Story
I adopted Magnum from the Santa Cruz shelter in January 2024 and he has become increasingly aggressive since coming home with me. He is a doll with me but he tries to attack anything else that moves - cats, lizards, squirrels, my chickens, young children, people, and all other dogs. The shelter thinks he is about 3 years old. I don't know anything about him prior to adopting him. I walk him regularly (often very long hikes) and I have been training him since day 1 with the help of 2 different trainers. He also takes doggie prozac (FLUoxetine) daily. He continues to be really aggressive to anyone but me, which has made it very difficult for me to lead a normal life and have family/friends over. He does great in his kennel and seems to be a one person dog. He has a very strong prey drive. I have to put a muzzle on him whenever he has to be in close quarter with other people (e.g. car rides). It breaks my heart but I cannot keep him.

Story
Meet the marvelous Martha! Martha came to the Shelter as an owner surrender after her previous guardian was unable to continue caring for her. Martha has been a gentle giant through the transition from her backyard to the Shelter. Martha previously lived with four small dogs and coexisted nicely. Martha is currently hanging out in a foster home. The foster parents report: “It’s going great – Martha’s been super easy to handle. She lives for pets. She’s met kids and other dogs and has been a total sweetheart with everyone. She seems to be slowly getting livelier.”Martha has been low to medium energy. She enjoys sniffaris (slow walks where she can explore the world) and doesn’t necessarily need to run marathons every day with her adopter. Daily walks will be crucial to helping Martha lose weight as she is a bit of a bigger girl than she should be (100lbs!). A home with other dogs may be a fit provided they meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. We do not have any history of Martha with cats. If you’re looking for a gentle giant, come to the Shelter to set up a meet and greet with Martha today!

Story
Meet Cruise! Cruise is a handsome, social German Shepherd. Curise was described as house trained in his previous home. When strangers would come over to visit, he was calm and would sit next to his new friends. Cruise lived in a home with teenagers ages 15 and 16. He was described as calm around the children in the home. He`s met dogs at the Shelter and has enjoyed romping around the exercise yards with some of them, but like most adult dogs, he may not enjoy the company of every dog that he comes across. We call that `dog selective` and it`s totally normal: just like people, some of us are super-social and love big, random parties, others prefer the company of a smaller group of family and friends! A home with another dog to play with is a possibility and we can arrange a meeting at the Shelter prior to adoption to see how they do as individuals. He has responded well to reinforcement and relationship-centered training. Cruise finds kitties a bit too enticing to chase so a home that is feline free is required. Looking for a well-rounded shepherd boy to complete your home? Cruise over to the shelter!

Story
Meet Terry! She`s looking for a soft place to land in her golden years. Despite being a senior, Terry has lots of pep in her step and will surprise you with her energy level. She enjoys playing fetch and going for walks. Terry can be selective about other dogs so she`ll likely thrive in a home as the only dog or with a well matched similarly sized dog. Terry has been around children in her previous homes and has done well, but she`s not great with cats, livestock or small critters.Through April 30th – all dogs over 40 lbs have a ½ off adoption fee! Big dogs have lots of love to share so consider adding one to your family today!

Story
In the Spring of 2022, Heidi found herself on the intake list at the Stanislaus County Shelter picked up as a stray. Little did she know this was the beginning of an amazing journey to a second chance in life. Heidi was scared, hungry, and confused, but her sweet demeanor shone through and she passed her behavioral evaluation with flying colors. Poor, sweet Heidi was extremely underweight, suffering from GI issues, and had kennel cough. A few months later GSRNC answered her rescue plea and within 2 months of being fostered, this lucky girl had a new home. Her adopters fell for Heidi because she was super affectionate, playful, and non-destructive. They learned she was a little cautious with strangers at first but that didn’t last very long! Her extreme intelligence coupled with a love for treats made training lots of fun for the whole family. All the boxes were checked! As they got to know Heidi, the new adopters discovered that she had a high prey drive and could be dog-reactive. Anything small and furry was fair game (excuse the pun). This was a deal-breaker for her new mom and dad who decided to return her to GSRNC. No problem – resilient and charming Heidi was quickly scooped up by another incredible foster! Now 6 years old and 75 lbs., Heidi has settled in nicely with her new foster family. They love that this beautiful girl wants nothing more than to share love and affection with them. They are thrilled she has exceptional manners and lives to please. Heidi has learned to trust and now greets people of all ages with a gentle, yet enthusiastic reception. When asked what is so appealing about Heidi, her fosters say “she is just so snuggly!” Proud Heidi wants you to see all the boxes she checks now! I love: * Taking walks (she says this is a must) * Going on car rides especially if it includes new adventures * Showing off my good manners * Chasing squirrels and cats, it is just too much fun! I am: * House-broken * Crate-trained * Not a puller and walk nicely on a leash * Still a little reactive to dogs but am easily redirected * Possibly amenable to a sibling but honestly, I would love being an only dog! Heidi is a level 3 dog living in the South Bay who wants nothing more than to become the newest member of your active family. May 4, 2024, 12:58 pm
