Richmond is the strong and silent type with a marshmallow center. This 3 to 5 year old boy has a gleaming black coat, a crisp white chest, and a sweetness that sneaks up on you. He is not a dog who demands attention. He simply leans in, looks up, and waits for you to realize he was exactly what you were looking for. Watch him outside and you will see him at his happiest. Nose in the grass, ears up, tail going, taking treats from your hand so gently you barely feel it. He is an easygoing companion who wants to be near his people and out in the fresh air, ideally at the same time. Richmond does have one requirement: a home with a physically fenced yard. Give him that safe space to stretch his legs and patrol, and he will give you everything else. We prefer to schedule appointments for meet and greets to make sure someone is available to spend time with you. The shelter is open Monday through Friday, 10am to 3pm, and appointments outside of those hours may be available based on volunteer availability. Meet Opie, an absolute sweetheart. She's lab/heeler/border collie mix (genetically tested), is about 45 lbs and all black. She's great with adults and is generally good with other dogs of the same size or larger. We've recently moved from Washington state to Virginia, and the move has been very difficult on all the dogs, raising tension and made it so that our oldest Pug and Opie are unable to cohabitate. She is truly a sweet girl, she'll sit by your side for hours with just a finger for scratches. She knows the basic commands, is well behaved even with food around, and stays close when off leash. She's great with her food and does not guard. Around young kids, she is nervous but stays still and hasn't presented any aggressive behavior. Just limited exposure here. With smaller dogs, she is typically okay, but if the dog is aggressive or continually pushes she will nip or snap back. Especially if she is seeking the attention of a person.
