JAMIE’S JOURNEY – LOOKING FOR A HAPPY ENDING
We first introduced Jamie back in February. He had been found as a stray and was at a rural municipal pound. Many people posted on Facebook about how gorgeous he was, and that his family was surely looking for him. Sadly, nothing could have been further from the truth.
Jamie was microchipped, but the person who it was registered to said they had sold him and didn’t care about him anymore. Nice. Thanks to the microchip, though, we do know that Jamie is 4 years old. He’s either a Poodle or a mix of.
Based on his behaviour, it is very clear that this unfortunate pooch had been used for breeding, and either discarded like trash or somehow escaped. The only life Jamie ever knew his entire life was likely hell. It’s obvious that he never lived in a house or ever felt the touch of a gentle hand. We have had many puppy mill and breeding dogs in the rescue over the years, but none as withdrawn and fearful as sweet Jamie.
Initial attempts at having Jamie inside a home did not go well. Frozen in fear, he spent 12 days in a corner or behind the sofa. He flinched when a human approached, and it was impossible to get him to go outside. Jamie didn’t want to eat much despite a multitude of tasty offerings. He would move around the house at night and use pee pads (most of the time).
Jamie is being fostered by a very patient and caring volunteer who is primarily involved in cat rescue. He has been staying in the cattery, where our gentle boy has made many feline friends. Jamie has had two visits to our vet, the first time for his exam and vaccinations, and the second to get neutered. He’s good in the car but freezes on a leash and needs to be carried (he weighs 22 kg). Jamie has also been to the groomer a few times and seems to enjoy his spa days.
We’re not usually big on medicating dogs, but Jamie needed help. After a couple of months on fluoxetine with marginal results, gabapentin was recently added and we’re seeing some improvement. Jamie has gone on several forays into his foster’s home and is starting to look more comfortable.
The time has come to start looking for the perfect adopter, one who can continue Jamie’s journey to get where he deserves to be. His perfect family has patience and experience with dogs who have been mistreated, and lives in a quiet home in a rural or semi-rural environment. We consider Jamie to be a high flight risk, so a securely fenced yard, which he will have to gradually be introduced to and always supervised in, is a must.
If you think you can offer our sweet and handsome Jamie a forever home, we’d love to hear from you. Helping him continue his journey to overcome his fears will be a most rewarding experience. Please complete an adoption questionnaire on our website at www.kikodogrescue.ca.
We are a small rescue and have been active in the Greater Montreal and Eastern Ontario areas since 2008. We are also open to applicants from elsewhere willing to drive to us.
