Story
Tanner is a senior Retriever mix with a gentle way about him. He moves slowly and deliberately, except for his tail, which seems determined to express every positive emotion he’s ever had. There’s a softness in his face and a warmth in his golden eyes that hint at both what he’s been through and what he’s still hoping for. When Tanner came to us after his person passed away, he was in rough shape. Thin, exhausted, and so anemic from fleas, even a bath would have overwhelmed his system. Those first days, he spent most of his time curled up in his little apartment, watching us with the weary caution of a dog who wasn’t sure what came next.So we kept things simple. Good food. Supplements. Soft beds. A lot of calm, no-pressure kindness. Slowly he realized the world wasn’t trying to knock him down anymore. His coat brightened. His energy returned. And one day he walked outside with surprising confidence, tail spinning like it had been waiting for its moment to shine. These days he enjoys the basics: a quiet walk, a soft place to nap, and anyone willing to offer a slow back scratch. He leans in with his full weight, which is flattering right up until you remember how solid fifty pounds can be. Pull out a cookie and he looks like a child seeing magic for the first time.Tanner isn’t dramatic, and he isn’t trying to reinvent himself. He’s simply a sweet, steady, grateful dog who appreciates the small, good things. If you like peaceful mornings, soft snoring, and a companion whose loyalty arrives without fanfare, you’ll understand him immediately.TANNER IS IN FOSTER -- PLEASE CALL THE SHELTER TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO MEET HIM!Interested? Come for a visit any day of the week - 365 days a year between 9am - 12pm. Hope to see you soon!PLEASE NOTE: Animal Aid Society observes a 40 mile adoption radius to facilitate post adoption support and follow ups.

Story
Santini is currently involved in an undercover, top secret rescue operation. For security reasons, his identity is classified, so we can’t show you his photo online.BLUF: he's a healthy, young, 85-pound Lab mix who came to us from the West Coast after getting out of a bad situation. A network of very good people got him safely from Point A to Point Much Better.Everything was completely legal, legitimate, and aboveboard. Nobody rappelled from a helicopter. There were no forged passports. We’re just being extra careful about protecting Santini’s identity and location, so for now, his handsome face cannot appear on social media.Which is unfortunate, because he's VERY handsome. What we can tell you is that Santini was a beloved family dog, and it shows. He has excellent house manners, loves to play, loves to snuggle, and loves other dogs. He's basically 85 pounds of “What are we doing today, and may I sit directly on you while we discuss it?”And potential adopters don't need to worry - his unusual arrival does NOT come with unusual problems. He’s a wonderful, social, affectionate dog who simply needed to land somewhere safe.So Santini’s adoption campaign is going old-school.You have to come meet the mystery man in person.Stop by Animal Aid and ask to see Santini. We’ll take you behind the curtain, introduce you to our classified canine asset, and let him do the rest.Visiting hours are 9am to noon daily, including weekends & holidays. AAS is located at 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA.Interested? Come for a visit any day of the week - 365 days a year between 9am - 12pm. Hope to see you soon!PLEASE NOTE: Animal Aid Society observes a 40 mile adoption radius to facilitate post adoption support and follow ups.

Story
With every goodbye you learn. Two amazing, loving people had to say goodbye to Tilly (aka Matilda) and bring her back to us. They had taken her home as a foster-to-adopt and gone above and beyond to make it work with their two cats. Sadly, that was not to be.They got Tilly through her first of three heartworm treatments and helped her settle into home life. They learned her likes and dislikes and appreciated Tilly for the amazing girl that she is. They realized she didn't really respond to Matilda, but Tilly made her light up.We now also know that she loves to be sung to and can endlessly look at herself in the mirror. She continues to cross her front paws when laying down, which makes every heart melt. And she came back to us with an army of stuffed toys - all with the squeakers taken out because they scare her - and, most importantly, her very own Squishmallow. When I went to give Tilly her lunch today, she was curled up on her bed in her room, enjoying the A/C and surrounded by her stuffed friends. You almost couldn't see her because she was lying under her Squishmallow, but then her sweet head popped up.Tilly is 8-years-old and heartworm positive but nearing the end of her treatment, which is fully covered by AAS. And, wow, this girl has so much love to give, just not to cats or other dogs.We are beyond sad that Tilly doesn't enjoy cats and could not stay with two people who love her dearly. But, we are so grateful for all the new information we have about this extraordinary girl. Please come meet our Tilly - she is a sight to behold and will fully embrace you with love. Tilly and all of her friends are available to meet every single day form 9am-12pm at 80 Butler Farm Road in Hampton!Interested? Come for a visit any day of the week - 365 days a year between 9am - 12pm. Hope to see you soon!PLEASE NOTE: Animal Aid Society observes a 40 mile adoption radius to facilitate post adoption support and follow ups.

Story
PLEASE COME SEE FLYNN.Flynn's been at the shelter for more than 65 days, and he hasn't had a single visitor. That's heartbreaking because this gentle 3-year-old mix has worked so hard to overcome a terrible start. We recently took Flynn to a shy-dog class hosted by trainer Adam Claar, and we watched something remarkable happen.Flynn was hesitant to enter the training area, but a few treats persuaded him that the doorway wasn't a portal to doom. Once inside, he completely lit up.The dog who initially cowered in the corner began approaching people for ear scratches and belly rubs. Then he started playing with the other dogs -- gleefully! Flynn's usual default had been the "if I can't see you, you can't see me" move toddlers are famous for, but this time, he lept into the spotlight! He even completed a confidence exercise by knocking over a Solo cup to retrieve a cookie. That may not sound like a major achievement, but for Flynn, it was approximately the emotional equivalent of planting a flag on the moon.Flynn came to us from a very bad situation in which his owner faced surrendering him or possible cruelty charges. When he arrived, he was frightened, shut down, and constantly cowering. Now he's playful, affectionate, gentle, and eager to connect. He especially adores other dogs and becomes visibly happier whenever he sees a friendly one.Flynn has already shown us how brave he can be. Now he needs someone to show him that all his hard work was worth it.Please come meet Flynn, and please share his story. After more than 65 days without a visitor, he deserves the chance to light up for a family of his own.Animal Aid Society is located at 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA. Visiting hours are 9am to noon, daily, including weekends & holidays.Interested? Come for a visit any day of the week - 365 days a year between 9am - 12pm. Story
Hi, I'm Nishia handsome black Pit Bull/Lab mix with a heart as big as my 60-pound frame. I'm five years old, full of playful energy, and always ready for the next adventure. Whether it's a hike through the woods, a jog around the neighborhood, or just a good old-fashioned game of fetch, I'm your go-to guy. And when the day winds down? I'm all about those cozy cuddles. I get along well with other dogs and would thrive with a high-energy playmate to keep up with my zest for life. Id also be a great match for an active human who loves being outdoors and can give me the structure and consistency I need to be my best self. I can be a bit rambunctious. I am respectful of cats who put me in my place but give chase if they run. I'm a smart cookie and eager to please. I already know how to sit, stay, and come. I'm potty trained, crate trained, and walk well on a leash, so I'm ready to hit the road with you. I'm also neutered, vaccinated, and heartworm negative healthy and ready for my forever home. Right now, I'm being fostered in Colonial Heights, VA, but I can be transported out of state for the right match. Please note, there is a transport fee. If you're looking for a loyal, fun-loving companion who is equal parts adventure buddy and cuddle bug, I might just be your perfect fit. Fill out an application and let's start our journey together. I can't wait to meet you!
