Oscar is the kind of dog who will greet you with a wagging tail and stay by your side through thick and thin. Oscar's easygoing nature makes him a great match for many types of homes, and he's sure to bring lots of joy and loyalty wherever he goes. Oscar joined us from Hitchcock Road Animal Services after he was picked up as a stray. Story
Argo is currently in foster care. Here is what his foster family has to say about this handsome guy:Meet Argo, our incredible foster dog from Hitchcock Road Animal Services.Argo is a 3-year-old German Shepherd, and while his coloring may hint at Belgian Malinois, his heart and soul are pure German Shepherd. Loyal, gentle, and deeply loving.Argo is one of those dogs who truly loves being loved. He adores people, leans in for pets, and soaks up every bit of affection he can get. He’s just as wonderful with other dogs and enjoys playful moments with his canine friends. When Argo came to us, he was neglected, malnourished, and frightened of the world around him. He had missed out on so much and didn’t yet know what it meant to feel safe. But with patience, kindness, and a steady routine, everything changed. The scared dog we met no longer exists. In his place is a confident, joyful boy whose personality shines brighter every day. Argo has blossomed into a devoted companion who walks beautifully on a leash, is learning obedience, and is making great progress with crate training. He has a medium energy level and loves his daily walks and playtime. He is potty trained, has good recall when off leash, and most of all, he wants nothing more than to be someone’s loyal best friend.Argo’s journey is a reminder of what love and stability can do. He is ready for a forever home where he can continue to thrive — and give back every ounce of love he’s been waiting to share. To schedule a meet and greet with Argo, please call the HRAS main line at 831-769-8850.

Story
Insights from a shelter dog walk volunteer:Today I met this young German shepherd named Rudy. Today I’m grateful for his unconditional love of humans, his eagerness to connect and have approval, his joy at having a toy to play with, his wondrously huge ears and his even more wondrously deep resilience. He’s thought to be about 8 months old, still a puppy, and it’s clear in his young life he’s had hardships. This youngster is skinny, he has a limp and alarming marks on his muzzle, his coat isn’t in great condition and he smells like he spent too much time without enough clean space and air. And yet he holds no grudges against or apparent fear of people. In fact, when I first caught his gaze as I was walking near his kennel, he looked at me and sat. It was a beautiful, natural, I’m a Very Good Boy sit. And he is.Rudy is very trainable and frankly a joy to be with, observant and curious, soaking up learning and approval and love.Dogs are amazing. I’m grateful Rudy was found and is in our shelter having regular meals, clean water, blankies and toys and people who will take care of him. Imagine the gratitude when he gets adopted! Please share him so he can find his new home soon.Updated Adoption Hourseffective 11/19/25:Tuesday-Saturday1PM-4PM 160 Hitchcock Rd, Salinas, CA Adoption fee:---Included is spay/neuter, microchip and age appropriate core vaccines. Story
Meet Apollo, the handsome frosted face German Shepherd. Apollo came to the Shelter after his previous guardian was unable to continue caring for him due to her medical needs. His previous guardian reports that, despite his large size, Apollo likes to sits on laps. His favorite activities are playing and running. Apollo does walk on leash but pulls fairly strongly. The property Apollo lived at previously had outdoor cats who Apollo coexisted with. Apollo previously spent the majority of his time outdoors. He may do well in a home environment where he has easy access outside to a securely fenced in yard via a doggy door or a similar set up and can come in at night. As long as you have some tennis balls and a good throwing arm, Apollo will be a happy camper. He came to the Shelter with his friend Eddie (A328562) who is also up for adoption. Eddie and Apollo could go to an adoptive home together for someone looking for a duo but is not required to be adopted with Eddie. Although he enjoys the company of that dog, he is a bit selective about other canine friends (outside of his buddy Eddie). He may enjoy being the only dog in his next home and soaking up all of your love. If you are a German Shepherd savvy adopter looking for a dog to be the apple of your eye, come meet Apollo today! Now through February 15th, all adoption fees are reduced to $33 - come to the Shelter today to adopt your very own Valentine! The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
