Story
Meet Callie. This adorable puppy has already had a few homes. She was originally given away with her mom and siblings to a Good Samaritan who tried to help them find loving homes. Unfortunately, Callie was given to a family unequipped to care for her. They grew frustrated with her and didn't understand her unusual behaviors or take her to the vet for further diagnosis. Callie was subdued for a puppy and showed some neurological signs like circling, which is consistent with a condition called hydrocephalus. Thankfully, they surrendered her and we got her the medical care she needed. A dog with hydrocephalus has an excess of cerebrospinal fluid that has leaked inside their skull, which causes brain swelling and is often called “water on the brain.” The severity of the condition varies from dog to dog. Common symptoms include having a rounded or dome-shaped skull, walking in circles or having stability issues, difficulty learning, and seizures. Some dogs are asymptomatic.  Dogs with mild or moderate cases can live a normal healthy, happy life by taking medication, and some even do well without treatment. Callie has been seen by a neurologist twice and was started on medications to address the swelling and thwart potential seizures, and she’s responding well. Callie is being fostered by Debbie and her teen son, living with two other dogs. She loves being part of a pack and gains confidence from the other pups. Callie was born with limited vision but it’s the only way she’s ever known. She has learned her foster home environment and is very comfortable once she’s familiar.  She knows where the stairs are and stays away. She stays on the main level near her foster mom during the day and sleeps next to her bed at night. Once she’s confident in her surroundings, her playful personality emerges and she acts like a normal silly pup. Callie is crate-trained, and potty training is still a work in progress and may take a little longer. She can hold it overnight and does not have accidents in her crate. She uses potty pads as a backup inside but typically goes in the yard when she’s out. She enjoys hanging out in the backyard with Debbie and her best buddy, Lily, a large cattle dog she likes to follow around and snuggle with. She’s getting more comfortable on leash and enjoys short walks once she knows the terrain. Understandably she is sometimes hesitant in unfamiliar environments. Debbie shared this update: “Callie can be quite an emotional support dog in some ways. She loves snuggling and will nap and cuddle with me on the couch. Sometimes when she's on the go she's more interested in being active and exploring...which is a good thing. She's good with humans as long as nothing is sudden. Slow introductions and no loud noises keep her calm. A quieter household would make her feel more secure than an active one for sure. She loves food and peanut butter is her favorite treat. She'll bark when it's time to eat and will not let me forget. But she doesn't bark much other than that. She is most playful after she eats in the morning and evening. She likes toys, but mainly ones she can chew on because she can't see them to chase. She will jump and play with Lilly (while Lilly just lets her). It's the cutest when she trots around because I love seeing her confident. She’s been doing really well on her medication and the amount of time she walks in circles has been a LOT less lately. She really is a good dog, and while finding the right adopter might take longer, they will be rewarded with an enjoyable, fun, sweet, vulnerable little bundle of curiosity and love. She needs a little extra care, but not much.” While Callie’s underlying hydrocephalus is unlikely to resolve, if she continues to respond well to her medication, she could do very well. She’s still very young and we are hopeful. We are looking for an attentive, quiet home for this Callie. Another established dog in the home would be ideal and a fenced yard with easy access is preferred.  Apply today to learn more! Story
Meet Erin. Erin was rescued with her mom and siblings from a heartbreaking scenario in Chester, SC. Their owner, grappling with the loss of her husband to deportation and facing severe flooding on her property due to excessive rain, found herself unable to care for her pets. Sadly, the dogs were being kept outside in a pen that became submerged in water and debris, The owner called Animal Control for help and 9 dogs were removed from the property.  With local shelters already overwhelmed, multiple rescues stepped up to help and Worthy Dog took Erin and her sister, Kira, into our care. Both pups have settled into their foster homes where they are experiencing the comforts of home for the first time. From cozy beds and nourishing meals to daily walks and human companionship, these girls are fully embracing home life. The pups are only about 7-8 months old and are adapting quickly. They are quickly learning new skills like navigating stairs, mastering crate and house training, and reveling in the delights of toys — simple pleasures they had never experienced before. Erin is being fostered in a home with her foster mom, Cari, and three small pups. She has done amazing with training and we’ve learned how smart and motivated she is. Like all puppies, she has spikes of energy and playfulness, but she does very well with structure and direction. We checked in with her foster mom, Carrie, for an update: FOSTER MOM UPDATE - 3/15/24 “After only two weeks, she fully understands the ‘sit’ and ‘wait’ commands, and we are working on the ‘down’ command. She goes quietly into her crate every time, and has started to voluntarily go in to take naps, and will lay in there quietly while I’m working/on calls. She has really learned that crate = relaxation and downtime, not punishment and me leaving. She’s improving with her potty training too. She understands that she should potty outside and has a favorite spot, but will sneak off and go inside if you’re not paying attention. Considering her age and having zero prior training, she’s way ahead of what I would expect. When she first arrived, I noticed she was protective of her food and space around the other dogs when I fed her in the crate. We made some adjustments and I stopped feeding meals and high-value treats in the crate and she stopped protecting the area. I started making her sit for her food bowl and not releasing her until it touched the floor. I also practiced touching her and interrupting her meals to make her sit again to have her food back. I also would like to stress that the aggression was never once directed at me. This has worked wonders and she can now eat with my dogs near her dish and she doesn't react at all. I think it was just a reaction from being housed with so many other dogs and having to battle it out for meals. She’s young and quickly worked through it. Erin has started to find her voice and will bark at my pups if they’re not playing with her. She loves to go and do. I took her on a little hike at Lake Norman and not only does she love a hike, but she was such a brave girl and got into the water! We also went hiking with a couple of friends and their big dogs. She was nervous at first about their size but warmed up really fast and was leading the pack by the end.  She loves to hide her favorite toys in random places - in blankets, behind pillows, behind the blinds, and, my least favorite, in the water bowl. ‍&#226&#153&#128&#239&#184&#143 Overall I think Erin leans more toward the submissive side and is very much a people-pleaser. She takes correction extremely well from both me and my dogs. For her age, she is a great balance of fun, playful, and full of zoomies but then will settle down and take a nap on her own. She can be a bit silly as well. She's also pretty brave. We joke that she's really into parkour because she will jump from one end of the couch to the other, to the ottoman, off the side of the couch, run into the other room, back, and repeat lol. She's not lacking it's personality and her family will have so many laughs and fun times with her. Erin’s favorite things include quality time with her people and adventure. She loves to snuggle with her human on the couch after a big outing or some playtime. I think as long as she has these 2 things, she will be a very happy girl. She is also an absolute HOARDER not just with toys, but anything left on the floor. No sock, shoe, or slipper is safe, but surprisingly she hasn’t been destructive with them. She just likes to have them This girl needs an owner with an active lifestyle. I wouldn’t place her with young kids because she is excitable and does the playful pupping nipping/mouthing and has sharp teeth. She's been great with dogs of all sizes and would love a playmate to entertain her, but I think she could also be ok as an only dog for an active family. She has been able to learn independence way better than expected given her background. I think Erin could be a great candidate for somebody's first dog because of her personality and trainability. She really is one of the best puppies I've fostered. Coming from her situation, I was expecting a dog who would struggle to be alone and would be a little trickier to do basic training with, but she surpassed every single one of my expectations. She brings me so much happiness and so, so many laughs. I can't wait to see her as the center of somebody's world and she absolutely deserves to be that. She is going to bring soooo much joy to her future family!” ****** Need a little puppy fun in your life? Erin is your girl. Kira is being fostered in a home with a foster mom and dad, and multiple dogs, both small and large. She’s done well with all and would LOVE a playmate in her new home. Her foster family has been working on crate training, housetraining, and leash skills and she learns quickly. We checked in with her foster mom, Jenn, for an update. FOSTER MOM UDPATE: 3/15/24 “Kira is a spunky, cute, and affectionate girl who is friendly with all.  Her face always has a permanent smile and her tail is always wagging. She is a medium-energy dog who loves to do zoomies in the yard and play with toys, but will also cuddle up on a bed, blanket, or your lap for nap time. Just watching her makes you smile because she seems so happy with life.  She enjoys the outdoors and has a passion for sticks. She sleeps in a pen with her foster brother, Biscuit, and has had no accidents in the pen. She is doing well with potty training and has only had a few accidents here and there. I have left her loose in the house during the day for up to an hour so far with nothing destroyed. Inside, the only things she seems drawn to outside of her toys are socks and slippers.  Kira will engage with our dogs and wants to play but is respectful of them if they just want to walk around. She does well on leash and we have started walking every day to get her comfortable. She doesn’t love the car and may pant after a longer drive, but she’s calm in the car. and just needs more exposure. Overall she is a joy and we love having her!” ****** Need a little puppy fun in your life? Kira is your girl. She's done great with training and will make a wonderful pup companion and pack member.
