Story
JAMIE’S JOURNEY – LOOKING FOR A HAPPY ENDING We first introduced Jamie back in February. He had been found as a stray and was at a rural municipal pound. Many people posted on Facebook about how gorgeous he was, and that his family was surely looking for him. Sadly, nothing could have been further from the truth. Jamie was microchipped, but the person who it was registered to said they had sold him and didn’t care about him anymore. Nice. Thanks to the microchip, though, we do know that Jamie is 4 years old. He’s either a Poodle or a mix of. Based on his behaviour, it is very clear that this unfortunate pooch had been used for breeding, and either discarded like trash or somehow escaped. The only life Jamie ever knew his entire life was likely hell. It’s obvious that he never lived in a house or ever felt the touch of a gentle hand. We have had many puppy mill and breeding dogs in the rescue over the years, but none as withdrawn and fearful as sweet Jamie. Initial attempts at having Jamie inside a home did not go well. Frozen in fear, he spent 12 days in a corner or behind the sofa. He flinched when a human approached, and it was impossible to get him to go outside. Jamie didn’t want to eat much despite a multitude of tasty offerings. He would move around the house at night and use pee pads (most of the time). Jamie is being fostered by a very patient and caring volunteer who is primarily involved in cat rescue. He has been staying in the cattery, where our gentle boy has made many feline friends. Jamie has had two visits to our vet, the first time for his exam and vaccinations, and the second to get neutered. He’s good in the car but freezes on a leash and needs to be carried (he weighs 22 kg). Jamie has also been to the groomer a few times and seems to enjoy his spa days. We’re not usually big on medicating dogs, but Jamie needed help. After a couple of months on fluoxetine with marginal results, gabapentin was recently added and we’re seeing some improvement. Jamie has gone on several forays into his foster’s home and is starting to look more comfortable. The time has come to start looking for the perfect adopter, one who can continue Jamie’s journey to get where he deserves to be. His perfect family has patience and experience with dogs who have been mistreated, and lives in a quiet home in a rural or semi-rural environment. We consider Jamie to be a high flight risk, so a securely fenced yard, which he will have to gradually be introduced to and always supervised in, is a must. If you think you can offer our sweet and handsome Jamie a forever home, we’d love to hear from you. Helping him continue his journey to overcome his fears will be a most rewarding experience. Please complete an adoption questionnaire on our website at www.kikodogrescue.ca. We are a small rescue and have been active in the Greater Montreal and Eastern Ontario areas since 2008. We are also open to applicants from elsewhere willing to drive to us.

Story
GERMAN SHEPHERD AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION, FOSTER OR FOSTER-TO-ADOPT Meet Marley, a very dashing 6-year-old German Shepherd. Marley was rescued from a pound in May where he was not doing well. His life before that is unknown, but he must have been loved, as he loves and trusts humans. Marley has demonstrated an exceptional temperament, keen intelligence, and a great desire to learn and please. He knows his basic commands, but ongoing training would be beneficial. Marley is very sociable with cats and female dogs, including Chihuahuas, and adores dog-savvy children. He’s friendly and greets people with enthusiasm. Shortly after arriving at his caregiver’s, Marley was diagnosed with masticatory muscle myositis (MMM), an immune-mediated inflammatory condition that affects the chewing muscles. The good news is that Marley has responded very well to treatment, as evidenced by a weight gain from 67 to 81 pounds, and is no longer showing any symptoms. Marley needs to continue his immunosuppressive medication for about 5-6 more months at a modest cost of only about $25 a month. Once he’s finished his course of treatment, Marley will then be reevaluated and hopefully be ready to be vaccinated and neutered, which is included in his adoption fee. Marley is an energetic and endearing guy and deserves to find a loving family who will appreciate him for all he has to offer. Our cuddly boy who loves belly rubs will make a great pet for a single, couple or family. If you’re interested in fostering and potentially providing Marley with a forever home, please complete the adoption questionnaire on our website at www.kikodogrescue.ca. If you would like to offer to be a temporary foster only, please complete the temporary foster home questionnaire. You can also send us a PM or email us at info@kikodogrescue.ca with any questions you may have. When fostering, food and other expenses are paid for by Kiko. We are active in the Greater Montreal and Eastern Ontario areas.

He’s looking for new happiness in a bigger space and more time spent with family. Niko weighs 66 pounds and was born in March 2021. Much loved and well taken care of, Niko is healthy and does not come with any baggage. He’s used to living with young children and is also well socialized with other dogs, unknown with cats. Niko knows basic commands, is housetrained and can be left at home alone while his people are at work without incident. He is good on leash, needing only the occasional reminder to slow down to his walker’s pace. Niko will make a great pet for a single, couple or family that can offer him an active lifestyle. Story
GERMAN SHEPHERD IN URGENT NEED OF ADOPTER, FOSTER OR FOSTER-TO-ADOPT Finn first came to us 7 years ago as a 10-month-old pup. This stunning German Shepherd now finds himself in need of a new home due to his owner having suffered a serious life-changing accident. Finn’s owner describes him as a super Velcro dog—sweet, loving, devoted, and very respectful of things and property. Weighing in at 130 pounds, Finn has always been very well taken care of. He just had his annual checkup in August and got a clean bill of health. While Finn can be shy when meeting new people, treats go a long way in winning him over. He finds very young children a little scary, but doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. Finn got along very well with the female German Shepherd in the home, cats are unknown. Whether you're heading out for a hike or just relaxing at home, Finn will be right by your side, ready to be your best friend. If you're looking for a loyal companion who will protect your heart (and your backyard), Finn is your guy. Come meet him and see why everyone falls in love at first paw! If you’re interested in fostering and potentially providing Finn with a forever home, please complete the adoption questionnaire on our website at www.kikodogrescue.ca. If you would like to offer to be a temporary foster only, please complete the temporary foster home questionnaire. Story
SAINT BERNARD / BERNESE MIX AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION! Looking for a big, lovable companion who will melt your heart? Caporal is a stunning Saint Bernard / Bernese Mountain Dog mix, and he’s as sweet as he is majestic! With his thick fluffy coat, soulful eyes, and affectionate nature, he’s the perfect blend of both breeds’ best traits. At 4 years of age and 127 pounds, friendly Caporal is a playful pup who loves long walks and backyard time but is happiest when he’s near his people—he’ll lean in for pets, follow you around the house, and always be ready for a cozy snuggle. True to his mountain-dog roots, Caporal thrives in cooler weather and enjoys being outdoors, but he’s equally content relaxing indoors with his family. He can be an only pet but also gets along well with other dogs. Caporal would do best in a home with space to stretch out and a family who appreciates his loyal, gentle nature. Caporal is house-trained, neutered, microchipped, and ready to find his forever home. If you’re looking for a loving, loyal companion who will fill your life with warmth (and maybe a little drool!), Caporal could be your perfect match. If you have room in your home and heart for Caporal, please complete an adoption questionnaire on our website at www.kikodogrescue.ca. Story
Our 50-pound, 4.5-year-old Schnauzer mix River is extremely loving and affectionate with his own people, but it’s a different story with visitors. Negative behaviour was created as a result of having been put in a room when visitors arrived. Because of this, River needs an experienced adopter who is prepared to work with him with a basket muzzle to help manage and overcome this reaction when people visit his home. LIFESTYLE: River needs a calm single or couple with a quiet lifestyle and few visitors. A semi-rural or rural environment would suit him best. River would not be suitable for apartment life, and no dog parks or children please. ACTIVE: River is playful and moderately active. He enjoys walks when there is not a lot going on around him, but responds well to redirection and positive reinforcement. OTHER PETS: River would be fine as an only dog, but a well-behaved female canine role model may be beneficial. Don’t be fooled by River’s cuteness. He needs a dedicated pack leader to show him the way. If that sounds like you, a very loving companion awaits. If you are interested in offering River a forever home, we ask that you please visit us at www.kikodogrescue.ca to fill out an adoption questionnaire. All Kiko dogs have been examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated, dewormed and tested for heartworm (if deemed necessary), microchipped, sterilized, and require an adoption fee of $475 and an adoption contract.
