Story
Meet Delta, a 3-year-old Lab mix with a playful spirit and a big heart. She is deaf but already knows a few hand signals and does great with clear, consistent communication. Because she can`t hear someone approaching, kids can be a bit iffy for her, and dog meet-and-greets are important since compatibility depends on mutual comfort. Delta is leash trained and absolutely loves playing tug. With the right home and patient guidance, she`ll make a loyal and fun-loving companion.

Story
Tanner is a senior Retriever mix with a gentle way about him. He moves slowly and deliberately, except for his tail, which seems determined to express every positive emotion he’s ever had. There’s a softness in his face and a warmth in his golden eyes that hint at both what he’s been through and what he’s still hoping for. When Tanner came to us after his person passed away, he was in rough shape. Thin, exhausted, and so anemic from fleas, even a bath would have overwhelmed his system. Those first days, he spent most of his time curled up in his little apartment, watching us with the weary caution of a dog who wasn’t sure what came next.So we kept things simple. Good food. Supplements. Soft beds. A lot of calm, no-pressure kindness. Slowly he realized the world wasn’t trying to knock him down anymore. His coat brightened. His energy returned. And one day he walked outside with surprising confidence, tail spinning like it had been waiting for its moment to shine. These days he enjoys the basics: a quiet walk, a soft place to nap, and anyone willing to offer a slow back scratch. He leans in with his full weight, which is flattering right up until you remember how solid fifty pounds can be. Pull out a cookie and he looks like a child seeing magic for the first time.Tanner isn’t dramatic, and he isn’t trying to reinvent himself. He’s simply a sweet, steady, grateful dog who appreciates the small, good things. If you like peaceful mornings, soft snoring, and a companion whose loyalty arrives without fanfare, you’ll understand him immediately. You can meet Tanner at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road in Hampton, VA. Visiting hours are 9am to noon every day, including weekends and holidays. He’ll be the one with the golden eyes and the tail that has good opinions about everything.Interested? Come for a visit any day of the week - 365 days a year between 9am - 12pm. Hope to see you soon!PLEASE NOTE: Animal Aid Society observes a 40 mile adoption radius to facilitate post adoption support and follow ups.

Story
Shelter magic is real - and Lily is living proof. When Lily arrived, she was overwhelmed, insecure, and (no judgment here) very chonky. She wasn’t quite sure how to be a dog yet. Fast forward, and the glow-up is undeniable. Lily is now slender, athletic, and stepping into the world with confidence and - yes - joy. Watching her discover herself has been like seeing someone realize, mid-stride, that they actually know how to run. She’s been spending more and more time in our food prep and office area, where she excels at being what we call "helpful." "Helpful" means no counter surfing, no shelf demolition - just calm company, joyful greetings, and occasional dramatic flops on the floor to demand belly rubs. With Lily, there’s no chaos. Just vibes.Lily is a healthy, nearly two-year-old Collie/Golden mix. True to her collie roots, she has opinions and a strong interest in managing the household. She can be a little neurotic in the most earnest way, and she’ll thrive with people who appreciate her inner project manager and know how to gently redirect her toward play and enrichment. The good news - Animal Aid Society has an excellent trainer ready to provide in-home support, fully covered by us, if you want a few pointers to help Lily shine.Lily has done the work. Now she’s ready for a home that lets her become her best self.Animal Aid Society is located at 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA. Visiting hours are 9am to noon, including weekends and holidays. Come meet Lily - she’s ready to greet you, flop dramatically, and maybe manage your household just a little.Interested? Come for a visit any day of the week - 365 days a year between 9am - 12pm. Hope to see you soon!PLEASE NOTE: Animal Aid Society observes a 40 mile adoption radius to facilitate post adoption support and follow ups.

Story
And then there was one. Just Leia.Leia came to us from a home, along with Luke and Tanner. They were ravaged by fleas in a way we had not seen before. All of them had flea anemia and Luke almost needed a transfusion. They each had their own health issues as well.Tragically, we had to say goodbye to Luke because of a mass on his heart. Then Leia and Tanner were welcomed into a wonderful home, but Leia, who was now feeling a bit better, had trouble getting along with Tanner. When none of them felt well, they just coexisted and tried to survive. But now that they feel a bit better, more emotions are coming out.So Leia is back with us - 111 days since she first came to us. She has a few health issues - a heart rate that jumps up and down and an issue with her back. She is on meds for her back and is feeling better, which we are thankful for.But her fluctuating heart rate causes her to sleep, a lot. Sleep can be hard to come by at the shelter but she finds it.When she is up and about, she is delightful. Some days you can hardly believe she is 10 years old. She adores people and is so content when someone just sits next to her as she sleeps. We are seeing that she may definitely prefer to be the only dog in the house. We are looking for a permanent medical foster for Leia. All medical expenses would be covered for this amazing girl. We just want a very soft spot for her to land so she can have some amazing months or years - she so deserves that.If you have room in your heart for the sweetest girl, with the biggest heart, who has had some rough years in her life, come meet our special Leia! We think she keeps going because she knows her person is out there somewhere.Interested? Come for a visit any day of the week - 365 days a year between 9am - 12pm. Hope to see you soon!PLEASE NOTE: Animal Aid Society observes a 40 mile adoption radius to facilitate post adoption support and follow ups.
