control stepped in, and Critter Cavalry Rescue was called to help some of the little dogs find safety and a chance at a better life. Grant was one of those lucky souls. And look at him now!Over the past several months, Grant has blossomed in ways that make his foster family so proud. He enjoys going for walks, riding in the car, and even attending Puppy Yoga classes at the YMCA. He quietly joins the fun, welcomes gentle attention, and has made new human and canine friends along the way. He gets along with other dogs and usually has a special buddy in his foster home.Grant also has a few adorable little quirks that make him all the more lovable. He is a world-class blanket snuggler and loves finding the coziest place to curl up. But don't be surprised to find him perched on a sofa, chair, bed, or even somewhere a little unexpected! Grant believes the best view in the house is from somewhere above floor level.What Grant really dreams of, though, is a special man of his own. A retired or younger senior gentleman might be a wonderful match, but age isn't nearly as important as having a kind heart and the desire for a loyal little companion. And ladies, don't worry! A wife or girlfriend is absolutely welcome. Grant is simply hoping his favorite guy will be there to share his heart and his days.There is something incredibly special about earning the trust and love of a dog like Grant.
