Story
Honey is fostered in the Barrie area. Please note Honey will require multiple visits to her foster home by approved adopters to help ensure her transition to her new home is successful. Honey is a gentle, affectionate, 5 year old, little companion looking for a home where she can be close to her people. She may take time to warm up, but once she loves you, she becomes a true Velcro dog. She will follow you everywhere, happily snoozing beside you while you work, and always ready for cuddles, belly rubs, and couch time. She has never shown any aggression, and quickly bonds with her person. She would do best with someone who works from home or is home for most of the day given she is a velcro dog. Honey came to us from a puppy mill and, like many mill dogs, she can become anxious in various new and different scenarios. She struggled with nighttime pacing and panting when she first arrived and is most comfortable sleeping in bed with her people. Honey's transition into her foster home was aided by prescription anti-anxiety medication and she will likely require daily medication again when she moves to her new home. Loud noises like thunderstorms and fireworks are also very scary for her and she is prescribed the same anti-anxiety medication to cope with those events. She is not a fan of crates, dislikes car rides, and can be nervous around cars in general. Her adopter should be prepared to continue building her confidence and making sure she feel safe through positive reinforcement and enrichment, to help her feel secure. Honey is mostly house trained and does best on a consistent bathroom schedule, as she doesn't reliably signal when she needs to go outside. Occasional accidents can happen if her routine changes. She MUST be in a home with a fully fenced yard. She would do best in a home where someone is home often to continue to work on her house training. Pee pads are available. For those interested in adopting one of our puppy mill release dogs, please be aware that these dogs often require extra patience, structure, and ongoing support. Their temperaments and behaviours can vary widely, and for the best outcome, adoptive homes MUST have access to a fully fenced yard and understand that rehabilitation is a gradual process. Many of these dogs have not yet experienced living in a home, regular interaction with people, leash walking, housetraining, or even having a name. All of these new people, environments, and activities can be scary for them and many are flight risks while they adjust. Leash walks may not even be a safe option for them initially which is why having access to their own fenced yard is essential. They need a patient adopter who can meet them at their comfort level and gently help them learn how to be a companion animal.
