I love walks, playing fetch, tug-of-war, laying in the sun, and love car rides. I’m not a fan of bikes, skateboards, scooters or motorcycles. But, with the frequent offsite visits with volunteers they are teaching me that these things won’t hurt me and I know within time with your training, love and knowing I feel secure with you, I will adapt to these things. I’m also feeling quite comfortable going into stores and restaurants and I’ve made several friends in the places I’ve visited. I prefer to be the only dog and only pet in the home. MEET SWEET DARLA! Darla is a beautiful and gentle almost 9-year-old purebred Doberman Pinscher. (Purebred verified by DNA testing). She is elegant, pretty and very affectionate -- and she gets along well with most other dogs. Darla was rescued from a crowded California shelter awhile back. At that point she had a lump on her underside, but it turned out that it was just a (benign) fatty tumor - common and harmless. She has since had several cancer screenings to make sure she is in good health. She does have some irregularities of rhythm in her heart, and so currently sees a cardiologist every six months. But that doesn't stop her and right now she is a happy, loving, beautiful girl, just waiting patiently for her forever home. She is a well-behaved and strong girl, who will pull when she sees squirrels on a walk! She gets along with male dogs but will likely thrive as the only dog in a home. She is a gem and waiting patiently! Darla weighs about 69 lbs. She is currently in California but can be transported to Colorado. Please email for an application.

Update 9/9: Samson has been enjoying his time in foster to decompress! His favorite activities have been sunbathing and rolling around with a toy. He did well meeting another dog!Samson’s stress has been increasing lately in shelter and we are looking for an urgent foster, adopter, or rescue! He`s been seen circling in the kennel, pacing, panting excessively, and seeming generally more frantic than we`ve seen him. :( Samson does great playing with other dogs, but unfortunately does not have this outlet right now due to a recurring limp that has been tricky to heal in shelter. He has done well meeting people/ here and will sit and present his paw for treats, but was reported to be a bit more nervous in a previous home. Update 9/14: While Rumi has been quite friendly at the shelter, he has struggled with meeting or encountering new people in several adoptive homes. He would love a home with someone who can offer support or advocate for Rumi`s space when needed. If you are interested in Rumi, feel free to email us for more behavior information at animal.care@ventura.org or just come meet him at the shelter!Rumi has been an absolute gentleman at the vet, has met other dogs successfully, and is so much fun! This is what one of our veterinarians had to say about him: `Rumi is a sweet, affectionate boy who enjoys spending time with his people. He happily leans in for pets, takes treats gently, and has done well with handling and grooming. He also enjoys running around the yard and has done well playing with other social, energetic dogs. Like many young dogs, Rumi is still working on his manners. He can be enthusiastic on leash and would benefit from continued positive reinforcement training to help him develop good leash skills and basic cues. His previous owner also reported that he escaped through open doors on several occasions, so he`ll need a home that is mindful about keeping doors and gates secure.With love, consistency, and opportunities to play and explore, Rumi will make a fun and loyal companion.` @vcanimalservices Two surgeries later, Rumi and his (lack of tail) are ready to find a home! Meet Dr. Hannah, one of our shelter veterinarians at Ventura County Animal Services as she tells us about a favorite recent patient, Rumi the 2 year old Dobie/Shepherd mix. Rumi arrived at the shelter missing most of his tail, and with a nasty infection. When his tail didn’t respond to several weeks of treatment by our vet team, the VCAS Foundation and your donations were able to send Rumi out for a specialty surgery at VetSurg! Rumi remained an absolute gentleman throughout it all - even when his tail got infected AGAIN and required an additional procedure, plus crate rest in the vet’s office. Those in vetmed know just how special it is to meet a dog so well behaved and laid back for the vet! Rumi really was the perfect patient. All of that to say, Rumi is healed up beautifully and ready to be adopted! He’s open to meeting other doggies, and no further complications with his tail are anticipated. Big props to all involved in Rumi’s recovery - from Dr. Hannah and the VCAS veterinary team, to VetSurg, to the VCAS Foundation and YOU!
