Story
In the Spring of 2022, Heidi found herself on the intake list at the Stanislaus County Shelter picked up as a stray. Little did she know this was the beginning of an amazing journey to a second chance in life. Heidi was scared, hungry, and confused, but her sweet demeanor shone through and she passed her behavioral evaluation with flying colors. Poor, sweet Heidi was extremely underweight, suffering from GI issues, and had kennel cough. A few months later GSRNC answered her rescue plea and within 2 months of being fostered, this lucky girl had a new home. Her adopters fell for Heidi because she was super affectionate, playful, and non-destructive. They learned she was a little cautious with strangers at first but that didn’t last very long! Her extreme intelligence coupled with a love for treats made training lots of fun for the whole family. All the boxes were checked! As they got to know Heidi, the new adopters discovered that she had a high prey drive and could be dog-reactive. Anything small and furry was fair game (excuse the pun). This was a deal-breaker for her new mom and dad who decided to return her to GSRNC. No problem – resilient and charming Heidi was quickly scooped up by another incredible foster! Now 6 years old and 75 lbs., Heidi has settled in nicely with her new foster family. They love that this beautiful girl wants nothing more than to share love and affection with them. They are thrilled she has exceptional manners and lives to please. Heidi has learned to trust and now greets people of all ages with a gentle, yet enthusiastic reception. When asked what is so appealing about Heidi, her fosters say “she is just so snuggly!” Proud Heidi wants you to see all the boxes she checks now! I love: * Taking walks (she says this is a must) * Going on car rides especially if it includes new adventures * Showing off my good manners * Chasing squirrels and cats, it is just too much fun! I am: * House-broken * Crate-trained * Not a puller and walk nicely on a leash * Still a little reactive to dogs but am easily redirected * Possibly amenable to a sibling but honestly, I would love being an only dog! Heidi is a level 3 dog living in the South Bay who wants nothing more than to become the newest member of your active family. April 16, 2024, 4:00 pm

Story
Embry is a beautiful 5-year-old female who came from a Modesto shelter. She is a petite German Shepherd, weighing in at about 65 pounds, but in that small frame, she packs a lot of love and happiness. She walks around her foster home wagging her tail as if she knows she is one of the lucky ones to have been rescued. She is excited when her people come home but has learned that jumping is not the right way to greet them. Embry loves to be with her fosters and, if allowed, she will curl up next to them and snooze happily while they read or watch TV. This confident girl is crate trained but can also be left alone in the home without issues! Embry knows her basic commands, such as sit and down, and has even learned how to use the dog door. She alarm barks at new people coming to the home so will need to learn proper slow introductions to strangers (such as meeting in front of the home on neutral ground). Her foster family has discovered that Embry makes a great running buddy and she even joins them for a 4 mile jog. When she is leashed up and taken out for a walk or run, Embry is initially extremely excitable at the beginning of an excursion and may bark at dogs and people but she calms and settles after a few minutes of walking. She has walked through birthday parties in the park (balloons, loud music, children) without expressing any reactivity. Embry is a very intelligent dog who is still learning leash manners and sometimes pulls a bit. With consistent training, Embry will catch on quickly. Embry enjoys car rides but she really loves playing with and in water. Her silly antics will keep you quite entertained. Make sure Embry has plenty of toys, especially fuzzy squeaky ones! While she is always up for a game of fetch, if you say no and let her know you’re done, she will gladly entertain herself. And, Embry does not destroy her precious toys! Just think of all the money you could save! Currently Embry is an only dog, but she did well with another dog during her shelter evaluation, and lived peacefully with another dog in her prior foster home. With proper introductions, she likely would do well with a doggy sibling. There is some prey drive in Embry, but it isn’t excessive, so we are unable to say whether she could learn to live with a feline sibling. Her fosters have no children, therefore, we are unsure how she reacts to them. Mature Embry is at that perfect age, past the puppy antics, still able and willing to learn, and has plenty of energy to keep up with your activities. She has been patiently waiting for her forever family and would like nothing more than to be your loyal companion. This sweetheart is a level 3 dog being fostered in the Sacramento area. Tara is a beautiful, 70 pound, long legged 4 year old kind, sweet and generous dog who is thriving in her foster home. Tara is a kind, sweet and generous dog who is thriving in her foster home. Tara quickly bonds to women but was unsure about men. Never showed any aggression but would bark and hide from them. Through the amazing patience and kindness from her male foster family members, Tara has learned that she can trust men, and is comfortable and playful around them. Watch Tara get the zoomies! Tara is smart and curious and is responding well to training. She is crate trained but sleeps quietly on her doggy bed and waits patiently until her family wakes up. Tara has great house manners. She doesn't chew inappropriately and stays off furniture. In the backyard, she doesn't dig and isn't destructive. Tara is not a demanding dog and happily waits until her foster family is ready to play. Tara loves walking and hiking and never pulls on the leash. She can be fussy when other dogs bark at her but is easily redirected. We think Tara would do best being an only dog. Tara learns quickly and is working hard on being the best canine citizen she can be! Tara is a level 3 dog. April 16, 2024, 4:00 pm

Story
Taz, a handsome 2-year-old male, was found as a stray in Stockton with multiple wounds and an injury from having a collar embedded in his neck. We found him to be a very sweet but timid boy and were delighted to bring him into our program to heal, decompress, to learn the art of becoming a great family dog. Taz has shown his true colors as a smart, playful, super-affectionate, and calm boy who just wants to connect with and please his people. At only 65 lbs., he is kid friendly and has been around children as young as 5 years old. Even though Taz is friendly to strangers (men and women alike) on his walks, he prefers the ladies and would do best with a woman owner upon whom he will shower affection, love, and unlimited snuggles. At home however, Taz is extremely uncomfortable with “big” men. Check out Taz's video on YouTube! Taz is comfortable around all kinds of dogs showing neither aggression nor enthusiasm. He can entertain himself with stuffed toys but he LOVES his ball and will play fetch with you for as long as you want! Very little prey drive is detected but he finds it entertaining to chase shore birds and deer. With a low prey drive, Taz just might be okay with cats! Given his previous neck trauma, Taz now sports a harness and enjoys a long morning walk and then just hanging out with his people and his foster-sister. He walks very lightly on the leash, at your pace with no pulling. Taz is housebroken, crate trained, and happily perfecting his house manners. He now responds well to off, sit, down, place and shake. Additionally, Taz sleeps soundly in his crate at night for 8 hours. With the foster’s consistency and a routine, Taz seems to gain confidence every day. We have no doubt that if his new owner continues offering this boy opportunities to safely explore his immediate world, he will be an amazing companion who is deeply connected and loyal. Watch Taz practice his obedience!  (and check out his soulful eyes!) Taz is a level 3 dog Watch Taz play with his pals!April 16, 2024, 4:00 pm

Story
Cyrus is a handsome 4+-year-old male who GSRNC brought into our program as a puppy in July 2020. He is a very playful, energetic, loveable, and affectionate boy, who immediately was adopted. His owners loved him but found he was a bit too playful with his senior dog pal. We are on a quest to find the perfect home for this boy who the foster describes as “a sweetheart and real lovebug.” Read what Cyrus wants you to know about him: -I am super handsome and just over 4 years old. -I always have a big smile! -I am an 85 lb bundle of energy with soft thick fur who loves to be brushed. -I walk well on a leash and enjoy going on hikes, neighborhood walks and runs. -I love car rides! -I get along well with other dogs but play rough so need a high energy fur sibling with a similar play style. -I haven’t had any experience with cats. -I am more interested in hanging out with my people and relaxing than playing with toys. I probably should have been named "Shadow" -I am housebroken, know my basic commands and I will sleep in a crate at night. But I don’t like being crated during the day. -I show no food aggression and take treats with a soft mouth. -I just got a foster home and am perfecting being the perfect family dog! Watch Cyrus making friends in his obedience class! and then Check out his romps with his buddy! Cyrus has come far with the help of a trainer. Despite being bounced from house to house and spending months in a kennel, Cyrus is ready to trust and be loved. His new family will require continued management so he can stay at the top of his game. Cyrus is a level 3 dog, more on the mellow side, and being fostered in the East Bay. April 16, 2024, 4:00 pm

Meet happy-go-lucky 4 year old Cisco! Here is what we know about him: He likes people; I mean really, really, really likes people! He is incredibly affectionate and super friendly. He loves his rubs and pets, and will lean into you for more! He is good with and quiet around other large dogs and is currently fostered with another shepherd. He is great on a leash and will heel and sit when he stops. He seems to be non-reactive to to most critters, except things that like to hide in the bushes. His foster mom says that her very favorite things about him are that he is sweet, quiet, and has a spectacular coat. And if you want a quiet companion and love to be outside, Cisco is your kind of dog! Cisco is so fortunate that we came to his rescue. Now we need to fulfill our promise and find someone to offer him a great forever home. Cisco is a level 3 dog being fostered in the South Bay.April 16, 2024, 4:00 pm

Story
Meet the marvelous Martha! Martha came to the Shelter as an owner surrender after her previous guardian was unable to continue caring for her. Martha has been a gentle giant through the transition from her backyard to the Shelter. Martha previously lived with four small dogs and coexisted nicely. Martha is currently hanging out in a foster home. The foster parents report: “It’s going great – Martha’s been super easy to handle. She lives for pets. She’s met kids and other dogs and has been a total sweetheart with everyone. She seems to be slowly getting livelier.”Martha has been low to medium energy. She enjoys sniffaris (slow walks where she can explore the world) and doesn’t necessarily need to run marathons every day with her adopter. Daily walks will be crucial to helping Martha lose weight as she is a bit of a bigger girl than she should be (100lbs!). A home with other dogs may be a fit provided they meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. We do not have any history of Martha with cats. If you’re looking for a gentle giant, come to the Shelter to set up a meet and greet with Martha today!

Meet Terry! This older GSD came to the Shelter as an owner surrender after bouncing around between a couple homes. Terry is looking for a soft place to land in her golden years. Despite being a senior, Terry has lots of pep in her step and will surprise you with her energy level. She enjoys playing fetch and going for walks. Terry is dog selective and would thrive in a home as the only dog or with a well matched similarly sized dog. Due to observed prey drive in previous homes, Terry is recommended for a home without cats, small animals or livestock. Terry has been around children in her previous homes and has done well.Through April 30th – all dogs over 40 lbs have a ½ off adoption fee! Big dogs have lots of love to share so consider adding one to your family today!

Story
*ADOPTION FEE SPONSORED by Santa Cruz Realtor Loren Morse*This is Oso. What he's missing in legs he makes up for in heart....and head (it's real big). Some of you might remember reading about Oso in the news about a month ago, shortly after he was shot in the chest by someone entering his guardian's tent near the Pajaro River levee. Our partners over at Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter took Oso in and provided him with emergency surgery after the bullet completely shattered his leg. Unfortunately the leg couldn't be saved -- but fortunately, Oso looks just as handsome as a tri-pawed. And he's now with us to find a loving home! This big (70ish pound) goofy boy holds no grudges and is very friendly, affectionate, and playful with people. He loves belly rubs, baby talk, and toys, toYS, TOYS! The bigger and squeakier the better, and he'll joyfully throw them for himself. This handsome guy is only about a year old and still quite strong and energetic. His stamina might not be what it used to be (with all fours) but his new physique doesn't slow him down all that much. He still very much enjoys walkies, yard zoomies, and being paired with another playful pup for playgroup. There is so more to learn about Oso, including how cute that big head is in real life -- so come on in during Browsing Hours (Wed - Sun from 11 -5pm) to check him out!

Story
Maia is a 7-year old female German Shepherd/Malinois mix who is looking for her forever home. While she is quite comfortable in her foster home, she really wants a family to call her own. Maia had been surrendered by her owner to local animal services after having given birth to six beautiful puppies.  Her puppies have all found their adoptive homes, and it is now Maia’s turn to find a home of her own where she will no longer be used as a breeder dog. Maia was initially extremely shy; however, she has come out of her shell being in foster care, and wants nothing more than to be by your side. She is crate trained and house trained, and has never had any accidents since being placed in foster care. She walks nicely on leash, but does get excited and at times will pull, but minor corrections will bring her back into line. Maia loves to play with her soccer ball, chasing it, and will bring it back and drop it at your feet, so you can throw it again.  She would also make a great running partner.  Maia is a very special pup, with a challenging temperament that only an experienced handler would be able to manage in order to keep her out of trouble. For this reason, we will be looking for applicants who understand firm guidance and consistency to hardwire acceptable behavior, so patience is key. Maia is quite selective with the dogs that she wants to interact with, and the fact that she has a very rough and tumble play style that can get her into mischief, it is best that she be the only dog in the home to ensure success. Maia is going to make a wonderful doggie companion for whoever has the necessary skills and is lucky enough to adopt her. She is very sweet and loving, and since her primary motivator is her people, she will climb up for snuggles with you on the couch if allowed. She sometimes forgets that jumping up on you is unacceptable, but is improving. Because of her prey drive, a home without cats or other small critters is a must. Only experienced adopters who have successfully raised a GSD, Belgian Malinois or other large breed dog  will be considered, and one who can continue obedience training based upon positive reinforcement to ensure Maia remains on the path of a well-behaved canine citizen. ##1095719##

Story
Lyla is a 6 1/2 year old female German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois mix dog. She’s a very sweet girl, who is doing really well in foster care, but is now ready for her forever home.  She is house trained and crate trained. She has not had many life experiences, which makes her a bit shy with new people. Her new person can help her discover our great big world to overcome her shyness! Lyla has rough and tumble fun with her foster brothers and she also loves toys and balls.  She is full of energy, and would make a great running partner. We believe she would also excel at agility, or another doggie sport of her liking. Lyla completed a 4-week basic obedience program and did very well learning commands. Lyla has more of the Malinois traits, is somewhat of a dominant female, and is really smart. An adopter must commit to continuing her training, and offering her firm guidance and leadership, setting boundaries and behavior expectations based upon positive re-enforcement methods. This will keep Lyla physically and mentally challenged, and ensure she remains on the path of a well-behaved canine citizen. An adult-only adopter who understands the Belgian Malinois temperament, and have experience in successfully raising this breed will only be considered. Due to her prey drive, an adoptive home must not have cats or small critters. While she does get along with non-invasive male dogs, we feel she would be best suited as an only dog. Our sweet pup will make a great companion dog for whoever is lucky enough to adopt her. Are you ready to go and meet that big world with this beautiful dog at your side?   ##659803##
