Meet Mary….aka Mamma Mary, a four year old shepherd or Belgian Malinois available for adoption. Mamma Mary’s body shows what might have been a tough existence prior to coming to us. Her frame is bony under her fur, ribs are somewhat visible, more than they should be, her belly sags from nursing puppies we’ve never met… but we know she gave them everything she had. Needless to say, she deserves far better her next go around. Getting to know her, beyond her visible reminders of her past… she’s kinda a sweet, goofy, playful gal that likes closeness, pets, stuffed toys, being told she’s a good girl and lastly, absolutely loves treat!! Let’s remember that the past does not dictate the future… Mary, just Mary will be a phenomenal addition to a family that loves shepherds/belgian Malinois, can give her space, training, fair expectations, and lots of love and playtime. She’s eager to meet and greet and get a taste of the good life. Can you help her with a share? ??Please spay & neuter your pets??***Adoption fees are half price through December 31, 2025: Dogs $151Cats $98- - - Included is spay/neuter, microchip and age appropriate core vaccines. All adoptions are first come first serve Updated Adoption Hours effective starting 11/19/25:Tues-Sat1pm - 4pm160 Hitchcock RoadSalinas, CA

Story
Argo is currently in foster care. Here is what his foster family has to say about this handsome guy:Meet Argo, our incredible foster dog from Hitchcock Road Animal Services.Argo is a 3-year-old German Shepherd, and while his coloring may hint at Belgian Malinois, his heart and soul are pure German Shepherd. Loyal, gentle, and deeply loving.Argo is one of those dogs who truly loves being loved. He adores people, leans in for pets, and soaks up every bit of affection he can get. He’s just as wonderful with other dogs and enjoys playful moments with his canine friends. When Argo came to us, he was neglected, malnourished, and frightened of the world around him. He had missed out on so much and didn’t yet know what it meant to feel safe. But with patience, kindness, and a steady routine, everything changed. The scared dog we met no longer exists. In his place is a confident, joyful boy whose personality shines brighter every day. Argo has blossomed into a devoted companion who walks beautifully on a leash, is learning obedience, and is making great progress with crate training. He has a medium energy level and loves his daily walks and playtime. He is potty trained, has good recall when off leash, and most of all, he wants nothing more than to be someone’s loyal best friend.Argo’s journey is a reminder of what love and stability can do. He is ready for a forever home where he can continue to thrive — and give back every ounce of love he’s been waiting to share. To schedule a meet and greet with Argo, please call the HRAS main line at 831-769-8850.

Story
Insights from a shelter dog walk volunteer:Today I met this young German shepherd named Rudy. Today I’m grateful for his unconditional love of humans, his eagerness to connect and have approval, his joy at having a toy to play with, his wondrously huge ears and his even more wondrously deep resilience. He’s thought to be about 8 months old, still a puppy, and it’s clear in his young life he’s had hardships. This youngster is skinny, he has a limp and alarming marks on his muzzle, his coat isn’t in great condition and he smells like he spent too much time without enough clean space and air. And yet he holds no grudges against or apparent fear of people. In fact, when I first caught his gaze as I was walking near his kennel, he looked at me and sat. It was a beautiful, natural, I’m a Very Good Boy sit. And he is.Rudy is very trainable and frankly a joy to be with, observant and curious, soaking up learning and approval and love.Dogs are amazing. I’m grateful Rudy was found and is in our shelter having regular meals, clean water, blankies and toys and people who will take care of him. Imagine the gratitude when he gets adopted! Please share him so he can find his new home soon.Updated Adoption Hourseffective 11/19/25:Tuesday-Saturday1PM-4PM 160 Hitchcock Rd, Salinas, CA Adoption fee:---Included is spay/neuter, microchip and age appropriate core vaccines. Meet MAX – A Resilient, Loving Pup Looking for His Perfect Home! Max’s journey started in a heartbreaking way—he and his sister, Nova, were abandoned in a park, left in a box. But despite his rough beginning, Max’s spirit shines brighter than ever! While his sister has found her forever home, this sweet boy is still waiting for his special family. Both Max and his sister has a congenital condition affecting their bone development, likely due to early malnutrition or genetics. But don’t let that fool you—this little guy is full of life! He loves to play, explore, and soak up affection. After a fun romp, he’s all about cozy power naps and cuddles. While he moves around well now, he might need extra support down the line. Max is searching for a family who will embrace him just as he is—with love, patience, and plenty of snuggles. Could that be you? To learn more about Max and start the adoption process, visit www.aarflove.org and submit an application today! "They are a dog first, even if they have a special need. Even with disabilities or problems, they can still live a great, quality life" ~ Carla Boyd
